We just hit 100 episodes, and we’re not pretending it happened by accident. We talk about what two straight years of weekly drops teaches you about consistency, momentum, and why the audience often finds value in moments we barely remember recording. Then we turn the milestone into something you can actually use: a giveaway for the Melanair SD2, a full rack-mounted in-ear monitor system that can seriously upgrade how you hear yourself and perform at weddings, corporate events, and private parties.

From there, we get into the ecosystem around the show: the Patreon Back Room community, what we’re putting behind the paywall and what’s happening with DJ Collective in Raleigh this year. We also announce a new general session speaker and talk about why we’re excited for an AI session that focuses on real workflows with tools like Claude, not the same recycled “ChatGPT for DJs” surface-level stuff.

And because we’re DJs, we argue about music. We run through song of the summer contenders and land on a pick that may or may not surprise you, plus the real-world question behind it: does a track count if you need an edit to make it playable at a gig?

We close with a listener question that hits a nerve: what do you do when well-known, higher-priced DJs in your market are honestly not good anymore? We unpack the ethics, the business angle, and a practical move that helps without starting drama: invite someone to shadow you, then go shadow them too.

Subscribe, share this with a DJ friend, and leave a review so more booth heads can find the show.

SPEAKER_03

What's up, everybody? Welcome to a big day beyond the DJ booth. If you're watching the video, we hit the 100th episode, baby. 100, baby. Never look so good. Never look so good. You're not watching the video. We got some nice hats. We got hats. I don't need to buy anything for my 100th birthday. I got some of the stuff already ready. We got balloon. We got balance. We could use this twice. We could use this for your 100th and then my hundredth. We can keep it that long. Balance. We got balloons. We got bro. You blowing these up today? I mean, you came in clutch with the the Timmy Tooltime uh little. Oh, you guys were impressed with that McGyver over here, just like most people don't even know who that is.

SPEAKER_01

But I did blow up this one by by mouth. Oh, you did, dude. And then I felt like I was gonna pass out if I had to do these. So I went to the toolbox, found that little duster, and uh reverse engineered it. Yeah. Bro, 100, man.

SPEAKER_03

Seriously. 100 episodes is nothing to shake a second.

SPEAKER_01

When does this come out? September something? No, August. This is in the August, August 19th. You know how I always know? Like I'll look back on um, you know how you look back on your orders from Amazon where we ordered like the the mixture we used to do with some of the mics and stuff. It was September 2024. Two years we've been doing this. Two years.

SPEAKER_03

Every week.

SPEAKER_01

Haven't missed one.

SPEAKER_03

I don't think we have missed one. You were about to pull the plug on this. This this this batch.

SPEAKER_01

It's like, bro, we can't. We got

Celebrating The 100th Episode

SPEAKER_01

to get the Hondo. Well, listen, I from what I know, I don't listen to podcasts. But I feel like everyone takes a break. Everybody takes a break.

SPEAKER_03

But like they finish off, they finish a season, though. They don't do like mid-season, yo, see, and we'll catch back up in a couple months. Oh they finish off the season. Oh. Yeah, yeah. Ain't no breaks.

SPEAKER_04

No breaks, bro. Once you win, you win.

SPEAKER_03

But guess what? We got a little giveaway with this hundredth episode. Okay. So we got some rules, of course. We're gonna make you earn it because we're giving away something special tonight. It's hot as a mug in here, man.

SPEAKER_01

You got on a hoodie, bro. I know, I know, I know. What happens, people, is we start batch recording at 8 a.m. It's cool as well. Now it's 11 something. Yeah, it's gonna be 99 degrees today in North Carolina. The air conditioner in this building is old and loud as shit. So we have to kill that for the three plus hours of it.

SPEAKER_03

Just now it's already hit me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah. So I passed out.

SPEAKER_03

I passed out. A little moist in here. Um, so if you want to get into this this this giveaway, it's literally we're giving away today. You're listening to this, you can get in on it today. By end of day today, there's a couple things you gotta do. Number one, you gotta follow us on the IG. Hold on.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, today is August 19th. Yeah, that's what you're saying. Yeah. All right, I want because people are gonna listen to this in the future for hundreds of years to come. Think about that. Yeah, how important this podcast is. We're 100, we're gonna re-release this. Yeah, exactly. All right, now go forward. So August 19th, today this has to happen. Number one, go ahead. You have to follow us on the IG beyond the DJ booth. Yes, correct. Number two, you go ahead. Subscribe to my YouTube channel, YouTube.com. We gotta get you above the 21k.

unknown

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

Fuck that channel. YouTube.com

The Giveaway Rules And Prize

SPEAKER_01

slash DJ Joe Bun, right? Go to that right now. That's where we post and host these videos every single Wednesday. Right. Number three. Number three, share a screenshot. Yeah. Tag us. That's how we know. Go look at the other two things. I think actually from Spotify where you're listening or Apple Podcast, you can hit the share button, boom, send it to your story. Critical to tag us, though. Story or yeah, critical to tag us, story or your feed. Yeah. If you feel passionate.

