You can book great events and still feel like the money disappears the second it hits your account. We get into the unsexy part of being a working DJ that decides whether you stay stressed or build something durable: cash flow. With The DJ Collective coming up in Raleigh, we shout out why education matters and why Rich Cranston’s talk hits so hard, especially when the question is “I just booked a $3,000 wedding, where should the money go?” We unpack the mindset shift from chasing revenue to understanding annual cash flow, taxes, profit, savings, and investing so each booking actually improves your life.

Then we pivot into customer experience and event upgrades that feel premium without being complicated. A simple thank-you video from a brand founder sparks a bigger idea for DJs: short personalized videos right after the contract and payment can boost trust fast. From there we break down real wedding field testing with EsStart, including Instant Spotlight guest photos on a TV and QR code song requests that update in real time. We talk practical guardrails, how many table QR codes you really need, why wireless HDMI is clutch, and the one item you cannot forget if you bring a TV.

We also hit the human side: team-building ideas, travel headaches, and the content grind when social media growth feels stuck. To wrap, we answer a great listener question: if we had to restart our DJ business with no reviews, no network, and no reputation, what’s the first priority? If you’re building a wedding DJ business, a mobile DJ company, or any service brand, you’ll take away moves you can use this week. Subscribe, share this with a DJ friend, and leave a review that tells us what you want us to dig into next.

Patreon Deal And DJ Collective

SPEAKER_05

What's up, everybody? Welcome back to Beyond the DJ Booth. I'm Joe Bunn. We've got Brian B here, and uh it's Wednesday, and it's time to launch a brand new episode. What's up, dude? It's called Beyond the DJ Booth.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, not the podcast. I don't think you did. Maybe you did. I'm sorry. I'm recording a lot. I don't think you did. We got a lot of batch recording.

SPEAKER_05

You want me to do it over? I mean, yeah. What are we doing, guys? What are we doing? We're two years into this at this point.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Where have you been?

SPEAKER_06

Anyway, what's going on? Well, we got a little Patreon announcement today.

SPEAKER_05

Right on. If you're not in the Patreon, what are you even doing with your life? Patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Shout out Justin Fam or Fom P H A M or P Ham. You know him? No? Do you?

SPEAKER_06

No, no idea where he's at either. He didn't say. He didn't say. Well, shout out Justin Fam. Wherever in the world you are. Fom. He hit a Patreon. We've got a little bit of goodness left. We've got four days left. Four days left to take advantage of this offer.

SPEAKER_05

Listen, stop dicking around. If you're not dialed in to what the DJ Collective is, it's a conference that Brian, myself, and Jason J and I started in 2017. We've done it all over the country. And now we are basically making Raleigh the home of this conference. It was here last year. It's going to be here this year. All day content, November 16th and November 17th. Most people come in on that Sunday night. We have a little chill party that night. 16th content, 16th night cocktail party at the venue, which is called the Maxwell Gorgeous Venue. 17th all day content. 17th that night, big party, downtown Raleigh to close everything out. Most people leave on the 18th whenever they want. We are bringing in so many different speakers, sponsors. Please go to the DJ CollectiveOfficial.com for more information. And anybody that is a Patreon member is going to get access to an exclusive code. An exclusive code to save you hundreds of dollars. Okay. And we will be posting that. It's already posted in the back room right now on Patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. That do good? You did great. I got a speaker announcement today. Man, listen, this right here alone to me is worth the price of admission. Rich Cranson, who is uh helps me and basically leads the education portion of the DJ's vault, is one of our guest speakers, and he's a general session speaker. Uh he spoke last year. I I I would argue to say that not only is he great DJs. I actually seen him play a party before, but he is one of the smartest, most savvy business people in the DJ space. Which is a rare combination. Totally agree. Most people are either good at one or the other. It was my favorite talk of the conference. For me. This dude is goaded. I'm telling you, this is worth the price of admission. He will not let us down. He's gonna give you stuff that you can take away, actionable experiences.

SPEAKER_06

Do you have the talk? I do, I was just pulling it up. So this is what he told me. He said, I did some polling around of DJ's Assemble yesterday. He was there. Yeah. Specifically to some potential and those that are attending the DJC. And this is what I'm thinking will land big. He's calling it very similar kind of subject

Cash Flow Over Revenue Mindset

SPEAKER_06

matter, revenue. So he's talking about revenue is vanity, cash flow is reality. Every DJ asks the same question. I just booked a $3,000 wedding. Where should the money go? Before you can answer that, you need to understand your annual cash flow. In this practical session, Rich Cranston walks through how one event fits into the bigger financial picture and demonstrates a similar system for assigning every dollar to a purpose and everything from taxes and profits to equipment, savings, and investing.

SPEAKER_05

Good stuff.

SPEAKER_06

That usually is a dry subject matter. Any financial talk is dry. And he somehow makes it feel like it's not dry. Yep. That's all I can say. And there's not enough talks on finances in general. I don't think.

