Every DJ has songs, transitions, and little tricks they keep coming back to because they simply work. In this episode, we're sharing what's consistently working for us right now at weddings, corporate events, and private parties: from current dance floor tracks to dinner music, walk-in playlists, and programming strategies that are getting real-world results.
We kick things off, however, with a fun challenge that turns into a conversation about instincts, pattern recognition, and why trusting your ears matters behind the booth.
We also drop a DJC Recharge (the event we both throw with Jason Jani in Raleigh this November 16–18), announcement of a speaker we're excited to welcome back to the DJC stage. Tom Gambuzza from EMG joins the lineup to teach the long game of building a healthier DJ business through financial discipline, leadership, hiring, cash flow management, and making decisions that position your company for long-term success.
From there, we dive into Annie's Playlist, sharing tracks and edits we're actually using at gigs right now, plus why certain songs are connecting, how long we're letting them play, and ways to keep energy moving without overstaying a moment.
We also swap stories from recent events, including adapting to challenging room layouts, returning to DJ for repeat families with sky-high expectations, and a growing issue facing event DJs as more venues crack down on CO₂ cannons. Finally, we answer a listener question about creativity and how to make room for it when your calendar is packed.
If you're looking for practical ideas you can take to your next event, this episode is full of them.

Welcome And Nelly Drum Game
SPEAKER_01What's up, everybody? Welcome back to another uh episode, another edition of the private event DJ podcast. Beyond the DJ booth.
SPEAKER_02Beyond the DJ booth. If you're just listening, he's knocking on our branding sign, right?
SPEAKER_01That thing's six months old now. He's brand new. I am Joe Bund. And I'm Brian B. Yes. Let's get it going.
SPEAKER_02So uh I thought we would uh start off with a little fun callback. The little can you find the one? Little drum edition. You love this game. Drums only. Oh yeah, this is impossible. But I feel like this I've I've set you up perfectly for this. Okay.
SPEAKER_00This is uh all Nelly tracks. I saw this. Somebody made this video the other day. Yeah? Who was this?
SPEAKER_01Uh I don't know. So did you get it? I didn't watch the whole thing. Okay. So you probably know who was. You know Chris Cruz?
SPEAKER_02Chris Cruz. Yeah, you know that guy? Okay. I don't.
SPEAKER_01He's a good dude. He's a good dude.
SPEAKER_02So you might want to put on some headphones. We're gonna see if you can get these. I I mean Nelly's pretty Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_01I I feel more confident than last time. Okay. So we'll play a little bit more. Other listeners were saying that they had trouble with it last time as well.
SPEAKER_02Okay. All right. Didn't they?
SPEAKER_01Like Trago. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I got 10 of them. They're going quick. Okay. It's not gonna be too crazy, but go ahead. Uh let's hit the first one.
SPEAKER_01I'm going down to baby. What's the name of the track? Um Country Grammar. All right, let's see it. That's right.
SPEAKER_02All right, one for one. Pretty easy. Yeah. Number two. Uh.
SPEAKER_07And I'm running with bad boys. I'm running with bad boys. That's it. Alright, we'll hit it. Let's just hit it.
SPEAKER_01What your name is.
SPEAKER_02Shake your tail, fella. Oh, yeah. Shake your tail fellow. Okay. It's a weird title for. Did they even say that in the draft? One time. One time, it's it. Yep. Okay. Number three.
SPEAKER_07Uh-uh.
SPEAKER_01That sounds like your jammer. I think it's EI. E. I. There you go. Okay, you got it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02EI, EI. Uh oh. Okay. Alright, this one's gonna be a little trickier, I think.
SPEAKER_01Oh. Uh oh. Drop down and get your eagle alone, girl. Drop down and get your eagle on girl. Drop down and get your eagle alone, girl. Flap your wings. Oh, flap your wings. Because the girls used to drop down like that. You play that one, Phil? No, I'm not opposed to bringing it back. Girls used to get nasty to that shit. Oh, you're four for four. Shh. This is your era, though. It is. And I have a real soft spot for Nelly. I love Nelly. Go for it. Oh, is it just ride with me?
SPEAKER_00Ride with me, yeah. That's it. Well done. Five for five. All right. Oh, hot and her.
SPEAKER_02Alright, we're gonna get a little bit trickier. Let's see if we get this one.
SPEAKER_07Oh, boom boom, boom. Um it's grills. Grills!
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Come on. Let you see my wife.
SPEAKER_02Alright, now these next three are gonna be the harder ones. Last three. I couldn't leave it too easy.