SPEAKER_03

Now, if you want the double entry. The two, the two, the two piece. Yep. Go on. Leave us a review.

SPEAKER_01

Leave us a review.

SPEAKER_03

That gets you entered in twice.

SPEAKER_01

Any platform.

SPEAKER_03

Any platform. I don't care. I need to.

SPEAKER_01

Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, wherever. Leave us a review. Those are the things. What are we giving away? We'll put a picture here for people that are watching on YouTube. It is called the Melanair S Dwo. Now, what this is, is a full rack mounted in-ear monitor system with the pack that you are on your belt and the rack mounted transmitter that goes to the pack, which you put on your belt, and then put your favorite in-air monitors in your ears. This system is ridiculous. It is on the YouTube channel, speaking of. Saquon and I did a demo of this thing. We walked around this whole building wearing that pack and never no drops. Wow. No drops. So technically, you could also reverse engineer it and use it as a wireless speaker run as well if you didn't want to use it for an in-air monitor. Love it. I think it's probably two or three hundred bucks. It's the Melanair SD2. That's where we're giving away.

SPEAKER_03

We're going to talk more about the hundred episodes in a few minutes, but just want to let you know that if you want to get into that giveaway, do it today. Stop it right now. Share. Hit pause. Share. We'll see you back.

SPEAKER_01

Hey DJs, are you still showing up to gigs with a flimsy facade or worse, a banquet table? It's time for an upgrade. Bungear DJ booths are built for serious, mobile DJs who care about presentation. Lightweight, durable, and designed for speed. Our aluminum booths look pro and set up in minutes. If you want compliments and referrals before you even drop your first track, head over to bungeear.com and level up your setup today.

SPEAKER_03

All right, let's hit the other things in the Patreon, which is Patreon where all of our VIPs go. Yep. We just recently, well, at the time of recording, hit a hundred people in the Patreon. Yeah, yeah. Now we probably have a thousand. Probably. Probably. Just grew massively in a couple days. Um, but we use the Patreon to give more stuff, give more, more goodness.

SPEAKER_01

Uh guys, I mean, I don't want to say it's even to support the show, but it's just to support your journey. Journey. And there is no way you're not going to get value out of this. I think it's 20 bucks a month or something like that. Yeah. Uh it's patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Shout out Mark Beecher from Brownsburg, Indiana. Have you been there? I just was waiting. I'm like, you ever been? No, never been to Brownsburg, Indiana.

SPEAKER_03

I don't even know where it is. We said Indiana, Indiana's got some love. We got them on Indianapolis a couple episodes ago.

SPEAKER_01

We're huge in Indiana. Yeah. Is

DJ Booth Upgrade Sponsor Spot

SPEAKER_01

Indiana is Indianapolis in Indiana in Indiana? Yes. Okay. Shout out to Indiana. I don't know. Ohio.

SPEAKER_03

Well, beyond the goodness, we also have a contest. Is this still going? This is still going because it's the 19th. We shot out our order. Okay. Oh, right. Okay. Yeah, yeah. So what is this?

SPEAKER_01

What this is, is the DJ Collective. It is a conference that Brian and myself started

Patreon Back Room And DJ Collective

SPEAKER_01

with Jason Janai in 2017. We have been super proud of this. We've done Atlanta, Nashville, Arizona twice, uh, Tampa. We started in Austin, Texas in a room with about 10 other DJs. Nashville. And Nashville, yeah. And this year and last year are in Raleigh, North Carolina, where Brian and I both live. It's going to be at the Maxwell. It's a gorgeous venue here. It's fall in the South is incredible. It's all day November 16th and November 17th. Most people are going to come in on the 15th and leave on the 18th, but all day 16th and 17th content, nightlife both nights, nightlife every night. Quite frankly, we're going to be doing stuff. DJs coming in, guest speakers, sponsors, everything you would expect. This is just different. It's not a conference so much as it is an experience. This event has definitely changed people's lives. The connections that have been made have gotten people shows that they never would have gotten otherwise. They've learned stuff from people that you know they never would have seen otherwise. We had Jesse Isler one year, which is an insane get by Brian. If you don't know who that is, he owns the Atlanta Hawks, and his wife is Sarah Blakely that owns Spanks or sold it for $3 billion, I think. Yeah, she did well. They do real well for themselves. Anyway, um, so again, the DJ CollectiveOfficial.com. All Patreon members are going to get hundreds of dollars off. That ends of August, right? So please get your ticket. Uh, we are trying to make final plans. We capp this at 100. We are already uh over 65% sold. So we've probably sold 65 or 70 tickets out of a hundred.

