One dead play button can turn a wedding ceremony into a nightmare, and we both know that “it worked at soundcheck” is not a safety plan. We start with a few Beyond The DJ Booth updates, then get into DJ life the way it really is: imperfect, funny, stressful, and fixable if your systems are solid.
We bring back a classic segment and test our brains with a drum-only game that proves how hard song recognition can be when you strip everything down to rhythm. From there we jump into pop culture with Coachella talk, including reactions to Justin Bieber’s performance style, Diplo’s perspective, and how festival moments can revive catalog tracks and reshape what clients ask for at weddings and private events.
Then we go practical. We rant about the rising trend of putting DJs behind bar-style facades that create extra setup time, invite drinks near gear, and make the booth look worse, not better. Joe shares a real ceremony fail where a custom MP3 would not play at the exact moment the bride needed it, what likely caused it, and the recovery move that turned the mistake into an emotional highlight later in the night. We also talk corporate DJ realities, TV DJ booths, and why interactive content beats endless logo loops, including a shout for Instant Spotlight and its AI photo filtering.
We wrap with Gear Corner, including why we love the Allen and Heath CQ12T digital mixer, and a key planning question: how to handle must-play song lists when the picks are not danceable. Subscribe, share this with a working DJ friend, and leave a review with your best backup-plan tip.

Patreon Shoutouts And Video Update
SPEAKER_04What's up? Welcome back to Beyond the DJ Booth. I'm Joe Bunn, one of your co-hosts. That's my guy, Brian B, and uh we're back, we're back, we're back, and batch recording today, cranking out episodes. I'm coming off a cold, so if my voice sounds a little bit weird, it's not AI, it's really me. We want to start today by shouting out our Patreon backroom members. Do we even need to say that anymore? Yeah, I don't think we have to say backroom. Okay. Well I mean that's what it's we're gonna shout out our Patreon members. There's only one tier now, in case you uh missed the memo. Yeah. DJ411. Shout out DJ411. Tom at My Events. Is it My Event DJs?
SPEAKER_03Did you spell it wrong or is it? No, that's how it's me. Is that French? Uh is that Spanish. Oh, Crisson.
SPEAKER_04Me Events DJs. And uh Aaron Matthews, we appreciate y'all. And as always, if you want the bonus content, you want the goods, you want the wink wink bonus stuff, you gotta be a Patreon member. It's patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Again, Patreon.com slash Beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Let's get into it.
SPEAKER_03Well, we have another announcement too. Oh, what is it? Did you know that we have now converted or in the midst of converting, but going forward from now on, video podcast will be on Spotify. We are manually uploading these videos every week. Not me or you, but our uh VA. So that those that were missing out on the video that maybe weren't watching it on YouTube, you can watch it on Spotify now.
SPEAKER_04That's pretty cool. Are you going back and do it in the past?
SPEAKER_05Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03We're working our way through it. Wow. So 90 plus episodes or something. Well, it does take time. Yeah. Because those are big files, obviously. But uh this helps us on the editing side because pretty soon we won't need to edit an audio only version and a video only version. Unfortunately, Apple Music's video is still not great interface, so we're still doing audio for that. But hopefully it'll all because all become video, which is helpful because there's some things that don't translate to audio that we have to do some special editing for. Right, right. So uh anyway, if you are on Spotify, just know that you have the option. If you don't want to watch video, you just hit the audio button and it changes it to audio. That's pretty cool. So there you go. Learn something every day, folks. What's it the next one? Ooh, we're bringing back a recurring segment. Oh shit. Can you I thought we banned it? Oh no, no, no. This was back, baby. Can you find the one? Don't find the one. So have you been playing with STEMs a lot lately?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I mean, I'm I'm I'm not a STEM master. Some guy, uh, I forgot to tell you this. Uh did you see I posted a couple of live sets recently on YouTube? I did see that. One was from a 40th birthday party, and one was from a wedding. Okay. Man, and some and most people they got great views, and most people were like, Oh, this is great, you know, it inspires me. You know, now I can see how other people play. And it wasn't, neither of them are perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Live is always Man, this dude came for me, and he's like, Oh, song two, you fucked up and lost the dance floor, blah, blah, blah. Like, and then I banned him from the channel, and like somebody else commented was like, Yo, what's up? Why'd you ban that guy from the channel? I'm like, dude, it's all about how you approach me. Yeah, you think you're gonna come on my channel where I've spent all this time and all this money to edit these videos and talk shit to me and not get banned? It was crazy. If he had just been like, oh man, rough transition on that, you know. It was it was all about his delivery. Right. Yeah. Dude, and then I went and looked at his channel. Failing ass musician had four music videos with 80 plays on each of them.
unknownYeah.
STEMs Talk And A Segment Returns
SPEAKER_04And I said, You need to worry about your own shit before you like hyperanalyze my damn set, son. Anyway, um, but Stephanie. But he was going at me like, oh, there's no no excuse in this day and age of of playing uh a set that's not completely in key and stimming out every song.
SPEAKER_03And I'm like, fuck you, man.
SPEAKER_04Like anyway, it's terrible.
SPEAKER_03All right, well, we're gonna bring this segment back. Okay.
SPEAKER_04So you want to put us on the side. I would say I'm I'm I'm yes, I use it, especially for mixed now songs where I feel like the vocals getting ready to cut, you know, come back in and I don't want it. Yeah, or if I want to cut out apart, people are singing along instead of like doing the kill fader, it's almost easier to just hit the vocal button.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm not dropping a lot of instruments and melodies though. I I'm I would like like a master class from somebody. Yeah. If anybody knows of one, like a Phil Harris class or something.