SPEAKER_01I don't know it. Hit it. Oh shit. A little dilemma. Yeah, that's tough. Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00You play that one? That one you can be playing. Yeah, yeah. I think I brought that back before. I think you told me to bring it back. Yes. The big one. All right. How about this one? This one might be another toughie.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02Is it the one with Tim McGraw? No. You got any guesses, uh, sick one? And I don't know if I can hear it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's yeah, it got hard.
SPEAKER_05Pimp juice.
SPEAKER_01Pimp juice! Oh shit. I forgot about pimp juice.
SPEAKER_02All right. Pimp juice. It did well for a lot.
SPEAKER_01It did okay for a minute. All right, this one's too good.
SPEAKER_06Damn. Try it again.
SPEAKER_01That be crazy. No? Nope. What do you think?
SPEAKER_06The Air Force One?
SPEAKER_01No. You didn't. I I can't believe it. Oh, number one. Number one. Okay. Close, that one in it. I used to play this.
unknownNobody remembers.
SPEAKER_01Seven out of ten. It was faster.
SPEAKER_02I figured if I give you A Force ones, it was gonna be too easy. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Now they had his.
SPEAKER_02He did, right? He's actually on tour, I think, right now as well. I I saw him, he was on with somebody.
SPEAKER_06I saw him last year, wasn't he?
SPEAKER_02Was it last year or two years?
SPEAKER_01Uh two years ago we went right two summers ago? Yeah. Who was he with?
SPEAKER_06Rule.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Ya Rule. Yeah. The baby.
SPEAKER_01I could see that.
SPEAKER_02That'd be a good man.
SPEAKER_06No, that was a different show.
SPEAKER_01No, that was a different show. That was with you.
SPEAKER_06Oh, he came with Chingy. Oh, yeah. Chingy.
SPEAKER_01He was with Nelly? Yeah. Wow. He was the opener, and then it was Nellie and who was the headliner?
SPEAKER_06Nellie was the headliner. Oh, okay. He has uh Spud.
SPEAKER_02His whole crew up there. I mean, he's got enough hits to last uh headlining show. Absolutely. Well, good. Seven out of ten. I think you're getting better at this stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that adapter's cooked.
SPEAKER_02Um, let's talk a little bit about DJ Collective. We've been dropping announcements every episode. We got a speaker announcement today. You want to hit the intro of who this is?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure, man. Um, the DJ Collective, if you don't know, is a uh DJ experience, a conference, if you will, that myself and Brian and Jason have been doing for many years now. We are back in Raleigh, North Carolina, November 16th through the 18th. And we'd love to have you here. Uh we're we're selling tickets now. Uh people are gonna be rushing at the end to get in, so do not get left out. We're capping it at a hundred people. We've sold over half those tickets already. So uh the speaker announcement, yeah, uh my buddy Tom Gambuza from up at uh EMG up in New Jersey, right? New Jersey. And um he sent in his topic. It's called the long game financial and leadership decisions that shape the long-term health of a DJ business. I'll just tell you this this dude and and the guys that that own EMG are probably like in your category of smart people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01They are like I I don't put myself in the same realm as as like Brian and and Tom and the guys over at EMG. I'm telling you, this is a not to be missed uh topic. I mean, he's very, very smart, uh, very, very
DJ Collective Speaker Announcement
SPEAKER_01business driven, business focused. There's no way that you leave um, what are we giving him? Is it 30, 45 minutes or something? Something like that. There's no way you leave this session without some truly notable takeaway to take back to your your business itself.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh I think it's gonna cover everything from like pricing pressure to um how you reinvest your profit stuff to hiring people. So if you're a multi-op, but this is also gonna apply to single ops too, because he's talking about cash flow discipline, um, and even just that whole tension between like growth and being stable. Yeah, it's really kind of taking the creative DJ hat off and putting the CEO hat on, which I think is hard to do. It is hard to do. And these are the kind of cool topics that I feel like aren't these are the things that are like tangible takeaways that you're gonna take, and it'll be transformative, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_01So creatives aren't usually good with business and money. So I think this is gonna help tremendously.
SPEAKER_02It's gonna be good. So if you're not familiar with Tom, he doesn't speak at a lot of the different conferences, but he's been on the DJ's Volta bunch. Yep. And good friend of mine, too. Um, he spoke at one of the DJ Collectives a while back. I think he and his crew. Yeah. So hopefully we'll see you there. Uh give your tickets now before uh they go up. November.
SPEAKER_01DJ CollectiveOfficial.com. When do they go back up again? It's a great question. I don't know. Okay. Um well they every every few months they bump up.