SPEAKER_05

I I mean I I was talking about this on uh one of the live vault calls that we were doing the other day. Like there's just not enough talk about finance in the world in general, including elementary school, middle school, high school, college, like financial literacy or anything about saving, investing, not doing dumb shit with your money. I I didn't learn any of that when I went to school. And I went to uh a great university. Yeah, I went to an okay high school. Yeah, I don't fucking know anything about it. Yeah. And it's been a a a thorn in my side in kryptonite ever since I started making money. Yeah. When I was, you know, 17 years old. Yeah. I mean, it's like, oh, I got money in the bank, I'm just gonna buy something. It's like it doesn't work that way. Right. Not when you're a business.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And you'll run out. You will run out of money. I've done it before. Totally. Anyway, please show up, listen, pay attention to this man. Let's go.

SPEAKER_06

We got a new bit today. Oh. New potential reoccurring segment. Ooh. Even made a new video. Ooh. Drop it. Hit it.

SPEAKER_01

Lock your list. You only get one shot. Better pick the fucking loop and no do overs.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, I love these AI generated ones. Wow. So have you seen that internet trend where like you get these options? Right, right.

SPEAKER_05

They'll get they'll get the rank them in real Oleg's GMT. And be like, number nine. Umil, blah, blah, blah. Oh, that's number one. Yes. Yes. Okay.

SPEAKER_06

So the topic or category today is best throwback hip hop song intros. Best throwback song hip hop? One through ten. Ten banger. So you need the headphones because you're going to need to listen to this. And uh we're going to give these to you in real time. It means you can once you give it a ranking, you can't go back.

SPEAKER_05

Okay.

SPEAKER_06

So you gotta really think through these songs. I think they're pretty good. These are iconic throwback intros.

SPEAKER_05

This is the one that's messed up. Is it the

Unlock Your List Hip Hop Intros

SPEAKER_05

adapter?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I got it.

SPEAKER_06

So I'm gonna give it the rankings in real time, but you will be seeing it on the screen if you're watching this on YouTube. We'll see where he locks in. Alright, song number one. Check, check, check. Yep. Damn. One through ten. Four. Four. Back that as up. Such an iconic opener. Alright, number two. Damn, dude.

SPEAKER_02

Y'all gonna make me lose my mind.

SPEAKER_06

Three?

SPEAKER_01

Got ten options.

SPEAKER_06

Ten options.

SPEAKER_01

He's ranking them through ten, one through ten. Yeah. Or like initially, or can he come back? No, he can't come back.

SPEAKER_05

That's the that's the trick. So four and three are locked.

unknown

Okay. All right.

SPEAKER_06

All right, next one.

SPEAKER_03

Look.

SPEAKER_06

Six. Okay. One shot. Next one. Get low? Uh three, four, and six are gone. Yeah, I know. Um five. Five? Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Seven? For in the club? Wow. Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_06

Eight. All right. We got three more left.

SPEAKER_05

I love this so much. Two. Two. Okay. Nine. Nine. Okay. So you got the ones hypnotized better be in here. Uh. Is hypnotized on the list or not? Yeah. Uh I had to put that at one then. One.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, so wait, hold on. Let me see what we got left then. So we got. You said there's only one song left, so hopefully it's shitter. Let's see. Eight, three, four. Which one are you missing here? Ten. Oh, you're missing number ten. Yeah. It's better be a.

SPEAKER_00

Switch.

SPEAKER_05

Nello. Change the title. Unlock your list. Hypnotize one and then fat Joe ten.

SPEAKER_06

Uh so here we go. We had uh we'll allow it. I'm allowing. Thank you. Thank you. So number one was hypnotize. Number two, the next episode. Yep. Number three, party up. Yep. Number four, back that ass. Yep. Number five, get low. Yep. Six. I wouldn't have put this this high. Lose yourself M M.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, it's it's iconic. I always think about I I I call it I I am specifically considering crowd re white people crowd reaction. White people, I'm calling it WPCA. White people crowd reaction.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

White people, WPCR.

SPEAKER_06

Why don't we do it? Number seven, you had in the club. See, I would have at least put that ahead of um, it does have a big reaction among the white people. Annie up, number eight. White people don't know that song. Yeah, most people don't. Then you had California Love number nine.

SPEAKER_01

I think you started, I think you started your list too high.

SPEAKER_06

Nah.

SPEAKER_01

You started too high. I started at three.

SPEAKER_05

I still I still feel good about it.

SPEAKER_06

I still feel good about it. And then 10, which was really hypnotized, but we're gonna make the switch. Lean back.

SPEAKER_05

I was waiting the whole time for a hypnotize. But lean back is too low, but I'm not like disgusted. Any up should have been 10 for me. For WPCR, White People Cry Reaction. Well done.

SPEAKER_06

We'll have to bring this segment back on again.

SPEAKER_05

It's a good segment.

SPEAKER_06

Let's move into story time. Go on. Oh, by the way. Yeah. Before we go into story time, we will put in the Patreon our best edits of these top 10. Good idea, Brian. Good idea, but a little bonus content. Hell yeah. Brian B here. If you like the music I share on our podcast, just know I'm holding back a bit. The real stuff lives on my personal DJ Patreon. This is where I put all of my exclusive edits, my curated lists, the exact tracks I'm pulling from every pool, Patreon, fan camp, and private email lists that I subscribe to. I'm doing all the digging so that you don't have to. Just the stuff that makes people go, yo, this DJ is different. So if you're tired of playing the same old, same old, go to patreon.com slash DJ Brian B official. And if you want a little more access, there's a VIP tier with coaching and some extra perks. That's patreon.com slash DJ Brian B oficial. Now let's move into story time. So you just had your team building night? We did. And uh tell us a little bit about it.