SPEAKER_03Like well, I am playing with these more and more because I'm getting a lot of sax players and other instrumentation. So I'm actually not using it through Serrato. I'm maybe there is a way to do it where you can pull out more than just the instrument, right? Oh, what do you mean? Uh in other words, not just uh instrumental or vocal, but actual instruments. So pulling out like the sax line, pulling out the drawing on a pre-edit? Yeah, pre-edit. So I'm trying to work on that. So uh this can you find the one is going to be 10 tracks very quickly, 10 tracks. Can you name the song based on just the drum beat? Okay. Alright? Okay. So I'm I'm starting easy, obviously. I'm not gonna like kill you with this. But uh we'll play just the drum only sample. What's happening into your headphones here? Anyway. You can always use in ears for this. There we go. Alright, so we're gonna play you drum beat number one for about five seconds. Yeah. See if you can guess it, and then uh we'll we'll go from there. Can you name this? This should be it could be shake it off or it could be or Mickey. Okay. Both wrong. Okay. Let's hit let's hit the let's hit the sample. One, two, three, three.
SPEAKER_04Oh wow. Speaking of that, it's gonna be easy. Yeah. I thought it was gonna be like Billy Jean or something. Speaking of the Michael Jackson movies, actually really good.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I have to watch that.
SPEAKER_04It actually got shit on like by Rotten Tomatoes. Saquon has seen it with all his friends. I've seen it, Mike Walter's seen it. It's really good.
Can You Name The Drums
SPEAKER_03Okay, it's on the list. Okay. Oh for one. Yep.
SPEAKER_04Good start. Are these the goddamn like original version? Yeah. Why is this so hard?
SPEAKER_03Any idea? Dude, Tara got this right off the bag. I went through all these with her, by the way. No scrubs? I don't know, man. All right, let's play the sample.
SPEAKER_04Wow! Okay.
SPEAKER_05One for two.
SPEAKER_02Well done.
SPEAKER_04Okay, all right. You don't suck it.
SPEAKER_03It's harder than than you think it's gonna be. I don't know why. All right, she got this within two beats, so let's see if you can get this one. Number three.
SPEAKER_04Oh, look up all the dirty dirty pop instinct. All right, let's see if we got it right. Let's see here. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. I I'm starting to understand. Okay, two for three. All right. Let's go with number four.
SPEAKER_04Oh, uh. Trigger we're going down? No. Call out boy?
SPEAKER_03No. Oh. You want to go in here one more time? Yeah. One more time.
SPEAKER_04It's not higher creed, is it? No. Okay. I don't know it. Go for it. Harder to breathe. I know, Maroon. Five.
SPEAKER_03Nah, this was this was possibly their greatest album. Two for four. Okay. We're gonna go hip hop here. All right? Let's see if we can get the hip hop.
SPEAKER_04Oh.
SPEAKER_01Iconic.
SPEAKER_04Iconic. Yeah, it's it's definitely timbering. One more time?
SPEAKER_03Anything? It's not Bill's Destiny's Child, is it? No. You want to hear one more time? One more time. Is it Leah? I don't know. Would you have gotten a second one? Nah, I wouldn't have got it.
SPEAKER_01Okay. But I would have guessed 10 minutes as well.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so let's hit it.
SPEAKER_04Man, I wouldn't have got that. That doesn't sound like Dra B.
SPEAKER_03Alright. Without that, a little bit more pop. Okay. Here we go.
SPEAKER_04Dude, this is actually hard. One more time. It's not buttons, pussycat dolls, is it? No. Let's go for it.
SPEAKER_05Don't know what for.
SPEAKER_04Holy moly. Two for six, man. So far I am good at this game. Let's never do this again. Number seven. I mean, this is a pretty I mean, I know those drums. I know the era. I mean, it's it's what era would it be? Let's it feels like boy band or like brick. We're in the boy bands. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So I'll I'll give lead you with that. Okay. All right, one more time. Not one of the biggest songs of their catalog, but it's backstreet, right? It is backstreet.
SPEAKER_04I know the drums, but all right, go for it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Larger than life. Alright. I'll give you a pass on that one. Three for seven.
SPEAKER_03I gotta prove your average here. Okay. All right. Now this one, here we go. The three, these are the we're in the back end here, so this is gonna be a little bit tougher.
SPEAKER_04One more time.
SPEAKER_03A pretty popular song, but not the main hit. Yeah, we've got this one. I'm sorry. I don't have it. Go for it, Saquon.
SPEAKER_01Right up before.
SPEAKER_03Black Eyed Put Meet Me Halfway. Great song. Alright, we're gonna go back to some hip hop. Number nine. Oh, uh is it frequently?
SPEAKER_04No. Uh and it's not buttons, pussycat. Oh no, I keep going back to that. West Coast. One more time. Let me hear. I don't know. It's not it's not Shake That Monkey. No.
SPEAKER_01Uh you you got the hook, bro. Oh. But that's not the name of the okay. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03You and Dad? No, E40? Yeah, I love that song. Three for nine. Terrible. Okay, last one. Terrible. She's she's she just performed a stagecoach.
SPEAKER_04Ella Langley? No. Uh older track. Oh, okay. One more time.
SPEAKER_03No. Not at all, huh? No. Ooh.
SPEAKER_04This is tough, dude. I don't know why.
SPEAKER_03Alright, you can play the sample.
SPEAKER_05On a Monday, I am.
SPEAKER_04No way she was at stagecoach. She was at stagecoach.
SPEAKER_03She played right after our boy Scooter. Did Scooter kill? He did. Yeah. So you were three for ten, and I'm giving you maybe that three. Yeah. Ooh, I thought you'd be better at this. I did too. Man, it's tougher, right? Oh, it is.
SPEAKER_01You gotta give him four. Because he didn't, he named the hook of the last one.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay. We'll give you the U and that.
SPEAKER_04It's a stretch on to for I appreciate you. Say one, looking out for me.
SPEAKER_03Well, we haven't batched in a while, so there's a lot of stuff that's been happening in the world and music. Uh, I thought we would chat about our pop culture moment and cover it there. So let's hit the clip.