SPEAKER_02So get the ticket now. While you can. Uh let's move into some more music. Okay. You ready? Annie's playlist. Let's hit it.
SPEAKER_04Annie, I wanna know. What's on your playlist, Danny? I wanna know. I wanna know. Hey Annie, I wanna know. What's on your playlist, Danny? I wanna know. I wanna know.
SPEAKER_02So Annie's playlist for those that haven't checked this out before, this is songs that I'm currently playing out that I've downloaded that I like that Annie's like, put it on repeat. Put it on repeat. Tell Annie, tell them who Annie is again. Oh, so yeah, sorry. I forgot to mention that. She's my uh now six-year-old, right? Six-year-old daughter. So uh yeah, she's she's up on the music sesh. So these songs have been playing really well for me out at the gigs, and I thought that we would uh just talk some of these through. And if you don't have them in your library, they might show up potentially in some bonus content potentially. Patreon, Patreon. There we go. So uh the first one here, I've been doing a lot of corporate shows and uh so walk-in music for whatever, and I think you can get away with some of the more danceable songs, but if they're presented in a non-dancing way. So this is Feel So Close, Calvin Harris, the track.
Annie’s Playlist For Corporate Walk-Ins
SPEAKER_02Uh, this is the Les Bisos, B-I-S-O-U-S. Okay. I'm probably butchering that, but uh, it's kind of a disco-y version of it. Okay. Played it. Again, imagine people you're setting anticipation for people going into a conference.
SPEAKER_01I love this. This is one of my favorite songs anyway.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I'm not trying to give them a dance, I'm just getting them to be in a happy mood. 8 a.m. You gotta go to a conference. I don't want to be doing that. Right.
unknownThere's no stopping us right now.
SPEAKER_01I feel it.
SPEAKER_02Good shit, good shit. Quick in and out. And then another one along the same lines poker face, little lady gaga. This is the uh Rocky R-A-W-K-E-Y edit. Again, similar kind of vibe. A little punched up on the tempo. Again, the kind of disco-y house. Had people singing, eight in the morning. Again, it wasn't Lady Gaga, though.
SPEAKER_01It's like a re re recorded.
SPEAKER_02It's got somebody else, I think it's another sample on top of it, but I think that's her original vocal.
SPEAKER_01Did you know that even on the radio version that they slid in, it's saying fuck fuck her face? Oh, I didn't know that. Yeah. On the radio. Swear it. Wow. All right. Yeah. It must be high. I promise my research. We do a little research. I'm I they slid in like it's pupper, but it's saying fuck her face. Wow. Wow. I think they slid it in.
SPEAKER_06Shout out, Lady Gaga.
SPEAKER_01Lady Gaga.
SPEAKER_06I was when she was.
SPEAKER_02Shout out my man Goosey. That's when she was trying to be hard. Trying to be hard with her. I guess. You know, trying to be nasty. Yeah. Uh, so I'm gonna play you a dinner track. It's been working for me. I've been playing a lot of Livia Dean lately. But this is a cool flip. This is with uh a little Ush Ush. Usher, uh little this is the song Dive, but this is the Brie edit. And uh I usually play it, the original, and then go into this edit the last chorus. Just fixing during dinner. Oh, got to be. Got to be that 10,000.
SPEAKER_04Maybe it's the magic in the world.
SPEAKER_02And then it kind of has like a Caribbean beat here when it kicks in.
SPEAKER_04Oh god. Yes.
SPEAKER_02I get so many people coming up to me.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, this does all.
SPEAKER_02They're like, who is this? What is this? I get so many compliments playing that.
SPEAKER_01You're never gonna find that. This ain't on Spotify bitch. Totally. Karen from HR, go sit your ass down. Oh Brian B.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. Um, so TikTok tracks trending crazy. This was one of my biggest songs of the night uh at the engaged conference. I did the welcome party. Uh, this is the Melissa I'm Drunk track. Have you heard this one?
SPEAKER_01You were trying to tell me about it. I don't I'm not dialed in on the lore of the song.
SPEAKER_02Okay, so it was an AI track originally. Afroplugs was the name of the AI creator. Okay. Who knows? I don't know who this person is. Uh, and then uh Ahsoka uh actual artist, Jay Baptist or Baptiste, I don't know. Yeah, he he re-released it and put Ahsoka beat behind it. It's not much of a difference. I go in from this usually into like um I mean you can go into a bunch of different Latin stuff, but I I usually go into uh Lionel Richie all night long. I've got a cool edit that goes into that. But this one, I mean, those tracks are doing really well for me. And uh here it is if you're not familiar with it. Sounds like hot haunted It's just that hook people go crazy because there's like people are doing they're making up their own videos for this stuff, right? Like people who's just drunken and they're just you know crazy dancing or whatever.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, like I I can see the transition into all night long.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, oh yeah, me too. Totally. So the key you're gonna play. Go ahead. Oh, I was gonna say the key is you know, you gotta be in and out of those tracks. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And you gotta know where you're going fast. Right. Yeah, you don't want to be playing it for two minutes. No, no, no. If you can play the hook out and know where you're going, those songs can work really well.