SPEAKER_05

Man, we always try and do um, I would say two to two to three things a year with the whole gang. Okay. Um not including like a Zoom call. You know, we usually have two or three meetings a year where we do full staff on a Zoom call, but I'm talking about an in-person fun thing. And especially in the summer, it's gotta be in the summer. Last summer we did my house cookout. One of my DJs is a chef.

SPEAKER_06

Uh you don't have a pool.

SPEAKER_05

I don't have a pool. But we just hung. We just hung out. And 100 degree weather. It was hot. Uh most people were inside. Okay. Okay. Now, two summers before that, the last two summers previous, we had gone to one of my DJs, Chris Kingsley's house, and he has a pool, and we did the cookout there. Okay. Uh Kalanji did all the food. Like, I mean, I mean, barbecue, uh pulled pork, brisket. Nice. Uh baked bean. I mean, the dude makes everything at his house. Like, he's not, he doesn't do this for a living. Like, he just loves to cook. And I paid him, you know, paid him a little bit. And anyway, um, this year we were at this place, and you turned me on to it called Raleigh Game Show. Flip ahead a s a slide or two, take one. Um Raleigh

Team Building Night With Game Shows

SPEAKER_05

Game Show is some guy, you know, and I how did you find it? It was just Target Wife. Yeah, I find it. So Brian's birthday was a few months ago. Me, Ashley, Brian, Tara, and then another uh his neighbors, friend, friend of his, uh went, and then there were two other girls that I were together. I don't know that they had signed up to be there at the same time. So we were all playing against each other. But it's exactly what you think it is. It's 12 podiums with a buzzer on top. Uh, and then the host, which happened to be the owner of the time we went, this time was a different guy, basically goes through different game shows that we know about everything from you know Family Feud to Who Wants to be a millionaire. There were a couple of skills challenges. Yeah, one clip. Yeah. You get it? What's this one? Who wants to be a millionaire? I can't remember what the question was.

SPEAKER_01

It was something like the next one.

SPEAKER_06

I think we have one more.

SPEAKER_01

E-man.

SPEAKER_06

There's the host.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, there was uh reveal the picture. Can he go again?

SPEAKER_01

No, you can't go again once you guys. 11.

unknown

Wolverine.

SPEAKER_05

Wolverine is it looks like it was fun. Would you guys enjoy it? Dude, they were like, we gotta do this again. We gotta do this again. We had the best time, man. Had a great time.

SPEAKER_06

Do they look forward to the summer hang one?

SPEAKER_05

More so because it's always a little bit different than like Yeah, I mean, the you know, the the the Christmas thing is always just like a bigger getting money too. Yeah, oh yeah. And bonus money. We do get that bonus money for reviews. I didn't do that last year, I think. Uh we did the jackets. Remember the jackets.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And so I don't know, we always do jackets, or sometimes it's a little small piece of gear, or you know, we did last year we did the the the floor mats, you know, the the fatigue mats, and like the three-inch gaff tape. And we always try and do something around Christmas, but there's always a big dinner, and and last year we did uh barbecue plays. But man, everybody loved this. And and I I Good for morale. Yeah, it's great for morale. The the guy is um really cool guy that owns it. He says he's crushing it. I think it's all off social content. Like that's the only marketing he's been doing. Wow. And he's just stays busy with corporate events, birthdays, things like that.

SPEAKER_06

Love it. Yeah. So my story has to do with a new service. I ordered some shirts. Okay. I've been having issues with the collar. You turned me onto those little collar holders, but I just in general, the shorts, the shirts have just they've ran their course. It's time for some new shirts. Okay. So I got targeted on collar collars and co. Yeah, I know this company. Uh I loved their branding. I love the way that they communicate. All of their emails were usually with pictures and videos and things like this. But as soon as I bought it, bought two items, which I'm gonna show you today. Actually, I need to go get them, but I'm gonna show it to you. Uh, I got this email. Welcome to the Collars and Co. Experience, right? I'm like, this is a shirt purchase. You know what I mean? Right. But like the way they made it feel was for super premium. Now these shirts aren't cheap. I think I paid like 200 bucks a piece, if not close to it, for each shirt. For each shirt. Mm-hmm. Pretty much up there.

SPEAKER_05

But when I That doesn't even sound like something you would spend money on.

SPEAKER_06

I usually don't, but I needed some new ones. It was time. So I need to see these. So, anyways, I get the shirts, and immediately in my inbox is another email from the owner. So if you click the next one, a secret surprise for you from our owner or founder Justin. And it looks like it's a video. So I click the button.

Premium Thank You Videos For Clients

SPEAKER_06

And what do I hear? This is me showing from my phone.

SPEAKER_07

Ryan. How's it going? It's Justin Bear, founder of Collars Co. Every day. I get to personally thank a couple of customers, and I wanted to thank you for your order. It means so much to me and our entire team. I have no doubt you're gonna love your product. So we'd love to see you posting and tagging on social media if you can. And we also want to hear your feedback, so please feel free to reach out to us. Thank you again for shopping at Collars and Co. and have a great day.