SPEAKER_03

And here's what I'm gonna do. Yeah. I'm gonna add one thing to that. Anyone that comes and uses that code, I'm gonna bring Beyond the DJ booth merch. Merch. To give to those folks. And I might even say, like, we could maybe do like a little breakfast maybe with them or a little something like that. Just hanging out with the pod. Yeah. We don't haven't even announced the schedule really of what's how it's all gonna lay out, but we're even doing a live recording, little little drop notice there. So it'll be great. You want to be there. Yeah, I'll learn something every day. Yeah, I guess. But today we have a speaker announcement. Yes, sir. I know if you've been to any show recently of ours, you probably have seen this person there. You love him, we love him. Dominic Perone.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, I I don't know anybody more fired up about AI and Clawed and just the way the world is moving at hyperspeed than him. Totally agree. I mean, I dude, I'll be I'm 7:30 a.m. might be taking first dump of the day. This dude's blowing me up, screaming about it. You do a post-shower. It just depends. I can't do it. I gotta wait. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we talked about this before, but I'm just doing a callback.

SPEAKER_01

It just whenever it strikes me, I can't wait for the shower.

SPEAKER_03

But I mean, you're you're on the throne, Dominic's blowing you up.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, uh dude. Literally blowing you up. Let me tell you what I built with Claude today. I mean, it's just like 738. I mean, I'm like, come on, man. Like, I just need to like get a coffee and just ease into the day, and he's screaming already about AI. Totally. So he he's hosted masterclasses on this thing, a challenge on it recently. I'm sure he's gonna talk about it at the uh uh hacker hotel that will have already happened, I think, when this comes out. But like, this dude is going to drop absolute gold if you are um whether you're novice or on the cutting edge of AI, I promise you you're gonna learn something that you did not know from him. He is he is one of my favorite speakers. Um, he's

Dominic Perone Joins For AI

SPEAKER_01

the only speaker that we've got that can say he spoke at Russell Brunson's conference, and I was there to see it, and there were heavy hitters. That was the pinnacle of speaking engagements, and he landed it and crushed it.

SPEAKER_03

So and I will say this he's talking about AI, so you're I kind of gave it away. But I hate going to these industry shows lately. I feel like every AI is just about chat GPT. Yeah, he is not gonna talk about that. He is going way above on that, and I think it is quad specific, but uh it's gonna be a workflow thing that you can apply immediately. So go check it out with that. So I thought we'd talk about the hundred episodes. Okay. I did some stats and looked to see what our top five most listened to episodes are. Interesting. I don't know if you can see any correlation here. I have no idea. I just want to get your opinions on these. If you remember anything from these shows, you probably don't, but I'm just gonna throw it out there from the title. So, season one, episode two, From Porn Names to Power Strips. You got it, it's gotta be the title, right? DJs love this.

SPEAKER_01

It's a great title.

SPEAKER_03

How DJs went with big with planners. That was our number one episode. Top episode we've ever done. Great, I mean a great name. Number two, also same season, episode nine. Dance four bands and DJ Exit Plans. I mean, that's a hot topic. Is it? Yeah, like how how are you gonna walk away from this? Now we jump to season five. Season five, episode one. Wedding DJ Tips and Stories. Branding, the gear, and the impact of iconic songs. Great title. I think. Wordy. Wordy, but good. Then we go to the chili. We go back to the Highline Chili Skyline Chili. I think because they probably see they listen to some episode, they probably won't go back to the first one.

SPEAKER_06

Right, right, right.

SPEAKER_03

I'm guessing. Right. Because we were new out of the gate.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, we were. Um I fucked up that Skyline Chili. You did. Yeah, yeah, you did. Yeah, that was terrible. But I'd redeem myself later. Fuse took me to the actual

Top Episodes And Listener Stats

SPEAKER_01

place, and it was delicious. Yeah. Anyway.

SPEAKER_03

And then our last one, number five, pay your DJ or pass the pickle.

SPEAKER_01

Season one, episode four, pay your DJ or pass the pickles. I don't know what we're talking about. What was the pickles?

SPEAKER_06

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Pay your pickles. I don't remember that one. I should have probably looked into it more. I grabbed this at the last minute here. Pay your DJ or pass the pickles. There had to be something. But that is intriguing. I'm like, what the f- what is he talking about? What pickles are we talking about? You're not paying them money, you're just giving them pickles.

SPEAKER_01

There had to be something about pickles in it. Because AI helps generate these titles, and then I usually tweak them. Yeah, you do.

SPEAKER_03

Uh, what else? Do we have about the the hundred episodes here? How are people finding us? I thought this was interesting. Okay. The most utilized platform so far is for us is Spotify. Not surprising, not a big shocker. Apple number two, iHeartRadio. Wow. Interesting. Web browser. I'm surprised there's a hit over 10%.

unknown

Wow.