SPEAKER_01I have a feeling you're gonna play that Puerto Rico song at some point.
SPEAKER_02No, I'm not. I'm also gonna do it on this one. Okay. So the last uh one here I got for you is Dynamite. It's the Tayo Cruz, but this is the uh clutch Love is a Drug Drop with the uh Armin Van Buren. I've been playing this a lot for like after parties to kick it off. A little familiarity and then it goes a little harder. Energy. Yeah, yeah. So here it is.
SPEAKER_01Grandma's card is like But it's not so aggressive where you're just like, you know, I'm gonna be on Molly to get through whatever.
SPEAKER_02Like a trap drop or whatever. It it's just a good, like hard beat that gets into more housey or whatever you want to go with it. You know what I mean? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And the and the you signify or signal that, all right, the you know, party with the adults is over, it's after party. Yes, totally. Yeah. I mean, you could play it for a reception, of course. I still think you could get away with it during a just a traditional reception. Right. After party sounds crazy. Yeah. Because if I heard that as the first track, I'd be like, oh, I'm staying. Yes, totally. I've given you all my energy during the party. I'm not staying. I just want a slider. And I think a slider with some ketchup.
SPEAKER_02And slider. Late night he eats. Late night he eats. Well, little whataburger. You know what I mean? Um, all right, let's uh move on. Oh, so those tracks will be uh maybe on the Patreon. Nice. We'll just put those on there. Let's get into story time. Some gigs. Let's hear about some gigs. You had a couple, you had a do a dub, a little double? A dubski?
SPEAKER_01Um, I did. So I've been playing for Elon University, which is about an hour from here in Elon, North Carolina, near Greensboro, for years. And I we've done stuff for their employees at holiday time. We have done um things for the students, like Meet the President, like the day before the last day of classes, where it's just literally background music and everybody gets, you know, is one-on-one taking a picture with the president of the university or the college. This thing is the last day that employees are required to be on campus. And by employees, these are primarily what professors? Um everybody. Janitorial to the president. Oh, okay. Like everybody's every coach, uh, every coach, every every teacher, every professor, every I mean everybody. But not like 20 steps. Everybody. These are like 40s. It would be I mean, whatever the earliest probably um, you know, associate professors, probably in their 30s up to, you know, getting ready to retire. Some people, you know, they shout out the people that have been there, whatever, 30 years, 25 years, 20 years. And it's in the basketball stadium, which is a I mean, this Elon is state of the art. But I mean, is that sound usually basketball?
Double-Header Day And Room Layout Fixes
SPEAKER_02It sounds terrible. Yeah, it sounds terrible.
SPEAKER_01And I'm dialed into basically like the the PA, but I mean, imagine a new basketball stadium. Okay, so it's not terrible. Yeah, but it's again, man, it's it starts at I think I started at 8 a.m. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. This is an award show. Kinda like a presentation. So I was thinking this is all dancing. This is no, no, no. It was eight in the morning. That's how I was able to make it to the wedding later. Double meaning two in one day.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Bro, I haven't done that since I was like 15.
SPEAKER_01No, it was not pleasant. The only positive was there's an uh a newish hotel on the campus called the Elon Inn, the Inn at Elon. And I always stay there the night before. Okay. So, and I didn't have to load in gear. To the wedding. To the thing, got it.
SPEAKER_02You're just bringing a controller at DJ booth. Brought the booth.
SPEAKER_01That's it. Patched into this the stadium sound, had a sound guy there, blah, blah, blah.
SPEAKER_02Wow, eight in the morning, so you gotta be.
SPEAKER_01So I packed put the booth in the car, drove for about an hour, got some lunch, made sure that I was near Fuquay Vareno, which was, I don't know, an hour and a half away. Okay. For the Donovan Manor wedding. And how was that one? Uh and then Saquon met me at that one, and it was great, man. From what I remember, I mean, it went off. You don't need the button? Um, no, definitely no, definitely no. Okay. Um she was gorgeous, he was gorgeous, family was great, they loved us. That was the one I think the the table mover.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We were like way off from the dance floor. And then like, we already we knew like the t it wasn't gonna work. There was like tables in front of us. Uh and then the dance floor was like way over to the to the left, to the left. And so then people start dancing, and then you can see the bride just looking around, like she was going on.