SPEAKER_06

Then it goes to this chat bot, which is done by I can't read it at the bottom, but whatever that is at the bottom, who it's who it's by. But it's in essence, it's basically like you can chat with the owner.

SPEAKER_05

What's the service called there, uh Segwan? Maverick? It says at the very bottom power by Maverick.

SPEAKER_06

Maverick?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

But I love the idea for like premium DJs doing something like this. We talked about it.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, we have thought about it. I put a few people on Bonjoro. Bonjoro. B-O-N-J-O-R-O. I know Trago started using it religiously now. But he's also single op. Yeah. You know, so limited, limited leads, limited bookings, but I think he does it for every lead he gets or every booking he gets. Sure. For us, it would be me talking all day.

SPEAKER_06

But you know, we were talking about this because I was like, how can this guy, if he's selling a lot of these, do this? And you said that basically maybe he just thought of every male name that was out there recorded all in one day, but still have a lot of videos to shoot.

SPEAKER_05

I I mean, he could have done that, or I did notice this time that I'm watching it. Unlike the previous time I watched it, he did say, I'm lucky enough to get to talk to pick a couple of people orders. So he probably, you know, every day his assistant might walk in and go, This guy dropped four bills. He's a new customer. Let's do a Brian video. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. It's selective.

SPEAKER_05

Or again, once he's made that video, he didn't say, you know, I see you got the the the you know checkerboard blue, blah, blah. All you got to do is tag the video Brian. The next time a Brian order comes in, or a Joe, or a fucking Saquon. Like they ain't got a Saquon. They got a Joe. They got a Chris, they got a Brian, they got a Jim. They got a fucking Taylor. They got a Bob. They got a Robert. They got the common, the common fucking name.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. James, Jim. I just thought from a luxury standpoint, you know, it's a great touch.

SPEAKER_05

Did you do you respond back yet? I haven't yet. Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_06

I'm gonna be like, yo, is this really you? Or is this your what did I get?

SPEAKER_05

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Or you got my name wrong. Or it's yeah. Or it could be some AI shit. I don't know. Right? But I mean, these tools are out there. Yeah. And I think it just adds to the experience.

SPEAKER_05

I'm gonna go back to the guy if the shirts are worth 100%, man. I think it's I think it's imperative to do stuff like this. In fact, I told Randy, I was like, I think I want to get back into doing this. If not for the DJ company, I would be willing to do it for anybody that we send the contract, and then the contract comes back and the money comes back.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And then I told Randy, I said, just send me their name. Yeah. I told him this after after seeing this, um, their email address, right? Where they're getting married.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

And the date. That's all I need. Four things. Yeah. And then I I would be totally willing to make a Bonjuro and go, hey guys, it's Joe Bunn. I just want to say, oh, and they're DJ. I'm sorry. Yeah. I see you guys brook, Brian B. Man, the guy's been with me for 15 years. He is absolutely awesome. Your party at Carolina Inn is gonna be badass. I'm so excited y'all booked us. Thank you so much. I appreciate you. Like, how confident would they feel?

SPEAKER_04

I think 10 seconds. That's it. 15. How confident did they feel?

SPEAKER_05

In fact, I feel like maybe the move is just tell Randy to send me those every Friday. Yeah. Friday's kind of gonna be my slowest day. And just go bang, bang, bang, bang, do all 10 of them, 20 of them, however many shows we book this week. Yeah. I I'm complaining. I like Bon Joro, but to be fair, I I'm gonna look into this. Is it Maverick M A V E R I C K or Okay? I'm gonna look into this service. Yeah. Because I like this little chat window. Yeah. This came to your phone or your email?

SPEAKER_06

That came to my email, but I'm also Opening it on my phone. So this is a phone recording for me opening it from my phone. Gotcha, gotcha. Let me get the shirt.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_06

Oh, pull up. Oh yeah. One's a dress shirt. Okay. So here we go. I got two shirts for you. Okay. Let me check the quality. Feel that collar. Yeah, no, collar, premium. So it's no, there's no um sizing. Yeah, sizing's a little, I'm I'm gonna have to check on that first. I got extra large just to be safe, and I feel like I need to go to the large. I was about to say, I don't know, you don't seem very extra large.

SPEAKER_05

I need to I just didn't want to be too sometimes they they go so they but they're not like the 32, 13, like like a dress shirt normally is.

SPEAKER_06

Like normally it's the collar size of the sleeve link. And they have various different collar styles as well. You want to turn it around for the camera?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

These are nice, man.

SPEAKER_06

I thought they were gonna work out.

SPEAKER_05

I like this polo. I like the way the collar's kind of stiff, right? Oh, and it has collar stays in it. Yeah, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_06

These are nice, dude. Anyways, I'll let you know how the wear and tear of them are, but I just thought they were pretty good.

SPEAKER_05

They're really nice. Pretty, pretty, pretty shirts. So I know you were saying you did that small wedding yesterday or day before yesterday, and uh you took in TVs. I'm assuming you were you were on the S Start train. Pretty CP hook you up. He did. I I first real time, like really digging into it, right?