SPEAKER_03

And then some of them are just checking out the embedded player, apparently. Okay. Now, again, this isn't taking into consideration the YouTube channel, so that could be higher. Where are they listening from? Oh. We did good in New Zealand, I think, or one of those places recently. No, Belgium, was it? I can't remember. Anyway, as you might expect, North America coming in number one. Number two, Europe. But number three kind of threw me for a loop. Oceana? Where is that? Number three. That's where you're going, man. Who is there? We're getting one percent. Australia. That's what that is. Yeah. Oh, okay. Oh, is that what it is? Okay, Australia's counted in that. Okay. I mean, it's doing better than Asia, apparently. Damn. And then South America, we got to do something there. Maybe we're going on down there. We need to add some more flavor. I mean, we got a couple downloads, but not enough. Speaks but we need to put it out in Spanish, I guess. I guess so. Or Portuguese. Yeah. Portuguese, man. They didn't listen to our um they don't get down with us in Africa either. They must not listen to our single de Mayo episode, apparently. What else we got? I wasn't even gonna bring that one up. How many downloads? All time. You have to guess? Any guess? Nah. All time as of recording. Now again, we've kind of split it in the last little bit, so this number's probably a smidge low. Low. All right, go ahead. 40K. Okay. We're gonna hit 10K soon. That's our next number that we got to hit. But that's pretty good for two years in. Yeah. I looked it up. I was like, hey, how does this rank compared to other ones? Non-celebrity. Sure. We're up there, bro. I mean, we're doing a good job. We're doing better than 90% of those episodes out there. Yeah, yeah. Most of them quit after 10. Yeah, 10 is the metric. So, anyway, I was trying to think of top 10 moments. I came up with 10 ideas. So I love the urinal challenge.

SPEAKER_01

That was great.

SPEAKER_03

I think that was episode one or two.

SPEAKER_01

When we were in the airport the other day, we were standing next to each other.

SPEAKER_03

He came right up to me. Yeah, I wrote I intentionally did it so I could bring this episode up. Then the next thing I saw.

SPEAKER_01

Then I was trying to see your dick.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, you were waiting. The next thing I saw, I'm like, he's like, hey, buddy. And he puts his hand off, and I'm like, wait, what's holding everything else together down there, bro?

SPEAKER_01

Putting my hand right on your bum while you're peeing.

SPEAKER_03

The initial can you find the one? Oh, yeah. The Whitney one was.

SPEAKER_01

I nailed that shit on the third.

SPEAKER_03

You did. That was good. And uh I love the fact that we share some music. Yeah. We did a live episode which was bummed terribly, but still. Yeah, almost.

SPEAKER_01

Early. Early cancellation.

SPEAKER_03

I love the Mike Walter interview. Yeah, Mike was. Is that to date the only one interview? Only interview. People love the war stories, the story time. The rants are pretty good. I love the clips that you pick. Uh, number nine, the back room. It's kind of one of my things I've loved about this podcast. And of course, the listeners. Hell yeah, man. Couldn't do it without you guys.

SPEAKER_01

Let's see what Joe's came up with. I did come up with it. I want to give shout out to Saquon. Okay. Because this story, this, this, this, this.

SPEAKER_07

We gotta speak.

SPEAKER_01

This this saying, I think it's gone global. Oh, yeah. Because, you know, I'm I'm I'm we're recording this early. It'll be over by the time this one comes out. But I'm going to Australia next weekend or Tokyo, then Australia, to speak at Beat Mix. And some guys were pulling me up on WhatsApp or Instagram or something. They're like, Dude, we're so stoked. We're, you know, you're coming down and everybody. He's like, we even got people down here running around saying, we gotta stink. You need to bring it with you. You should bring the button with you. Oh, I should bring the button. That should be your opener. Should be an opener. Because I'm talking on a topic I don't even want to talk about. What if I just open with that? Or you end with it. But but like, do you ever think though of like anything? Like, I'm trying to think of the stuff though that you've clipped up, you know, and sent to me. And like, you're like, this is so good. Or the stuff that people have sent you, and we're like, we were crying. The fragrance one is hilarious. The fragrance, the fragrance one, or the the the YouTube guy. No, the it was the Uber driver. Uber driver guy. That had me crying. Yeah. And I didn't remember it being that funny, but then when you sent me the clip, yeah. And then I started saying the cilia. The cilia. That was a funny one. But what's the number one?

SPEAKER_03

Oh man, the other one was the Monopoly game with the kids.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Where where I go, man, I got worried there were games. And you go, what are we fucking building houses?

SPEAKER_00

And I'm like, I go, never mind, dude. It was like Connect Four, but then I'm that was a good one.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just trying to think of the ones that were I'm like, I've listened back and I'm just crying.