SPEAKER_01And then I'm panicking, like, am I doing something wrong? And she was like, she comes over me and she's like, we gotta move these tables. And I'm like, I agree, they're terrible. And she starts grabbing tables herself, swear to god like she was like the staff was taking too long. She's literally like moving tables out of the way, and then she was like, I got it on video. So they didn't have like a real dance floor, or they did, or it was more of an area.
SPEAKER_06It was just uh it was just like an area.
SPEAKER_02And you're there, I feel like all the time. All the time. And they always put you, baby, in the corner? It wasn't the corner, man. Okay. I don't know how to say it. This is the first time they've done this to you? Nope. Oh, they've been doing it to you. Yeah. It's where you are. So it's like the venue's dictating and unnecessarily the planner.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01I don't know, man. I mean 'cause the planner usually here dictates the layout. Right. But the the sweetheart table is in front of these picturesque windows. Or either the head table. And so that's where you ideally want to be. Yeah. That's where I want to be. Yeah. And we won't do it. That's not where we are. Yeah. Ever. Yeah. We're on this wall, and that wall happens to be basically behind, you know, these giant round tables. And she got that shit out of the way. And then I basically get on the mic and I was like, move from there to here. And then we moved the whole thing. And then it went off. That's great. It was good. It was a great standout tracks, any moments that were um I sent you that list today. Um, I'm trying to remember. Hold on, give me one second. I'll pull up the notes from this morning. I was going back through these uh lists, see if see if I've got it here. I was just thinking through this. Uh I've started I've I've you know what I've replaced lately is I I never liked Sweet Caroline. And when I did play it, it was Scooter Edit, but I've replaced it with that too, French.
SPEAKER_02Oh, it works great. It works great. Yeah. Even though I played it one time here and you were kind of like iffy on it on it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you were like, I don't know. I I'm usually a purist on songs like that, but I hate that song so bad, I'm allowing it. Um I do remember playing higher um Creed Creed. Scooters got this 2025 version epic intro. And then I went into crazy train because it was on the must-play. Wow. And they do something where they like chug beers. Right? Remember, she goes, Hold on, start it over. I need to go get a beer. Really? Yeah. And I think it goes, ha ha ha. Boom. Yeah, yeah. And she was just like, Wait, I need a beer. And like sprinted to the bar. Like I just remember like never playing that really, and it just went off. Yeah. Right.
SPEAKER_02Was it something with their where they went to school? I think probably.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Family thing.
SPEAKER_01I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Cool. Who knows?
SPEAKER_01Anyway, what did what about you?
SPEAKER_02Uh man, I had a wedding. Uh yeah, I've been on tour. We can talk about that on another episode. But I did a wedding uh in Pensacola, Florida, where suppose. Yeah, I'm I'm not a big fan of the name. I don't know where they got it from. Go ahead. The venue. Um, so it's one I don't play at very often. It's kind of one of those ones that's a pay-to-play? Uh no, no, no. Definitely not. But it's one that's like, I feel like they they try to make it look luxury, but it's not. It's like a lot of fake. I'm not gonna say the one here. You know what I mean? We got one of those.
SPEAKER_01We got one, yeah. So it has like Greek statues with dicks on them and stuff. I'm like, why do I want to look at a dick while I'm DJing?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So they got like this stage, and then on either side of the stage, they have these massive planters that like to for one person to move, it's impossible. Well, you're fake.
SPEAKER_00They're those are real because those things are heavy, bro.
SPEAKER_01No, I mean the plant, the plant inside.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, it's yeah, but the actual planter itself, planter, yeah, yeah, yeah, is like cement. I mean, it's like massive. It's not going anywhere. You know, yeah, and it's tricky because the it's not enough space. They put the dance floor like right next to it. So then you have to move them to be able to put a speaker there because I'm like, otherwise, I'm it's gonna be way on the outside of the thing. You know what I mean? So it's just I don't have a picture of it, unfortunately. But the thing about this wedding was I did the sister's wedding.
Repeat Family Wedding Pressure Reality
SPEAKER_02This is now the brother's wedding, maybe two years ago. And I was kind of in my head about like, I don't want to play the same stuff I played. Oh Lord. And and then I'm like, wait a minute, it was two years ago.