SPEAKER_05Brian B. Jobon dropping heat just for fun. Pop talk spinning like a record spine.
unknownWoo!
SPEAKER_01Pop culture clash where the stories collide. Two DJs bringing the flavor we're wild.
SPEAKER_03Alright, so uh Coachella just happened a couple weeks ago. It did. Um, anything that just hit you in general, like uh as far as things that you saw online that you were stoked about, things that you um anything that just kind of hit you?
SPEAKER_04Um I didn't, you know, I didn't get to watch anything, but I did watch both of the Bieber performances on Sunday.
SPEAKER_03The because he did two nights. He did, yeah. And what was your favorite part? Anything that kind of stood out? I dude, I I mean the whole idea was awesome, right?
SPEAKER_04I thought it was awesome. And it caught and it was so the internet was completely divided. This is lazy, this is stupid, this is bullshit. And I was like, I think it's genius, and I think this set is great. Right. And I've told you since we've been recording this, I love those new albums. Yeah. And he played a ton of it. I mean, they both started the same way. Like that the I like those records.
SPEAKER_03You know, you I mean the most uh paid out artist that they've ever had. Yeah, 10 milli. And then he made another 10 from what I heard on merch.
SPEAKER_04He outsold everybody in merch. He got paid more than anybody. He's got more shit. 20 million for a weekend.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Not a bad paycheck. I'll take it.
Coachella Buzz And Bieber Debate
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Um, I liked it, man. I I enjoyed it. I watched it. I the second weekend he was even better. You could tell he was more engaged with the he was all out in the crowd. Like he was just you could tell he's more comfortable. Like he just told him on a tour, man. It's like, if you want to see me, come here. Yeah. And that's and I don't I don't hate him for that, man. I I've always liked Bieber. I think he's been through some shit. And he's he's a man now. He's grown up. Right. I don't know, man. I thought I I didn't see any really of the DJs or any of the other bands that I love. I just I just didn't really see much else.
SPEAKER_03Are you familiar with Huguell? Yeah. He's a DJ writer or producer. Both. Yeah. He I thought crushed. Really? And he brought out uh he was he brought out Snoop. Oh, I did see that. So I did see that. That was the way that they snuck it in there. I don't know if we're gonna need the headphones or not for this, but you know what I'll play that vid? Getting my head turned up. Can you put that in the headphones or no? Okay.
SPEAKER_02I also love the brain.
SPEAKER_03But how cool was it now? We have this down. What a great call by him. I wonder how much we get paid to even bring that dude in, or if he just called him favors or I don't know. You never know with these kinds of things. Yeah. My favorite one of this duo though was the next clip, so let's hit this one.
SPEAKER_02I want to get this remake.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's up there.
SPEAKER_04I mean, he's a little bit older than me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I just thought it was dope to see that. Yeah, it is. And then uh with the Bieber thing, you know, I was curious, like with uh his tracks that you're playing. Yeah, you know, have you seen that some spikes with requests with that stuff? Um no, I haven't. Well, if you go to the next slide here, it's awesome.
SPEAKER_00I was surprised he even went to the classics because the way he played it was amazing. Nobody could go to Coachella and just sit on his laptop and play off these two because that's like that's legendary.
SPEAKER_05Except him, he's the only one.
SPEAKER_00And he gave him, he gave you a little bit. He was like, I got so many hits to you. You got this. It's like it's like being at a party with him.
SPEAKER_03Which I thought was pretty cool how Diplo was talking about it. That he was he he loved it. In fact, I even screen grabbed what the Spotify Global Charts is number one song right now. Beauty and a B. Which I have a hot take that I think actually that power is doing better for me. Yeah, you told me that. It's crushing for me. But this one still does well, don't get me wrong. But to see that that one came out in 2014 and here we are in 2026, I really do feel like these festivals are moving the needle more than these award shows, you know.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I I would agree with that as as well, man. I I wish they kept the streams up longer, though. I think it's only like like if you didn't see Bieber on Sunday, yeah, you didn't see it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03That's interesting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. I don't think you can go and watch it. It's just like you in back, in fact, when you when I got up Sunday, I had to rewind to the night before. Oh. And then you could see the whole main in the Sarah Sarah tent, main stage, all six tenths or whatever. You could go back and rewind the day before and watch it. Got it. And it was like the audio's crispy, the video's crazy. Like I you couldn't pay me to be a coachella. Fuck that place. Have you ever been there though?
SPEAKER_03I can just say it without saying that, though. I just sound like a festival.
SPEAKER_04I'm not a festival guy. Yeah. I'm not a festival guy. So I can say it constantly.
SPEAKER_03Let's go there first. I don't need to.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, early, early Lollapalooza. Okay. Early Lollapalooza. Okay. And then what what turns you off about a festival is? Too many people. Too many people. I can't get close enough to the band. Oh. Even VIP, you're not getting close. I saw people that paid$15,000,$20,000, nowhere near the band. Can't get near the band, no good for me. Got it.
SPEAKER_03Can't do it. Well, for our Patreon members, what I thought we would do is put in some of our favorite Bieber tracks in a little pack. Okay. I love that. So that'll be uh some bonus content for this episode. Wow. I love it. Off the top of your head, any Bieber tracks that uh or edits that you're playing that seem to do really well? Um I have a baby edit.
SPEAKER_04I think it might be Fuses. I have a Despacito edit that's a little bit faster. I think Diggs did. I have those are my two that are coming to the top of my head. And you play those pretty regularly? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um not Desposito as much, but the other one, baby, I do. I played Despacito this weekend. It went all it. I played Desposito this weekend, too, but I was playing that little Latin sash sound.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay, okay. It worked great for the Caucasian crowd. The gringos, the gringos. They had that in there. Yeah, they they need that. Well let's go to our rant segment, the off the record. Uh oh.