SPEAKER_03

Well, and I think part of it is like whenever we finish these, I always think, oh man, there's these kind of suck. Right, right. And then we come back and I'm like, man, we did give some good gold. Or there was some or chemistry.

SPEAKER_01

What happens is normally Wednesdays are so interesting because people will start sending me quotes that either I said or you said. Yeah. We have no context. And I'm like, man, you gotta help me out.

SPEAKER_04

I've had people hit me up, though. Really? Really? We were talking about the weed thing, and then and then he quotes me like, because you can't hear me on the mic. Yeah. When I say something like, Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Like, does weed help with creativity? I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But you're not like write on the mic.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah. And he's like, he's like, dude, that was hilarious.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. And I don't know, Wednesdays are kind of great for the release, though. I mean, just like when they come out, and then people like people, or they find something they're like, dude, I never thought about doing this, and that was like a great tip or whatever, or a great piece of gear. Yeah. Or I bought this, and man, it changed my damn whole workflow or whatever. Totally. Anyway, I hope you guys like it. We're gonna keep on rolling with it and and hopefully, you know, get more Patreon members, get more listeners, and keep it cranking. Hey, real quick, Joe, should we explain the back room or just let people figure it out?

SPEAKER_03

I think we should explain. All right, it's our Patreon. We call it the back room, a community for you, our listeners, the booth heads. And if you're not in there, you are missing a ton of stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Things like bonus episodes, exclusively recorded monthly for backroom members. Plus the tracks that we pull that actually work for the events when we play them and when you play them. Early bashed episodes, giveaways. Look, we have the good stuff there, not junk. We're not gonna email you some sticker.

SPEAKER_03

And it's $19.99 a month for now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, for now. Go to patreon.com beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Again, Patreon.com slash Beyond the DJ Booth Podcast.

SPEAKER_03

Join us and our booth head community in the back room. Let's hit some music. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

I wanna know. I wanna know. Hey, Annie, I wanna know. What's on your players, Danny? I wanna know. I wanna know.

SPEAKER_03

All right. When this drops, it'll almost be end of summer. Okay, yeah. We've got to talk about it again. Song

What We Mean By Back Room

SPEAKER_03

of the summer. Yeah. I've got gone down the rabbit hole, went to Spotify, went to all the different channels to see like what they're saying. Okay. This was Did you ask AI at all? I did not, no. I just went on Spotify, they created a list of the contenders. Okay. I got 12. Okay. Let's probably put the headphones on in case you're not familiar with one of the tracks. But we're gonna play a little bit of them. Oh jeez, that's the that font is about way too small. So you might have to give us uh Saquon when these things were released. But here's the the samples. If you guys are listening to this and you don't know, first one is let them know TI. My one viral video of the year.

SPEAKER_04

Ren it to the check of flare, rent it through the real light twin.

SPEAKER_03

When did this come out, Saquon?

SPEAKER_04

Uh looks like 118.

SPEAKER_03

So in January. Yep. Okay. Next one, choosing Texas. LL Langley.

SPEAKER_07

She's from Texas, I can tell you.

SPEAKER_03

He's just stepping around the road. When did that come out? That came out of last year. Last year. It just started to pop this chance. Yeah. Aperture. I don't get the I didn't even have this in my library, bro. Really? No. Listen to it. I mean, it doesn't contend with this because it's a good thing.

Song Of The Summer Contenders

SPEAKER_03

It's a better one.

SPEAKER_04

No.

SPEAKER_03

When did that come out?

SPEAKER_04

January.

SPEAKER_03

Also January. January had a lot of music. This one I didn't have. Me neither. Don Tolliver. It's a good album. Yeah. Here's this track. I like Don Tolliver. Alright, January. Then we got uh Dracula, Tame and Paula. I like this track. I do too.

SPEAKER_06

The night is almost along still the moment. Plus Jenny.

SPEAKER_03

Isn't Jenny in the uh Pink Panthers? Uh one of those. One of those. A K-pop group? Yeah, I think so. Sounds right. Talk to you. This is one of the biggest house songs records of the year. Put this one out.

SPEAKER_04

Uh March.

SPEAKER_03

March?

SPEAKER_04

Yep, March 6th.

SPEAKER_03

Janish? Shut the fuck up. Drake?

SPEAKER_04

Are you playing this anymore? No.

SPEAKER_03

Not even that. No. Yeah, I haven't either.

SPEAKER_04

That's the only song I like on that album. Really? It's crazy.

SPEAKER_03

Stella Lefty. Country Banger. Scooter's got a good blend of this. I haven't had anybody request of it. And he loves it. This is on repeat in my house.

SPEAKER_01

Oh no. Oh no. Puerto Rico. Oh no. It tanked on you the other night, but it just puts me in a good mood, man.