SPEAKER_06

Real time digging into it. Okay, instant spotlight or something else. You know what? So S Start reminds me, I was trying to think of a good analogy. It reminds me of like Serato in the sense that you can buy extras, oh, yeah, like pitching time, all the different like plugins if you I never really thought about it that way. Yeah, that's kind of what my brain was thinking because I didn't know what S-Start was like. Do they do this? Do they do that? Like I didn't understand. They do a lot, they do a ton. Yeah. So within one event, you can unlock these different things for that one client.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

So what I did was the instant spotlight, which we've talked about it random times, but I'll talk about it here. And then song requests. Oh. The new song requests. I used both of them. Okay. So the one I'm gonna tell you my. How many screens did you have set up? One screen. Okay. The room was weird. It was a circle with like an opening. So I had to put it like kind of towards the back. In fact, I have a picture of it here if you want to see it real quick. Okay. So it was kind of oh, yeah, right there.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

So it's a 75-incher.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, big boy.

SPEAKER_06

And I'm way on the other side. Gotcha. What's one thing you don't notice? No HDMI cable.

S-Start Instant Spotlight At Weddings

SPEAKER_06

Wireless. Wireless. Critical. Yeah, you are critical. You showed that on the show one time. Yeah. Gear find. You need to get those if you're going to do this. I think that that's critical because then I'm not tethered to this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This was to the left of this TV, is where the entrance is. So everybody would be walking over tape. Yeah, yeah. Just wouldn't have looked good, but this was really the best place for it. And it worked good. And it worked great. Wow. The other thing I would say too is um I printed out the QR codes, okay, which you build online beforehand through their system. Okay. There were six tables. They came in packs of eight. Those I get I did five by seven. The little uh table placards or whatever that was clear. Yeah. So okay, both sides.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

If I had to do it over, I would have ordered way more of those. Yeah. Because you don't think about it, but those four old displays on the circular tables, I could only I couldn't put it in the middle because that's where the displa that's where the four rolls are. So you need one on each side of the table. The other thing I would say, if you have long tables, we had a mixture of both. The long tables, if you only have one per table, half the table ain't gonna see it.

SPEAKER_05

Good point.

SPEAKER_06

So you need more than you think. But it is also on the screen. It is on the screen.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Or you can make it on the screen. Right. But it moves kind of fast. Okay. I mean, not super fast, but fast enough where you wish you wish you just had it on your thing. Okay. Um, the one cool part about this too is that now they've taken in AI uh things to it. So people are putting up, I picked a couple of them. Yeah. And they were hilarious. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

People didn't look like the cover of a GQ or whatever. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

So as people are walking in, this is where I was really using it. And I had a 35-person wedding. So this was a great, like, and they were on the boat. The couple was to go take pictures during cocktail hour. So I had to entertain these people, and I thought music would have done fine, but they were eating this up. Like adding all these pictures right out of the gate. Right out of the gate. I didn't say it one time. I never mentioned it ever. Oh shit. Things just kept rolling and they just kept adding more and more photos. Right on. And I'm talking old guests, young guests, everybody was using this. Listen to it.

SPEAKER_05

I I've I'm assuming they did not have a photo booth.

SPEAKER_06

They did not have a photo booth. Which helped. Yeah. But even when the couple came in, they're like, because I told them, I said, listen, I've never tried this before. I'm not charging you. This is just for me to try out. Yeah. And they go, you have to start adding this. This is so fun. That's them coming to me telling me. So I don't even have CP's number. I literally just like went on Instagram said, yo, this thing is a hit. Like crazy. Now, um, the one thing that I I screwed up on bringing the TV, we our guy didn't load the remote. And so I gotta send somebody. I almost didn't do it.

SPEAKER_05

There's gotta be, by the way, like we gotta come up with a system for that.

SPEAKER_06

Like, it's gotta be like you need like a baggy stuck to the or like a well, we ended up doing Velcro because I I had some with me. And I'm like, we're adding this. Like, how is it not in there? They had the power thing tied to it, and I'm like, why would you not figure out like we need the remote? These TVs these days, if you ever get stuck, that's why I'm bringing it up. Yeah, you have to have a remote. Yeah, you can't access some of the things without it. Right. It's just a power button. Right. That's it. It's crazy. I can't believe they've gone to that method. So, anyways, um, there's that. I'm gonna insert a video of right now, while you're watching this, of my experience with it. Now, the other thing I didn't know how this was gonna work out the song requests. Right. Even with a small crowd. Small crowd. Yeah, it was pretty cool because you can set parameters.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_06

So I knew exactly my guest count.

SPEAKER_05

Hold on one second before you get out there. What what was the metric or what's the was there a different QR code like on your laptop for the song requests?

SPEAKER_06

Or yes. Okay. No, no, no, no. Same, same QR code. Oh, so once they're in there, they can either add a photo or add a song. Gotcha. Okay, okay, okay, okay. So they're all in one spot.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, gotcha.