SPEAKER_01Uh off the record, let me talk my sugar honey ice tea. They throw a shade while I'm sipping on this ice tea. Don't care if you hate or like me. You know why? Cause that's just how life is record off the record, off the record, off the record. Say it with your chest. Got a microphone, check it. I'm gon' say what I want to say. It's my time to write and ready. Get out the way.
SPEAKER_03So I'm gonna go first on this. Oh, okay. Dude, I've been playing a lot of gigs recently, and it feels like I'm getting there. I'm bringing the booth, yeah, already ready, everything in there, and I get there, and they have like a bar top right set up for me. See that in the pictures, what is that? What are we doing? And why don't you tell me ahead of time? Right. Because now I gotta pull everything out. Right.
SPEAKER_04I have separate controllers that aren't in that booth. Yeah, right. I've dragged this shit here, it's all pre-wired up.
DJ Booth Facades And Bad Albums
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Now I'm dead. I gotta spend all this time pulling it back out. Yeah. And then at the end of the night, I gotta put it all back in. Right. Or wait till the next day, you know, to do it. Or it could get torn up if you don't. And I just wonder like it's not just the planners necessarily. Sometimes these are florists who are doing decor. Uh that's how it is in Florida. Not everybody does that. But it's like the booth stuff is fine. Like, I think it looks a lot better than some shitty looking bar thing. And the other problem with it is you become the bar because people are putting all their drinks on it.
SPEAKER_04Well, and your hands are hidden. Nobody can see what you're doing. Well, then short, so it looks like basically my head is just.
SPEAKER_03Like floating around that well, this has the topper to it. So you put your controller on top of it, if that makes sense. Sorta. So imagine it coming out. Like that's where people would hand the drinks on. Right. It's not just like a bar front that has nothing. Oh, the one here is like a bar front. Okay. So this has a topper that comes up not all the way. You can still get close enough, but it's still for people to put their drinks on. So a genius move, which I'll be a pro tip here for anybody watching, is uh the florist came and she brought a lot of her uh floral things from the ceremony over to kind of put in front of it to design it. I said, She goes, Do you mind if I put anything on top? Like anything? I'm like, actually, that's a genius idea. Put as much as you want because that'll keep people's drinks from being on here. Right, right. So I get it. Maybe they want it to look a little bit more symmetric with all the other floral stuff, but I'm finding this happening more and more to me when I arrive. After I've already asked, is there a bar set up or anything? Do I need to bring furniture or do you have something there? And I don't know until I get there. So I I've got to figure that out because it is so frustrating to get there and have to pull everything out of your body.
SPEAKER_04Bro, you know, I never leave this market. There is actually somebody that has built one that goes around the command center now. A what? A like a bar? Like a three-sided facade. Wow. Like a wooden. But why? Don't know. I'm like, what how is this not acceptable? A white, perfect DJ booth. And then somebody literally took the measurements from it and built like a thing. And I we'll get there in there, but like, there's your booth. And I'm like, what do you mean?
SPEAKER_03They're they're like the command center just goes right behind that. And that's my rant on this is that I feel like they're not as good looking anyway. It looks like a bar, like it does not make sense. It looks like a homemade wooden piece of shit, right? Which is what it is. In fact, one of them actually had to take out the spray paint and they have used it for like before. I'm like, this doesn't even need to be a thing.
SPEAKER_04Garbage, dude. Get this out of here. Get this out of here. So need a bungear command.
SPEAKER_03Planners, designers, let us just bring our stuff. We know what we're doing here. We're not gonna be able to gear.com. Here you go. What about you? You got any rants going on?
SPEAKER_04I dude, I I don't I don't want to. In fact, I you know, I told I always tell you, I wake up to the radio, right? Like OG radio, and and whatever. I if you took a gun out right now and held it up to my face and go tell me the name of the second single off the Brunos Moore's record, it's Spanish. It sounds like something that plays in a Mexican restaurant when you're ordering Speedy Gonzalez number three. Okay. It's fucking terrible. This was the album that you cried over, right? Nope. Nope, stop. Hold on a second. Don't be nasty. Number one, I told you I cried when I just might came out because I thought it was so good. Okay. Now, now I I personally still love the song. I would consider the album and the single a big fat F. Dookie. Stink Dookie. Hold on, hold on. Help me out.
SPEAKER_05We got a stinker.
SPEAKER_04I don't know why, but nobody's asking for it. I thought that I just might was gonna be like the next Uptown Funk. I'm not I'm not even exaggerating.
SPEAKER_01We passed that, bro.
SPEAKER_04We passed Uptown Funk.
SPEAKER_01That's why shit new.
SPEAKER_03Like I told you all along, I felt like that song was like skate to me. It had had a nice feel to it. Yeah. It just never was gonna be like Uptown Funk changed the game from the standpoint of like sure brought funk back to it. Sure. You know, and this just didn't have that to me.
SPEAKER_04Um will you reserve it for doors open?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. I actually had a mom of the bride. That's how bad this song is. A mom of the bride said, Can you play I Just Might? Because she wanted to sound cool. To be fair, that's the same age I am. So there we go. Not enough of y'all. Right. So I I played it once. I've had it requested one time. Yeah. That's it. So you think this whole album's done? I do. Yeah. Not any. I haven't listened to it at all. It's trash. Nothing else on there. He just didn't. What happened here? He just phoned it in? Or was he trying to make a more listening album, which is fine, but not for the dance for the dance uh gig side. I'm not sure what he was trying to do, man.
SPEAKER_04I really don't know. It's not good. I don't and I don't know that anybody is going to argue with me, but but maybe there's people.
SPEAKER_03I mean, definitely hit one, right?
SPEAKER_04I just might for a little while. Yeah, for a minute, but a little bump, and then it just they've already moved on to this other single, and and I just again I don't look at the charts. Is it are any of these on the charts? I say I just might chance just go to the Spotify and just see. Go to the hot 100, U.S. Hot 100, and just see. It I don't remember what the second single is even called, but I'm curious if it if I just might is even on it.