SPEAKER_03

He broke it out. Tanked on me. That's the first time. Actually, I played it this last week too. Kind of, I think it's the trend's over. It's over. It's over. It's quick. Actually, I talked to Drew and he was like, dude, you actually play that at a wedding? He's like, that's even for me, he said, that's ballsy. Really? Dude, I don't care. I'm gonna throw it out there. He did. Yeah. I was there. Uh this guy's been getting a lot of hate. Josh Fawal.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, what's what's the story?

SPEAKER_03

Because he's like an AI guy. Oh, yeah. Uh, like a prayer. What do you call it? It's actually a good mix of the though. The original's so good, though. It's kind of hard for me to leave off of that. Then we got uh Pink Panther stateside. Did you play that the other night that Joshua was? I didn't play that version.

SPEAKER_06

It's always on the charts, but are you playing this allowing?

SPEAKER_03

Nobody's asked me for it.

SPEAKER_01

And then Daisies. Man, this hasn't been out too long. When it's coming out last summer, this I'm not allowing this. Are you sure? Yeah, yeah. It says July 1st, right there or something, doesn't it?

SPEAKER_07

Well, yeah, you can't add.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I've just got it. I love dude, I love that song. I love that song. I love I love that album. You know I do. But I'm I'm disallowing that. Fuck that. That's great. All right. So what are we going with here?

SPEAKER_03

Anything that kind of stupid.

SPEAKER_01

I already said it, man. I said it a few episodes ago. I've said it and I don't uh it's not particularly because I love it. I I don't, I'm not even a big country guy, but it's choosing Texas. I'm with you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_03

We're gonna remember this year, this summer, by choosing Texas. I'm sorry. Are you playing it out? Yeah, okay. You're playing it out during dinner, right?

SPEAKER_06

No, I played it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I played the right. Yeah, it's gotta be an edit. It's gotta be not the radio version. Yeah, yeah, right. Not a radio edit.

SPEAKER_04

But does it count, it doesn't count a song of the summer if you have to edit it. You can't. Like, that doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_03

Well, the original is so catchy in the car. I think people are listening to it in the car, but to play it at a gig would be kind of odd. Like this aren't gig song songs. I mean, I'm not sure.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, that's what I'm trying to figure out. Like the song of the summer, like just just just the song.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_01

We're gonna give it a generality, right?

SPEAKER_03

But I do play it. Yeah. Not the original, but I play an edit of it. Right. All right. Brian B here. If you like the music I share on our podcast, just know I'm holding back a bit. The real stuff lives on my personal DJ Patreon. This is where I put all of my exclusive edits, my curated lists, the exact tracks I'm pulling from every pool, Patreon, band camp, and private email lists that I subscribe to. That's patreon.com slash DJ Brian B official. What else we got? Question of the day? Let's end this thing. Question of the day.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. Wow, people write books. Bro, hold on a second. I just got I just had a callback moment from me and Saquon last week went to see Neo and Akon. By the way, if that show comes to your city, go see it. It was fucking fantastic. I remember you saying that. I'm telling you, production-wise, nuts sound uh uh strippers, uh uh

Brian’s DJ Patreon Music Pipeline

SPEAKER_01

set lists, like but dude, the first look that Akon had is like you know, his suit. It was Neo. I'm sorry, the first they go back and forth, right? It's not no one doesn't open for the other. Okay, okay. And on the show we saw, Neo comes out first. Bro, he's got on the suit, badass, like three piece with the kind of flare track at 100 degrees. Oh, easily 100 degrees.

SPEAKER_00

This man had a fedora on. When I'm telling you, Saquon said it was full 45 degrees. The brim has to have translucent technology in it. It was this Saquon, am I lying? Bro, it's just he did two songs with the brim. This I cannot see Brian right now. He didn't fucking move, didn't move 45 degrees over his eyes. All the all the moves, pop, pop, pop, pop,

When Veteran DJs Phone It In

SPEAKER_00

pop, get up on the stripper, twerk, pop, pop, pop, pop. I'm telling you right now, Saquon, am I lying? Was the brim like this? Just like him.

SPEAKER_03

Did he did he have the he had to have the the the tape? 45 degrees. Yeah, how's that tape sticking to it?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. How do you dance and sing? How do you know where the mic is?

SPEAKER_01

I can barely see the mic right now on my chin. That's crazy. I can't see you. Yeah, I can't see Saquon over there. Bro, I'm telling you. That's crazy. This man did a whole first set in that 45 degree fedora.

SPEAKER_03

That's crazy. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, read the you want to read the question? You got your glasses on. Brett from Lux Entertainment. L U X X, double X. No, no, no. That one says L U X. I'm sorry, L X E. L U X X is uh low stacks. Okay, sorry. I don't this is, I think it's a different okay.