SPEAKER_01And there's a different set of guests and everything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, and that was the other thing is like I come in, the anticipation. I mean, they they wanted me to do it. That's why I'm at this venue because they had me before. So second time, and I don't get that very often either. And this uh mom was like, We're so excited, and I'm like, because she's like, we got top it from last time. That was the first, like, you know, and I'm like, all right, great, thanks for the pressure. Yeah, thanks. So um we start, and the bride, it just was one of those things where I learned I leaned into the fact that this bride's different than her than her brother, you know, than I'm sorry, than her sister, you know, or sister-in-law now, I guess. Sure. And they're not the same. So, like the mom was like, let's get to dancing right away. Like, they're just taking too long. And this the bride, who's not related to the to the mom of the groom, was like, Hey, I want to go on to all the tables and say hello. And they are taking their time. Meanwhile, guests are like, We're done eating, we're like ready to go. And I'm like playing this game of I don't want to rush them, but at the same time, it's like we are wasting time, and the natives are getting restless. You know what I mean? And so I start playing, it took off a little bit, but it just never hit the energy level of the brother. I'm sorry, the sister's wedding from two years ago. And inside, I'm just like, man, I hope they're not thinking about that last wedding. Right, right. It was just a completely different friend group. Yeah, yeah. Like the sister and the brother were years apart. Yeah, they weren't close. I mean, I mean, they were close, but I mean, not close in ages, and so it just was a different feel that wasn't gonna replicate that. Right. And their crowd was a lot younger than the sister's wedding, where they had like a lot, I was playing a lot more of uh retro stuff, and they had some retro people there, but it just didn't feel like that was the majority of what the crowd wanted and what the bride wanted. She wanted more newer stuff, so it's fighting that battle of like retro to new and just going back and forth. And I don't know, it was one of those gigs where you I felt like it wasn't as good as it could have been, and I think it was just more in my head than I needed to be, right? But I'm just putting it out there that sometimes those had those things happen, even though you had a crusher that from the family before, it doesn't always translate. And then I had a problem with the CO2. Uh-oh. So I said I brought it gratis, and I've been doing that a lot lately. Yeah, so I have it, might as well bring it. You know, if the party calls for it, makes for great pictures and video. Yeah, it does. Right. So I have it in there and uh tell the couple. This is the first time I've actually like, if they haven't ordered it, sometimes I don't even tell them. Now I tell them at dinner and then they kind of are anticipating it. Because I would tell them, because what's been happening is I haven't been telling them them. And they blow it all on the first song, it's all gone.
SPEAKER_01Right, right, right.
SPEAKER_02And I'm like, yo, I have this back here. You use like one or two blasts, I'll call you back later. Right. So we have more to use. Yeah. But if you use it all, done. I'm a cooker. You're a cooker? All in one song? I'm a cooker, yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, but you usually wait like till the end? Yeah, we stash it. We stash it.
SPEAKER_02I would do two usually. But the other thing was I didn't know how long this photographer was gonna be there. Uh-huh. And I was like, I gotta get this in before they leave. Sure. I just had a feeling that they're probably gonna leave a little early. Sure. So I tell them it's coming, and uh, they get up there, they do it, they have a blast doing it. And the other thing too is I noticed a lot of people shoot it like way in the air, and I'm like, no, do it over their heads, like right over the top of their heads, not like way up here. It's not gonna hurt people. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're not gonna like blind them. But not in their face, though. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So the venue, as soon as I they start spraying it, they finish and they come up to me and they're like, we can't have that. That's not allowed at this venue. And I'm like, what? CO2? I go,
CO2 Cannons And Venue Restrictions
SPEAKER_02this isn't haze, this isn't fog, it's not gonna set off the alarms.
SPEAKER_01We're getting it more and more now.
SPEAKER_02You getting that too?
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02So I I do the the chat to go, does this cause the alarms to go off? And they're like, 90% of the time, no, unless you're literally pointing it at the fire alarm. But that could be anything, it could be the flame from the fire of the of the candle, could be that. So I was just like, oh man. So maybe I need to check in with them these days. I mean, are you so are you are you just waiting for it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, at that point, yeah. I mean, we've had three, three or four people say it's banned here. Do not bring in. Really? Yep. Newt North Carolina Museum of Art, Market Hall downtown. The art thing makes sense. The art thing makes sense. The Umstead. The Umstead, yep. They say they have an art alarm and it'll set that off. Interesting. So it's just more sensitive. I don't know, bro. But it's becoming a problem.
SPEAKER_02And are you basically bringing it up, I guess, to clients ahead of time that, hey, I need to check first, or you're s because you sell it, right?