SPEAKER_03I think it's it's in the top 50 for sure. You think so? Oh yeah. Okay. I just might. I it it was like 18 last time we looked. So I don't know if this is why is somebody asking for it? I don't know. I just don't think it has that kind of thing. I don't say it's not danceable.
SPEAKER_04You said top 100 uh US is what it's called, isn't that what it's called?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. On Spotify?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, you can use that one as a reference.
SPEAKER_00I'm on a top 50 and um nowhere?
SPEAKER_03Either one of them. I'm shocked. I because it then it fell off quick because that that one was number 18 last time we recorded. I just might. Some guy named Noah Khan is all over this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04All right. All right. Anyway, that's my rant. Uh Bruno, you you you did me nasty. Yeah, he just took a dookie in the bed. Yeah, he did. Shit right in it. He shit right in it.
SPEAKER_03Well, let's move on. All right. All right. So, dude, I had a my first mistake as a DJ in years, like major mistake. So, and I'm curious how you do this anyways. I had a bride whose sister of the bride, this is the day before the wedding, okay. Which is always the worst too when they make changes the day before the wedding.
SPEAKER_04No.
SPEAKER_03She's like, my sister was a sister-in-law was supposed to is supposed to come and play the guitar at my wedding, but she can't make it down here now. I don't know the reason. Who knows? I'm gonna send you an MP3 of her recording it. Okay. So she sends it to me. How do you typically uh put these things on? Do you put them you use your computer, right? You put it on Cerrado and just load it in that way.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_04Well, first I would have downloaded it. Um when I got the email, I would have taken it and and put it in a dropbox folder called for upcoming shows. So if I had a custom father-daughter dance, it would be there. And it would be labeled April 25th, father-daughter dance.
SPEAKER_03Literally it's like super hyper specific. And you don't have this locally, in other words, you are keeping it on direct dance.
Ceremony Audio Fail And Recovery
SPEAKER_04No, no, and then and then on the final prep when I'm making their special songs crate, their open dance crate, their ceremony crate, I'm gonna take it from that and then I'm gonna drag it into Serato. Right, but it's still playing an offline mode on Dropbox, technically. Well, technically, my Dropbox stays offline. Okay. I mean, I'm sorry, stays on on the once you once you go to Dropbox and say make this available offline, right, you'll see the green kind of arrows pop up. It's off, it's on your hard drive.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04So that's what I did. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Before, how I was doing it before I was using the Dropbox method, is I would bring it into Apple Music or iTunes, what it was before. Okay. That has become a horrible process. Right. It just doesn't like it doesn't make any sense. It's a terrible system. Yeah, it is. So I've been using Dropbox. Never had a problem. Okay. Take it to the event, play it during uh before the prelude. I'm playing it just to test it. Everything's golden. Get to the ceremony. This is her walk down the aisle song.
unknownOh no.
SPEAKER_03Hip play. Nothing. God damn it. So I've got my uh my my I had it on my phone, but I did not have the adapter on me. Oh my god. So I'm like, oh my god. So I'm like playing, playing, playing, nothing. Panic button setting in. The only thing.
SPEAKER_04Now hold on. Stop the story. Have you already played like parents coming down the house?
SPEAKER_03She's waiting to walk down the aisle.
SPEAKER_04I hate this story, dude. I hate it already. Go on, go on. Keep going.
SPEAKER_03I thankfully made uh executive decision. Just fire off something. Well, I had the song she was doing was a cover of a song. Okay. I put the original, I can't even remember what it was now, but I put the original in there as a backup, just in case, on my Spotify. In the playlist. In the playlist. If I just goes to all goes to hell, I got that. Yeah. I play it.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_03She walks down the aisle. I'm watching her the whole time. She's not giving me any looks, thankfully. You know, she didn't side eye you and then we get through it. And I'm just dumbfounded. I'm like, I don't know how this did. I played it before the prelude. Yeah. No problems. Yeah. So I don't know what the issue was, right? So then I uh finished the ceremony. The husband of so her brother, whose wife recorded this, is there. He goes, Can I talk to you for a moment? I don't know this is the brother, by the way. I just don't think it's some random guess. He goes, you know, my wife went to great lengths to record this song. And she doesn't have this. And now we don't have the moment. And I'm feeling horrible, obviously. I go, you know what? I don't know what happened. I said, I have had it on offline mode. I played it before the prelude. Everything worked. I don't know what happened. I'm gonna look into it, but I said, you know what? I'm gonna make it up to you somehow. I don't know how. I'm gonna make it a moment, but I'm gonna play it again at the reception at some point. Because then I can put it on my local computer. Now, to be fair, I don't usually bring my computer, I uh use an iPad for the ceremony. So holy shit. As I'm going to the reception, I am Googling what could possibly have caused this. Because I see the check mark. The check marks there. Like, I don't understand how this didn't get played. How it couldn't have played. And from what they said, is uh there's a couple of scenarios. Either it didn't fully download, even though it shows a green check mark. Oh that can happen. I didn't know this. Me neither. Second thing could be if they recorded it live as an MP3, it could be a variable bitrate issue that's not syncing and it needs to like reconnect to a signal. That was my other thing, was I was in a place that the signal was not great. Yeah. So it could have been that. Yeah. So I don't know what the issue was because I get to the gig to the reception site, I play it first thing just to see if it will work. And it does. No problem. My God, dude. So maddening. The problem was this guy was an a-hole. And he was basically telling everybody at the reception, oh no, no, this DJ didn't play the song. I'm like spreading it. Jackass. Right. Like, let me make it right. Right. I told you I would. Yeah. You know, it doesn't do it at all. So, anyways, just created more issues than it needed to be, right? How when was this? This is a couple weeks ago. Okay. So I uh during the during the serum, uh sorry, the we do the welcome, we do the first dances, all that stuff. We right before dinner, someone gives a blessing. Hold on. Can I? I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_04I I need a clarity on something. In between the the during the cocktail hour or anything, did you walk up to the to the girl and go, I'm so sorry. The bride?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. No, she's not there yet. She's taking pictures. Okay. Go on. Sorry. So she doesn't know what I'm gonna do. Yeah, right, right. She doesn't even know anything is happening. I don't know how detrimental this is at this point. But I'm still just in damage control mode. Damage control mode. Yeah, DC. So during the ceremony, uh, so we finished the blessing before we go into the meal. I said, Hey, before we go into the meal, uh, I want to share a moment that I think will mean a lot to our bride and groom. I can't remember their names, that's why I'm saying bride and groom. I obviously said their names. Sure. I said, um, you know, the sister, uh, I forget her name. I actually knew her name at the time. Julie couldn't be here tonight. And so she recorded a special sh song that she wanted to share with everybody here. So I want to play that right now, and I want to ask that you just honor it before we go up and go to the buffet. Uh, that we just listen to this song. This is for so and so. Let's enjoy it together. And as soon as I play it, everyone, like the bride starts crying, like in a good way, I think. So I think I saved it because I didn't just play it during dinner randomly. Like I literally called it out. Right. I'm not calling out my mistake. Obviously.