SPEAKER_06

For me, I'm logged into the app. That's right. Not the app, I'm sorry, the website on my phone. Sure. And these things I don't have to refresh. Right. It populates itself in real time. Now, I'm like, I don't want to get slammed with a hundred more requests after I already have a pretty decent list from the couple. From the couple. Right. So I could set parameters. So I could say, how many total songs do I want this thing to give me? Yeah. So I pick 35.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

How many can each person give you? One. Yeah. I put nice. Yeah. So I everybody can be a part of

QR Song Requests With Guardrails

SPEAKER_06

it, but once they submit it, that's it. Right. So here's a picture of what this looks like when it's populated in. It kind of comes like this. Now I did message uh CP about this because I thought this was uh gonna be a golden thing that he doesn't have. I would love to have been able to say on this comment to this lady and say, Hey, your song came up next. It's coming up next. Oh, that's cool. Yeah, you know what I mean? Yeah. Whether that's pinging them via you know, through the push notification or something. Yeah. It did have that. And apparently with some Apple update, it isn't working currently. Oh, they're gonna fix that. He said by Tuesday of this week. Nice. I only got two song requests. Yeah. So I played, I mean, and these weren't ones that were on my list of from the couple that I played, I think it was All American Girl or whatever by um Carrie Underwood, and then Air Force ones I played later. But you can say, you know, you can check it off your list in the queue. Sure.

SPEAKER_05

It was cool, dude. I I know that um I think Rich, there's only one or two of my guys that will do school dances, and I believe he uses this for just the song request feature at the school dances. Right. You can't do a school dance. I don't give a shit if it's high school, eighth grade, sixth grade without something like this. I agree. They will eat you alive. Yeah, they will they will bug you so bad that you can't even mix.

SPEAKER_06

Now, you can even in the instructions. And all these kids have a phone. Right. I was gonna say, you don't want, because they can't write. You don't want them putting a pad out there and saying, that's what we used to do. I used to do too.

SPEAKER_05

I could read that half. I could read anything. They would fill up a legal pad, run back. The whole pad.

SPEAKER_06

I'm like, bro, what the letter is stupid, dude. And that helps too at some point because people don't want to write it all down. So it kind of can help. This might be too easy for them. But I will say, uh, you're able to put instructions here for them. So when they're about to submit one, it says, hey, uh, something like, uh, thanks for your uh you definitely submit a request. However, based on the preference and the vision for the Brian Groom, I may or may not get to it. Right, right. Doesn't mean I don't like you and that you don't have good taste. Yeah, it just doesn't work for today's event. Oh, something like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Nice, tame. But I don't want to then feel like it's next. Does it have an upvote feature like where I wish you didn't even see it? Well, the way I the tie-in I was gonna tell Vibo about was like it would be cool if I could upload what has already been requested. Oh. So it's already in there. So Vibo tie in with STAR. I think they should do that because that way I'm or whatever request platform you want. Like if you could do it from, I know you just use um Spotify, yeah, but if you could upload that Spotify playlist into this so that they're not requesting the same song. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, that would be cool. So that that way you don't get it three times.

SPEAKER_05

That's what I get from the couples, right? Spotify list.

SPEAKER_06

Anyway, I think for the mid-level market, this is incredible.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

I think I couldn't use this probably for the super high end because they want you to specialize. They don't want me to be doing video, they don't want me doing all this stuff. They just want me to DJ and focus on that. So I don't know if I can tie this into that world necessarily, but for all of our mid-level clients, now the other thing is you get to have a car that has a TV that you can fit in there. Um, you need a stand to put it on. You I mean, there's other investments that you're gonna have to make, but if you already have those things and it's just sitting in the warehouse, this is a way to make some money, I think, for yourself. And I'm gonna give it one more shot in August with another couple, again, a freebie. Yep. Just to work out some more kinks.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, and then get content.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, make sure it works.

SPEAKER_05

Right. And then start selling it.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

In the fall.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Yeah. So if you're not using how many TVs do you have total? Three. Down in Florida. Three total. Yeah. 75s? No. One's a 75, the other two are 50s. But I I knew this room needed it. So I was just gonna do it. Right on.

SPEAKER_05

If you've ever tried to clean up your DJ setup and thought there's gotta be a better way to mount this, yeah, there is now. Parts four DJs is the new home for all of our custom 3D printed parts. Stuff designed specifically to make your setup cleaner, tighter, and more professional. Cable management, mounts, little fixes that make a big difference. We moved everything off the Bungear site so it has its own home now. Go check it out at Partsthenumber 4DJs.com. What's it the off the record segment?

SPEAKER_01

Um, off the record, let me talk my sugar on the icy. They throw a shade while I'm sippin' on this ice tea. Don't care if you hate on it like me. You know why, cause that's just how I see me. I'm gonna say what I want to say.

SPEAKER_06

All right, dude. You flew with me this last two weeks ago. Yeah. Upon this recording time. This is driving me nuts, man. We have a layover somewhere. Where do they drop me off? The furthest gate. A1. And you had to go to A69. Sometimes too. Why do they keep doing it? I don't know. Am I just getting unlucky? Every flight is like that. I'm like, bro, I'm not trying to run a marathon here. Like, what are you doing? I'm not in training. Me and you. We were huffing it. We were huffing it. Right? And this happens all the time. I'm like, you're telling me there's no gates in the middle. Like, I'm not saying I gotta be right next to the tram, but don't put me at the end. You know what I mean? It doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_05

I know how we made that flight, dude. We were hauling ass in that Atlanta airport on the way home.