SPEAKER_01Uh no, I'm I I we do sell it, yes. It's a part of the top package, I think. Got it. So it comes up to the phone. For me, when I go Joe Bun, the Joe Bun experience, let's call it, yeah, I'm bringing it. Right. And I'm firing it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Unless you have a venue that I've got a band one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Got it. So the only the only solution at that point is take it outside for the exit. Have you ever had an alarm go off with that though? Never. Never once. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I feel like that's not the thing.
SPEAKER_01You know, I've never had an alarm go off, but I dude, I don't know, man. Yeah. I first time I ran into it. We we definitely usually fire it and ask for forgiveness later. Yeah. Unless we now like these places are being very specific, like banned. Interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That was the first time I ran into it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So that on top of the family stuff just made it like it wasn't a stinker. Right. But it was close. It was close. I know it was getting close. I almost grabbed it, but it wasn't that bad. Okay. So we all run into them.
SPEAKER_01I need to make sure it's on just in case we need it.
SPEAKER_02What's it we going to? Oh, gear corner. Gear corner.
SPEAKER_01The gear's here. The gear.
SPEAKER_03The gear is here. Is here. Is here. Is here. Is here. Is here.
unknownIs here. Is here. Is here.
SPEAKER_02Dude, I got a new steamer. Oh shit. It's not the way I wanted to say that.
SPEAKER_01Stanley Steamer.
SPEAKER_02Check this bad boy out. This looks like uh one of those um, what are those? A crimping iron. Or those hair dry uh those hair dries are the really nice ones. Oh yeah, the Dyson. The Dyson looks like that. Yeah, it does. Um, I'll put a little uh I got a little video that I'll show you on the screen as you're see looking at this here. But basically the reason why I got it is because you and you can play at Saquon if you want. Um look at this. One one time it goes. Nah. Usually it would be like take a while, but this is uh just one time and it takes out those crinkles. I was gonna do a live demo, but just look at how it clean that is no fucking way. And then look at it for the shirt. That's where I run into the problem.
SPEAKER_06You're gonna have to come back and do a dimension. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Have you really tried this? I haven't tried it yet. Oh, okay, okay. Uh, but it looks cool. And the main thing is because it's got that little compartment which has the water. I'm not seeing it on the thing. It doesn't like my steamer now. Every now and then it have a little bit of a spray of water on it. Me too. Me too. This does not this protects that. So much more is this? This was what do you think?
Gear Corner With A New Steamer
SPEAKER_027879? $69.99. Okay. On Amazon as well. So I can send you the link.
SPEAKER_01This other reason why I like and do that game because I'm pretty good at the price.
SPEAKER_02You are pretty good at it. This is um also international rated, so it's not gonna blow a socket if you're going to be able to do that. You said this was not Amazon? Well, it is on Amazon, yeah. But if you look in there, if you open the box, Dr. Flash. Do a little um satchel? They got a satchel for it. Velveteen satchel? Velveteen, but just look how nice it is. I didn't want to mess with it because I thought I would just I want you to see it in the and the the pod audience to see it as well. But it's like it's heavy duty, it's not the new plastic.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you hadn't demoed it yet. No, I'm doing it this weekend. Okay. So I'll I'll report back. Do that on what do we call it? Cycle back? Yeah, the uh bring it back. Bring it back. Bring it back. Okay. Look at the satchel, bro. I know. Dr. Flash.
SPEAKER_02I hope it's I hope the commercial doesn't like oversell it.
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Do you do you watch that um the Japanese guy that that's all the his whole content is this is ordering stuff that he sees from Timu? Yep. No, or from whatever. Yeah, and he's like, I want it on my desk now. And it drops out of the sky. Do you see this guy? I haven't seen it. And then he he he opens the box and then he just and then he cries. 90% of the time he just starts crying and he goes, $50 wasted. But every once in a while he's like, Yeah. I guess one of those work. Okay, okay. It might be Dr. Flash. Might be. Forget his name. He's great. Let's do the question of the day. Okay, question of the day. Question of the day.
SPEAKER_02You want Rika McKelvey uh from Facebook? Yeah, I'll read it for you. Okay, go ahead. This weekend, when I went out to dinner with a few DJ friends, I realized I've been so out of touch with my creativity. How do you guys make space for creativity? Are you doing any activities or rituals to get in the creative zone? And lastly, what does creativity mean to you? You go first.