SPEAKER_04I was gonna say, Did you eat it?
SPEAKER_03No, no. I just was like, I just want to make this because I if I do that, then everybody knows that it was a screw up. Yeah. I'm like, how can I say this in a way that still honors the moment, gets me through it? And at the end of the night, I knew my dancing would save the night, but like I still felt terrible about the situation. How else can I call this to a moment? I thought, in between the blessing or a welcome if they didn't have a blessing and dinner, I need to make this a moment now. And so if you ever run into this, this is what happened with me to get me through it. I got tipped on the event from the bride. I don't know if it was because I saved it or if it was just because the reception went so great. Because we didn't have any problems once we got into dancing. Right. But that's the first time that's happened. So I go back to Drew and I said, dude, have you ever had this happen? He goes, No, but he said, You know what I do? He says, I don't even mess with dress rock box on these kinds of situations. He uses the Apple music method. And so I'm gonna have to start doing that. That's what I do.
SPEAKER_04And you can take the gaps out if you use the DJ A Y app. Because I'm basically using it like a turntable. Terrible. Uh yeah, that's a terrible story. Sorry, but I figure this might be a learning thing from anybody else out there.
SPEAKER_03And look, nobody's infallible. I have never had that happen. I've always used the Dropbox method.
SPEAKER_04People tell us people tell us they like this podcast because we keep it real. And there are we we don't have every show perfect. Not every show. Excuse me, not every show is a banger. It's not even a good thing. I almost threw up on the mic just thinking about your damn disaster. Oh man.
SPEAKER_03DJ the Candyland uh candy factory.
SPEAKER_04That uh shout out shout out more Moranaga, Japanese company here in Mebvin, North Carolina, about an hour from the office. They make high chews there. You ever had high chews? Yeah. Greatest candy there is. I don't know if I go that far. It makes Starbucks, I mean, it makes starburst look like goddamn turd. Hot turd. What? I hate I to comparatively, I think high chews make starbook look like turds. What's your what what if you have to get a starburst? What's your color? Oh, the pink. The pink, right? The pink and the orange. Nah, these make those look fucking amateur. Bro, telling you, Saquon, tell him. Yeah, high choose a high chews for the water. Isn't it like more like Taffy style?
SPEAKER_03No, I don't know. I mean, they have a little different texture, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but it's it is kind of more like a taffy, but it's which I don't like taffy.
SPEAKER_03I don't like that. It gets stuck to my teeth. I don't like that. But these don't these not. These are like sticky.
SPEAKER_04No, I got a whole bucket at the house. All right. I came off the wagon for one day and it actually hurt my stomach. And I yeah, and then I just quit. Wow.
SPEAKER_03So what made this? Did you play a lot of like Candylands type? I did not, man.
Corporate Background Sets And Candy
SPEAKER_04I we I phoned it in, if I'm being 1,000% on it. I mean, it was it's not, you know, 80% Japanese people. Like literally came in from Japan the day before. Yeah. I happened to pioneer on the club. And it was um it was a um Were they celebrating a product line? Yeah, they were. No, I did the groundbreaking a year and a half ago, and this was the um ribbon cutting. Oh governor, I introduced the governor of the state of North Carolina, just like mayor of Mevin.
SPEAKER_03And did people dance or are you just playing background music?
SPEAKER_04Absolutely not. Background music. And then for how long? Uh two hours. Wow. But then we had to pack up and go and do the nighttime reception at a hotel down the road. Got it.
SPEAKER_03So this was a daytime thing.
SPEAKER_04This was a daytime, and then the thing at the night was at evening, and that was three hours. So what are you playing for this? I phoned it in. They they wanted it very American, like so brown-eyed girl and Sam Cook. It was it was basically my cot wedding cocktail set. But I was like, we were we were kept talking about you. We were like, like I knew I was phoning in, and even the the planner knew I was phoning it in, but it didn't matter. I was there as the MC. Right. Because there were people that gave speeches, I had to introduce them with Japanese names. Right. And just background music, you know, it was a networking thing. Yeah. And I was like, I'm wondering if Brian B would be up here like working his ass off.
SPEAKER_03I would have put a little bit of time into maybe the programming, but no, I wouldn't have. I mean, I don't know. I think sometimes you can overthink it. Yeah. And if you're mixing everything, it looks like you're trying too hard. Like you gotta let that moment breathe.
SPEAKER_04I had worked for the company, like I said, for the groundbreaking. So I knew I'd I knew what I was walking in. Right. It wasn't that kind of DJ thing. Right, totally. Background music, MC thing. Totally agree.