SPEAKER_06

Well, what's worse was I get the notification that, you know, what gate you're at. I would go all the way down there, and they

Airport Pain And Social Media Burnout

SPEAKER_06

had moved the gate to another terminal. After already walking all the way yesterday. Yeah. No way. So then I had to, I go, wait, this says Minneapolis. Why am I going to Minneapolis? And I look and I'm like, oh my gosh, it's at C. You had to go. This is Atlanta. Atlanta. I had to go to another terminal. Jesus Christ. And they're bored in group three. I'm group one. I'm pissed. You're mad. Yeah, I'm just like, I would admit it, but like, we gotta do better airports. I mean, this is this this routing is just awful. Not not a fan. Not a fan. All right, so do you got anything? Man, I don't.

SPEAKER_05

I I just if you were not a DJ, let's just say you had a corporate job.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Do you think you would post on social media? I don't as a DJ. So for me, probably not.

SPEAKER_06

Okay, do you think you would have it at all? I I I looked forward to the day I don't have to. Me too. I honestly do.

SPEAKER_05

And maybe that maybe people are like, what a fucking boomer. But call me a boomer, dude. Like I I mean, I like to watch other people's.

SPEAKER_06

I just don't like the pressure of having to feel like I have to post.

SPEAKER_05

I don't even know if I like to watch other people's anymore. Really? I like to do that. I d I don't know if I'm doing it just f out of sheer habit. I don't know if I'm doing it out of trying to find inspiration. I don't know, man. It's it's it's very frustrating, all of it. Because I I'm I make plat I make three different types of videos for three entirely different a week? No, I mean I make a hundred a week. I mean like a hundred a week. I mean, that's exaggerative, but I mean I make ten or fifteen. Okay. I mean, and it's in like when he comes over, he'll be like, I'll go, hey man, can you shoot this week? Yep. What time? Uh let's see Wednesday at eight, ten o'clock, right? Yeah. He's usually here two hours. And I'll have a list on my phone. Okay, we need to make three ads for Bungear. We need to make three ads for EventSync. We need to make a long form video on my new DJ booth. We need to make an uh an ad for the podcast. We need to shoot 10 reels for DJs. We need to shoot 12 TikToks for couples. Like and even this weekend, like we have a content create creator coming out. I got permission from the bride. Like, all the stuff that she shoots will be for couples getting married. So is the frustration the money or the fact that it's just the grind and the fact that nothing really pops.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah, that's frustrating.

SPEAKER_05

I mean, if Jenna is about to hit 100K, I'm pretty sure we started our channels at the same time. I think I've been at 21,000 for months. Yeah. Months on YouTube. Yeah. I've been at 21,000 for for a year on Instagram. What do you think? Is the titles or I I dude, I don't know. I don't know if it's just like there's not enough controversy. I don't know if I'm not very good at telling the story. I I mean, you know, it's just it's basically just pick up the camera and start shooting when we get to these shows. Yeah. The gear reviews do okay. But it's niche, though. I mean, we're in a it's super niche. Yeah. But I mean, you know, clearly. Spinelli's blown that out of the water. Even Aaron Strong, yeah. E200K. Like, I I just feel like I'm stagnant on all platforms, and it's super frustrating. I don't know. Does anybody even give a shit if I post? Like, throw it in the comments. Like, I don't. I mean, I I really like have gotten to the point where I I think I'm just the long form is coming to an end for me. And just I that's why I built out that new DJ booth. It's like everything is just short quit. Short quit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

People have no attention span. I get it. Nothing. Even the marketing stuff I used to do. Remember those like documentary stuff videos? Yeah. Even the one with the car that we cut up and stuff. TLDR. People ain't people. Yeah. D L D W. T L D W. I ain't watching it. Too long didn't watch. What's it the gear corner? I don't know. Does anybody give a fuck? Uh gear corner. Okay. The gear's here. The gear. Is here. Is here. Is here. Is here. Is here. Is here.

SPEAKER_06

Talk to me. So I sent you a list because you're about to go internationally. You have already been back by this point. I'll be back. Yeah. But you've ordered some things already. I blew it up. One of the ones. By the way, that list, tell them about where it is. I got it next. I got it next. Okay, my boy. So this is uh I saw that I ordered it. This is clutch because usually these ones are about this thick, which is about a double.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

This is a single. Yep. Um, but what I love about it, look at the the the fast chargings. Okay. You got two fast chargings. You got USB A and USB-C fast charging, two of them.

SPEAKER_05

International style.

SPEAKER_06

International style. But it could be used domestically too.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, I see that.

SPEAKER_06

Because if you uh just hit that little clip there, comes in. So it's not just international. That's what I think is super important to have a little bit of both. Wait, how do you get those out? Oh, yeah, the bottom, the little lip. There's like a little um, yep, there you go, buddy. This is really smart, isn't it? And then I didn't bring it, but it comes with a satchel. You love a satchel.

SPEAKER_05

I love a satchel.

SPEAKER_06

So yeah. This does cover Tokyo, right? It does. And Australia. All every country. That's what I love about

Travel Gear Picks And The Back Room

SPEAKER_06

it. Is it's all all.