SPEAKER_01I feel like this is right up your alley. Um I think just mine like comes in waves. Waves? She smokes a lot of weed. Does we does weed make you creative? You smoke weed, take one. Yes. Is that yes? Is that yes to the creativity? Yes, you smoke weed. Yes. Uh how do you guys make space for creativity? I don't smoke weed. Um, um, mine, I think, Jess, I don't know that I'd necessarily like time block it or make room for it. I think it just kind of comes in ways. And when it when I feel it coming on, that's when I try and like batch create. So I don't just make like one reel that day. I might make 10 reels that day. So I don't really have any activities or rituals or anything to
Making Space For Creativity As DJs
SPEAKER_01get me in the creative mood. If it's not there, it's just not there. I mean, creativity to me means um making stuff, whether that's a a mix, whether it's a reel, whether it's a a more long form video, something for the DJ's vault, you know, which might be six minutes instead of thirty seconds. Um creativity might mean, you know, uh even changing up, you know, my clothes for that season or something like that. Like it It all just depends on on how I'm feeling. But if I'm just kind of in a in a lull or I don't want to call it depression, I just am not really feeling creative, I don't really make anything. And that that's when you might see a little gap in the content or see a repurposed, you know, reel or something like that. So I don't know. Uh what about you? What say you? Yeah, I'm kind of the opposite.
SPEAKER_02I mean, yeah. So I I mean if I waited for it, I don't know if it'd ever come, to be honest with you. Like uh I I but I I say that because sometimes I can get so in the mood of doing and like producing stuff like just for the event, yeah, that I don't leave room for it. Like, you know what I'm saying? So you mean to make your own edits? Yeah, yeah. I just like if I have I'm talking more about like if I had a stack schedule where I've got sales calls, I've got, you know, to prep for the next show, like whatever. I have to make no space, right? Yeah, and I'm just saying make space for it, like basically. So it's not like I'm like, uh, you know, this is creative day, you know, I gotta do it that way. I'm just saying like not overwhelm myself with so many mundane tasks that I never get a chance to flex the creative muscle. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. So for me, it kind of leads into number two, I guess, activities or rituals. I don't really have a ritual, but I would say getting out of the weed. Yeah. Uh just get out of the norm, you know? So for me, it's like travel or just like time off, you know, for me, uh gives me gives me that space to be creative. Yeah. I also would say that um I try not to look at uh what other DJs are doing. Um I think if you get the same kind of input, you're gonna have like a remix of the same output, basically. So for me, I'm looking at you know, art or reading a you know, uh a book sometimes will do that for me. Or watching a movie. Yeah. Different stuff, yeah, you know, like even being at a uh uh you know, seeing a comedian or a concert could even do that, you know, strike the the creative muscle for me. Um, so I mean those are things I do to try to get creativity, like going to New York and different places like that just to like see what people watch. People watch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, people watching great, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh and then as far as like what what what does creativity mean? I mean, to me, I feel like that's an interesting question because I think we all have the ability to see the same things, but we the creative person um sees something a little bit different or notices something uh different within the same thing. So like a hundred DJs could have the same songs, but the DJ that's paying attention to reading the room of what song to play as an example, or what edit makes sense for that moment is the person who's a little bit more creative, you know what I'm saying? So it's just more awareness, I guess, and less it's not so necessarily it's a muscle that can be trained, I guess. All that to say. When I hear people say I'm not creative, I'm like, no, yeah, you are. Yeah, you just haven't flexed that muscle. So to me, I don't feel like it's that, it's just that the people that have more awareness.
SPEAKER_01Do you think there are people that aren't creative though?
SPEAKER_02No, I think anybody can be creative in there in a certain way, right? Okay, you know, if you're always the person at the bank, you know, working behind the teller job, even that person could be creative.
SPEAKER_06You know, creative, counting money. Yeah, yeah, they're gonna be able to do it. Stacking them to it, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Stacking them bennies, you know what I mean? Man, I used to uh we I used to back in the day have a um uh a gaming business where we would like uh have like uh games where you put in quarters. Oh, okay, yeah, yeah. I'm drawing arcade games kind of stuff. We put them in bars and do stuff like that. And I could count a stack of 20 uh because the the rolls of the 25 sensors go up to 20 bucks, I think. Yeah. Um the coin rolls. The coin rolls, yeah, yeah. But you would want to count them fast. Yeah, yeah. Because if someone sees you with all those rolls, they're like, we're following you to the car. Absolutely, right? So I got so good, I would like time myself how quick I could count those things, yeah, and just roll them. Yeah, and I'd be, I mean, I could do them with dimes, all of them, because I would just have all those rolls, like like a little stash of those little things with me back in the day. And I mean, even that, just the game of being creative of like how quickly I can do it to me is just another way of doing it.
SPEAKER_01I never knew that.
SPEAKER_02I never knew you had to have oh, yeah, for a lot minute.
SPEAKER_01And then I just like, yeah, I moved on. Meeting you, the amount of hustles is insane. Speaking of moving on, yeah.