SPEAKER_03Both of them. What was the dynamics of the crowd? Would you say? I mean, you said a heavy.
SPEAKER_04It was all employees.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04Um, but were there many Americans? Yeah, uh 25%, 30%.
SPEAKER_03Interesting.
SPEAKER_04Maybe 50%. The people that work in Mebban mostly are Americans. Will you ever do their holiday party? I mean, has that ever come up? No, but it I mean, it's it is a huge I mean, they spent$136 million on the addition to the factory. Right. So your rate was no problem. I felt like I undercharged. Yeah. But I took my weight and candy on the way out.
SPEAKER_02You can't even eat candy anymore.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Saquon's bag was so heavy. I looked at him, he he said he so they had like a candy store set up. Right. So you just kind of took your bag and started grabbing stuff for free.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And he said this, and we were, we of course waited till the last people had left. We were the last people to walk through. And he said, people just were taking buckets and dumping them in his bag. Yeah. And he goes, bro, feel the weight of my bag. And it literally like was it almost hit the ground. It was like tip. And I go, I look at him and I said, Damn, son, this ain't Halloween. He said, Bro, the dude dumped a bucket in my bag.
SPEAKER_01A bucket. Dude, my little sister killed him.
SPEAKER_03My little woman, she calls it a hall. All gone. Oh, you ate them all. No, my little sister didn't gone, bro. And he calls it a hall. A hall. Yeah. Look at my hall.
SPEAKER_04Look at my hall. I looked at Saquon. I said, bro, it ain't Halloween. Oh my gosh. Anyway. Good now. Easy gig, man. Great clients. I mean, great uh planning. Uh they have me at Elon in another two weeks for the end of the employee year in a stadium. Again, it's a background voiceover thing. They do holiday parties with me. They've got me at another thing this year. I mean, like, they're just a great client. Right. Not so much Morinaga. Right. It's it's RSVP, is the people that hire me. I love it. Yeah. Let's move on. Anyway. Right. Um, have you are you a DJ booth? I'm sorry, TV DJ booth guy. We were speaking about the DJ booths earlier. Like, is anybody putting you behind those? I know you don't own one because it's too behind a what? Sorry, say it one more time. The the big ones with the TV in the front. The TV.
SPEAKER_03Oh, the TV booths. No, I haven't used it. You know, like we see Bob Hickman and Logan.
SPEAKER_04I'm not Toad makes.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. I'm not putting video content on us.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. Are you? Um no, but I I have definitely had one in the past. I've had two of them, one from Toad and one from uh Top Light. And I used it some. Again, it was a little bit difficult for me to transport with all the other stuff I had.
SPEAKER_03Right.
TV DJ Booths On Big Stages
SPEAKER_04Because they don't get super small. You know, they're they're basically made to stay together and roll into the back of the van or your trailer or whatever. But I have definitely been put behind one on a rental gig a few times. And who's renting this? Um the client? The client from the they're just like hey client. It's it's I it's normally corporate. Normally I'm on a stage. It's just like an extra thing because you know, a DJ on a stage is kind of weird. Yeah, I feel like you need dancers. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, if it's big, like a convention center thing, right? You know, these cap trust events I do or whatever. It's so what do you do when you get one in front of you? Well, you know, you always got the logo, and then you you know, I've had these ambient videos on there before, but lately, man, I've been and and I've been using it for different things, and I've used it in the past on and off. Uh-huh. Uh this recent one, I don't even remember what the gig was, and I'm saying recent, as in the first quarter of the year. I use that instant spotlight from S Start. So you know CP, you've met him, he came to He was at the collective for last year, right?
SPEAKER_03Uh he was. Is this like the whole picture thing? Exactly.
SPEAKER_04So, you know, for me, it's like, yeah, you can put pictures of the couple up there and do your own slideshow. Yeah, you can do the, you know, the weird ambient videos, yeah, you can do the logo of the company or whatever. But like at a certain point, you're just on this endless loop of shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And if you're on a stage, especially on a stage, versus being right on the dance floor where it kind of gets covered up by people, people are looking at that screen for something.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_04Right. So it's like, and video DJing's kind of out, nobody's really doing that anymore. So, man, uh the instant spotlight. So S Start's got a bunch of different um products under this S Start brand.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04The Instant Spotlight one is the whole thing with like put the QR codes out on the table, everything you take tonight, just send it here.
SPEAKER_03And then are you how do you make sure there's not like a that's the beauty of it, dude?
SPEAKER_04They've got the freaking AI filters. Yeah. Like, I was like, man, I'm not gonna sit here and just comb through these pictures and make sure somebody's not sending them a dick pic from the bathroom or something. Like or Saquon, I make him do it. Like, even worse. Yeah, dude, it's all filtered out. You can increase the intensity of how you how much you want it filtered out.
SPEAKER_03That's cool.
SPEAKER_04It it there was I didn't have to sit there and push them through, like they just came through. Yeah, and I had no there was no part of me that was worried about yeah, is this gonna be like bad content coming through?
SPEAKER_03I need to give it a try.
SPEAKER_04She didn't curse words or anything like that. It's just scrubbing it. Yeah. And so like I I just highly recommend S Start. There's other things that that I'm gonna use, this other thing called Rafflees at a uh wedding show that we have coming up to collect names. I'll talk about that after that's done. But man, I I'm telling you, instant spotlight. There are other Other I get it, other people in that field, other um uh competitors to this product. I don't know the pricing exactly right offhand between you know the competitors and estart.
Instant Spotlight With AI Photo Filters
SPEAKER_03Yeah. But I I on CP's just a good dude. He supports the industry. It's kind of like what you've talked about, like shows right.
SPEAKER_04Exactly. Support him, support SART. Go check it out, estart.com. Um, and I think that if even if this isn't something that's interesting to people, I think they will find the stuff that is.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Love it. What else? Oh, I gotta talk to you about the gear corner. I already got one of these.