SPEAKER_03

Maybe. I don't know. I don't know. Anyway, Brett, you say there are a number of DJs in my market. Great guys who I've known for a while. They always talk the talk, and I just assumed they were good at what they do. Oh, this is great. As it turns out, they're terrible DJs. Recent comments, as well as audio and video evidence from venues and other vendors have left me baffled. Very questionable programming and mixing skills that would make shoes and a dryer sound pleasant. The sort of things you wouldn't expect from veteran DJs in the mid to high price bracket. I feel like they are doing the industry, the craft, and most of all their clients a disservice. Part of me wants to offer help. Maybe reach out to see if they are okay. Have they phoned it in and are now going through the motions? I'm both concerned and surprised and feel like I'm need I need to do something. Have either of you ever been in a similar situation? That's funny, man. I mean, funny, but not good. Do you have a chance to ever see like do you how do you would you even see your competition? Or people that you looked up to, like if you didn't. I'm just wondering if I've ever done that. I I don't know if I have. I mean, I've seen photo evidence sometimes.

SPEAKER_01

Well, we we no, we really don't usually see full shows. We either see clips or we see them at a networking event. Right. But even that on like doors open and stuff, like we play it like intentionally, not playing September. Right, right, right, right. You know, choosing Texas. Like, we're playing it like cool and like sexy. And sometimes like we'll go to these networking meetings and me and Randy look at each other, like, what is this guy doing right now? Right. Like, this is crazy music for this time. You know, like um, so we don't see a lot of competitors, and again, like I've definitely never seen full sets, probably, of any of my competitors. I, you know, it's rare that I see a full set from even one of my guys. Yeah, you know, normally the same thing unless I popped in and surprise visit or saw clips, or you know, if something goes bad, normally I'm gonna hear about it from a vendor that was there. Hey, you know, your boy wasn't really up with blunt standards and that's happened before.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But like, I I don't know, Brett, that it's your job necessarily to to reach out and and quote unquote help. I mean, selfishly, it's kind of a good thing, man, because the cream rises at the top. If they're in your market, I mean, eventually your company's probably gonna start to get these shows, like, and maybe they are burned out, or maybe they are just kind of phoning it in, or maybe they just didn't. I mean, when when I first started my company, I had a lot of DJs that didn't even know how to DJ really. They didn't know how to mix because you didn't have to. Right. You know, we've talked about this before, but as the years have gone on, these people, the the the brides that are and grooms that are getting married now grew up listening to good DJs. Right. So now you can't show up and just let a let a song fade out and fade the next one in and just call that DJing. Like they're not gonna let that fly. Yeah. So I think that you're probably seeing the end of some of these people's careers, and they're just not willing to download the edits or you know, learn new programming or learn new sets or go out and actually learn how to mix. And I just don't know if that's something you're just gonna come off maybe as arrogant or a know it all. I I think you just let it let them play themselves out and maybe take the business. I I I mean selfishly, that's kind of the good news about it. You know what I mean? I I don't know that it's making you look bad as it is making them look bad. And it's for the craft, man. I mean, you know how the culture, the craft, whatever. I mean, there there's so many different types of DJs and levels of DJing. Like, I I you gotta take that out of it sometimes in the private event space. You know what I mean? Like, we're we're we're playing what other people want. Like, we're not really, like I said, breaking records or curating these sets from scratch. Like, we're basing it off their list. Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. You know who does a good job of like taking care of like the community of DJs in their area is you in the state of Utah DJs. I remember Rob Foray, I think he was probably the guy who did it. But he basically got everybody together and was like, listen. I did this before here. Yeah, let's do an MC workshop. And you know, he gave all the knowledge he had. Sure. Could have kept that for himself. Yeah, he could have, you know, and then that spawned into let's do a mix off, or not a mix-off, but just like some mixing workshops, or let's bring in, let's pull our money together and bring in an Allenberg, you know, whatever. And now I I don't know if Rob still does that to this day, but that community of DJs has always supported one another. And I know that's a super rare thing in that I have seen. I haven't seen every other thing. Salt Lake City guys are very tight. Well, yeah. Totally. They're all competing for the same business. And nobody, I mean, I'm sure maybe internally there's maybe a show that someone wants that someone else gets, but like you wouldn't see it online. No one's talking dirty about somebody else on that. They're all trying to help each other get better. So maybe you become that guy for your market.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know where you're located, but Brad, I will say this, man. I think I've become jaded over the years because I did do this. I did that exact thing in North Carolina. It was called the Triangle, which is Riley Durham Chapel Hill DJ Association, T DJ A. And I was green, I was young, I wanted to meet more DJs. I wanted the DJs to stop talking shit about each other at the wedding shows. And it lasted for, I don't know, four, five, six years. We would have a meeting, I think quarterly or something like that. I would try and, you know, take something to the meeting that we learned from, and then it became like these guys just were saying, Let's just meet up for wings and don't talk about pricing and mixing. And I was like, Man, I I you know, at that time my kids were young, I was like, I I'm sorry guys, like I got better shit to do than sit here and watch, you know, uh NBA game and eat wings. Yeah, like I I'm not trying to be a dick, but like like and then it became infighting egos and it it ruined it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I just ended up walking out of it and they they kind of kept it as a social group for a while and I had nothing to do with it. But I was so proud of it. It was one of my proudest things, and then it just was also