SPEAKER_05

So there's basically in the whole world, you're saying there are these three types of plugs.

SPEAKER_06

That's it.

SPEAKER_05

These kind of turned-in ones, yeah. Ours, and then these meaty ones.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Interesting.

SPEAKER_06

Um, Amazon.com. We can get those. So speaking of, I made this. How much was this? That's a great question. I don't know the answer to, unfortunately. I usually do, and I didn't bring it back.

SPEAKER_05

40 watt charger. Okay.

SPEAKER_06

So I made a whole list for you. Yeah. Gave it to the Patreon community. Yeah, you did. So if you go to the next slide here, um, you'll see it here. It says Brian B's International Trip Travel Essentials. Made a whole document. Yeah, you did. Clickable links. Yeah. Gave it to the Patreon. So if you want it, get on the Patreon. Patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. And I don't think it has to be just for international trips.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, we're not going to show it on here. You think we're stupid. I know y'all trying to clip it. Title slide. Some asshole clip it and share it with the whole world. This is curated by Brian B. It's been all over the world. Yeah.

SPEAKER_06

Plus my affiliate line.

SPEAKER_05

I never even left the damn city and I'm going to Tokyo and Australia or R B B. Plus my affiliate link has not been doing well.

SPEAKER_06

I haven't been pushing in another. Well, it's about to blow up. But they're all good stuff. Stuff that you may or may not have thought of. I did order these. Yeah, those are good. You need at least one or two. I got two. Hey, real quick, Joe, should we explain the back room or just let people figure it out? I think we should explain. All right. It's our Patreon. We call it the back room, a community for you, our listeners, the booth heads. And if you're not in there, you are missing a ton of stuff.

SPEAKER_05

Things like bonus episodes, exclusively recorded monthly for backroom members. Plus the tracks that we pull that actually work for the events when we play them and when you play them. Early bashed episodes. Giveaways. Look, we have the good stuff there, not junk. We're not going to email you some sticker.

SPEAKER_06

And it's $19.99 a month. For now.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, for now. Go to patreon.com beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Again, patreon.com slash Beyond the DJ Booth Podcast.

SPEAKER_06

Join us and our booth head community in the back room. Uh question of the day. Okay. Question of the day. Alan, all day. I love Alan all day. If you had to start completely from scratch today, oh my goodness. No content, no reviews, no network, no reputation. What would your first priority be for rebuilding your DJ business? These are good questions, man. It is a good question. From the Patreon. It's priority. Got the push. First priority.

SPEAKER_05

What's yours? Do you have it?

SPEAKER_06

Uh first priority for me would be that's a great question, actually. Um I mean, I assume you're good, right? I mean, that's I'm guessing that that's that's not saying in there. So um I would probably want to get some free shows under my belt with some some some referring sources. That's just what I would do right off the bat, you know, probably go over to a venue, see if they're hosting anything that they need a DJ for, just to get my name in the door.

SPEAKER_05

Ironically, I was gonna say the same thing. I I'm I'm building the network first. Right. The network as in going out there and meeting people in the space. So either that or join an association or start my own, or um do a

Rebuilding A DJ Business From Zero

SPEAKER_05

wedding show, even if I had to do the ones at the paragraphs, because I know that there's gonna be 200 vendors at it.

SPEAKER_06

Um I also think you could use your own Facebook, your your primary one. Obviously, start a business one at some point, but the first one you should do is your personal and be, or Instagram, whatever, whatever you have the bigger platform on, and just say, hey, start a new business. I would if you any of you would love you know, need some DJ service, I'd love to be able to be considered something like that. And you know, your friends typically want to help you out, typically, you know, yeah, and I think that that could get you some shows immediately. I mean, that'd be great.

SPEAKER_05

I mean, my my very first thing was uh you gotta get out there in front of people, man. Real people. I I mean the the reviews are gonna come when the shows, the you know, the reputation is gonna come with the shows, the content's gonna come with the shows, but like it you you until you get out there and put yourself in front of real people and the people that are making business decisions or recommending DJs or brides that are looking for you know a DJ for their uh their wedding, you're just you're nowhere, man. And I know everything now is digital and AI this and Zoom that and but the the the human uh interaction, the relationship, the coffee meeting, the the um lunch, you know, the whatever, that shit still matters, man. And if you don't believe it, I mean I was as somebody was a fly on the wall at Brian's show, you know, two weeks ago. Like I I can tell, like he has curated these relationships, whether it was at Engage or doing the you know the Planner Sisters wedding for you know a deeply discounted rate or whatever, like there is a huge value in getting out there and starting your network. That that if I'm if you're looking for the my answer, it's pretty much the same as Brian's. Like you got to get out there in front of these people.

SPEAKER_03

Yep.

SPEAKER_05

Hope that helps, Alan. Thanks for being a Patreon member. Didn't they come through Patreon? I did. So um, so we're gonna go ahead and wrap this one, y'all. This is Beyond the DJ Booth. We are sponsored by DJ Event Planner. It's our favorite CRM where we keep track of all of our leads and shows. They're at DJEventplanner.com. So go check them out. We'll see you guys next week. Later