SPEAKER_04The gear's here. The gear.
SPEAKER_05Is here is here, is here, is here, is here, is here, is here.
SPEAKER_03So you turned me on to this. I was gonna get the the QUC makers. And you said no, get this Alan and Heath. So I got it, man. I got the the 12 channel. Yep. I cannot speak highly more highly of it. Me neither. It is an incredible piece of gear. It really is. It's built like a tank, number one. And then I got this SKB case. I mean, all in, I got the 12-channel mixer, it's a thousand bucks. With the case. With the case. My only worry, and I haven't really tested this yet, I'm nervous about it being a digital mixer outdoors in the humidity. I am very worried about it as well. So I would assume the way it's built, I feel like it's got a better chance of not getting too hot or whatever the case may be. I guess we'll find out because I've only used it indoors. But let me tell you, the ease of use with this piece is incredible.
Allen And Heath CQ12T Review
SPEAKER_04Dude, I know. I bought I bought it at the same time you did. I got it in that ceremony rig right there that you can see sitting over there. But I'm telling you, I was out no no shelter two weeks ago in a ceremony, and I have a uh screw on umbrella that I rigged up on top of it. Yeah. And was basically just kind of like raying. Yeah, it was hot. Right. And it was sunny.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And I was worried. I used it for a corporate event. Yeah, I used it for live musicians. Yeah, you can save EQ on there. Yeah, you can record to it. Yeah. If you haven't checked this out, you should definitely check it. I'm not paid by them. No, me neither.
SPEAKER_04I paid for mine. Exactly. CQ12T is the model number. So it's a good one. Alan and Heath CQ12T. If you're looking for an external mixer, I would not go analog. I would I would get this and I would not. I love the QSC touch mix. I think it's great, but it's a 10-year-old piece. And I spoke to people directly at QSC, and they're not making a replacement for it. This is your new mixer. Thank you. You're welcome. Let's hit the question and wrap it. Yeah. Question of the day.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_03This comes from our friend Eric Hovey from Patreon. Hove. How do you handle couples must-play song requests when half the songs, say 20, are not very danceable or even popular? We're going to go back to the last episode.
SPEAKER_04I guess that was a bonus episode.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04What is it called?
Handling Must-Play Songs That Flop
SPEAKER_03The event day service plan. Yeah. Well, I would even hit that. I wouldn't even put that in here, probably necessarily. This is in the conversation. Yeah. Final final planning call. So whatever you call yours. Yeah. Like final planning call. Yeah. It's fine. And advanced call. That's right. I just tell them, say, hey, this these must-play songs, this is where your experience pays off and where the value of your rate comes into play. Is that you can call this out and say, listen, I'm happy to mix these songs in there, but you have this on your must-play. I'm concerned because I have, in my years of DJing, haven't found these songs to be the ones that people respond to. So just so we can set expectations, let me know what your thoughts are here. Is there a reason? Do you know something that I don't know about your crowd? Because there have been certain songs that I thought would no way work. Uh, and then they did. You know, so it has happened that the couple has more insight than I do. Yeah. But I at least want to say, hey, if these aren't working more than half, do I have the permission from you not to play anymore on this list or to, you know, go make a left turn to try to figure out what's going to work with this crowd. Right. And hopefully they are okay with it. Otherwise, you just gotta suck it up and do it. You know, if it's on a must playlist. Hopefully you're vetting them before they ever get to this point.
SPEAKER_04Eric, I yeah. I mean, I'm having that final planning call. I know some people do it a month out. I'm doing it like a week to 10 days in advance of the show. Like I'm not doing it way out. Have you had this happen? Yeah, of course. And I've seen the list, and it's one of the last things that I go over. Um we go over the timeline, go over the names. And and I'll go, hold on a second, let me pull up your list. Because by then they've sent me an email. I've got the Spotify list. And I'll literally, while I'm on the call, I'll be like, this looks good, it's pretty diverse. And if I saw that where 20 songs are like Noah Con or whatever, like I would go, listen, guys, uh, these bands and artists that you love and have on here are not danceable. Let's please work these into the cocktail hour or dinner. Like, I'm telling you from experience, I just don't think they're gonna work. Now, listen, if they're adamant and you're already booked and you're doing the show and they're like, you don't know our crowd, this is the kind of stuff we love, then I'm gonna do it. And if it and if it fails that night, they have the ability to come up to me and pull the ripcord. Right. And I've had people do that. Yeah. Again, back when everything was on paper, I had somebody come up one night and go, Hey, can I see that playlist I sent you? And I handed him the clipboard, and he took it off the clipboard and he tore it up and he goes, Now you do what you do. Because it was it was tanking. Yeah, I mean, it was so diverse and and shitty that it just the nothing was happening. Right. And he literally tore it up and laid it back up on the DJ booth or the table at that time, and he goes, Now you do what you would have done. And I go, Okay. And salvage the whole bar. Yeah, yeah. I mean, experience wins, man. Always. Yeah. And heading this shit off early. Don't don't do it at the event. Do not do the do not prep the sweating, Eric, on Friday, and and you know, and then find out.
SPEAKER_03Right. Or worse, at the event.
SPEAKER_04Jesus.
SPEAKER_03Like then you're really screwed. Right. Because you've already you don't want to go up to them or them being disappointed. That's hey, your playlist sucks. Yeah. Yeah. You got to do it. Enjoy your dinner.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Enjoy the salad.
SPEAKER_04That's the filet. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_04Um, well, good.
SPEAKER_03Let's let's uh thank our sponsor and and head it off.
SPEAKER_04Right on. Thank you, DJ Event Planner. Uh, if you're looking for a CRM to help run your business, I would check out DJEventplanner.com. Brian and I both use it, endorse it, love it. And um, you should check it out, dj eventplanner.com. Thanks, y'all. See you on the next one. See ya.