Building A Better Local DJ Scene

SPEAKER_01

one of my most embarrassing things to watch it fall it fall apart. Yeah. And watch these guys just cutthroat each other and you know, and talk shit about each other. It just became so I think I I think Brett, from that standpoint, that's just my experience, and I'm very jaded. I think the Salt Lake City thing is kind of a rarity. It is. I don't know many that do it. I don't either.

SPEAKER_03

And maybe again, I don't know the whole the the country from every DJ angle, but the other thing I would say too, Brett, is you may want to consider inviting them to a DJ show, like the DJ Collective. I we took our only our team, I didn't invite the whole thing, but uh the whole area, but in Florida, we took uh man, like six of our guys to the DJ Expo. This was like years ago. Yeah, and one of the things that they walked away with was like an appreciation for the way we do things. Yeah. They're like, oh, we're actually pretty good. Yeah. Like we have a pretty good situation worked out. Right. And and that's not shady on the DJs who are showing there, but it's just such a span. You have like, you know, the very beginners, and you forget sometimes how green some people can be in the beginning. And then as you progress, you go look back, you go, man, okay, we have gotten better as a unit or as a better as a DJ, whatever. And taking them to the show or at least inviting them is they're speaking to everybody, you know, like it's it's a good way to to elevate what is it, the lifts all boats. What's that saying? Rising tide, raises all ships. So maybe it's something like that. You just throw it out there and say, Hey guys, it'd be cool to have us a good presence from our area. Let's all go together. Maybe you ride together if you guys are tight like that.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I'll I'll add one last comment, Brett. I mean, and if you are drawn to one of these people, or maybe they're your mentor of yours, you like them, you feel like you genuinely could help, just say, hey, what do what are you doing um next Saturday? Or hey man, what do you think about coming out and shadowing me one weekend? Don't even float it like you've seen like a decline in their show or a shitty show. Just be like, hey man, I was kind of wondering, like, what do you think about coming out and shadowing me? And then maybe it it becomes the flip the next time. Hey man, you know what? I'd love to come come shadow you. I mean, you heard two, three episodes ago that would that we just talked about and and I just did two weeks ago. I went out with Brian. I I he didn't pay me. He he mentioned it casually in a in a car ride one day. He was like, Man, you should come out and see how I do something one day. I didn't charge him. Didn't didn't I didn't get charged? And we have both charged for people to come shadow us before. Um, I didn't get charged or nor did nor did I get paid. I mean some premium coffee. I got I got premium coffee, I got a uh uh Jimmy John sub, and I got um I got knowledge from it. I I got new mixes, I got uh a better appreciation of like that like a uh energetic cocktail hour, doors open, I got ideas to use like with the battery-powered jackeries now, and like so I didn't I got back home Sunday night and was felt like it was a weekend well spent. Oh, totally, and I would have had that whole weekend off. I could have just sat here and enjoyed my time off. But diddling around. We were out there freaking diddling, we were out there grinding instead

Shadowing As The Low-Key Solution

SPEAKER_01

of diddling. Yeah, totally. There was no diddling to be had, there was no time to diddle, no diddle time.

SPEAKER_03

Um, so anyway, I will say too that uh doing exactly what you said, shadowing uh having him shadow you, but also you shadowing them. I've had just as much learning nuggets from people that aren't doing it at the same level as me. And that's not me trying to you know pat myself on the back. I'm just saying I learned what not to do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Or I see something off, I'm like, ooh, I'm glad I I need to make a note of that to do this. Yeah, just different. And I also get on the flip side too, the good and the bad.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you asked me in the car. We were driving home and you were like, What is it? And I was like, Oh, you're doing this one thing with the mic, like before you make sure it's alive. Yeah. And you're going, uh, or something. And and then the other thing, I'm like, you gotta get a mic with a power switch. Cause like when you when you stick it inside your booth, it's feeding back. Yeah, I noticed that. And so, like, I mean, if you're not willing to take criticism if you think you're playing a perfect show or no, you're perfect MC, like there that doesn't exist. It doesn't matter. I don't know. One person that I'm like, that guy's perfect. Yeah, in every aspect of private event world. I'm not. I'm never I mean there is no such person. So you have to be willing to to learn yourself sometimes. Anyway, good episode, man. Yeah, so yeah, likewise.
