A great DJ doesn't build a playlist - they tell a story. That idea came from a listener question asking why some wedding DJs command more than double the average rate, and it sparked one of our favorite conversations in recent memory.

We unpack why premium DJs aren't being paid for song selection alone. They're hired to create moments people remember, make smart decisions under pressure, and understand what an event is trying to say...not just what songs it should hear.

Along the way, we share what we learned from a confidential celebrity wedding, a SeaWorld event built around nostalgia, and performing on some of the world's biggest stages at the World Cup. Different audiences. Different objectives. The same lesson: every successful event has a story, and the best DJs know how to support it.

That conversation naturally extends beyond the dance floor. We welcome Vince K from August & Light to the DJC Recharge Raleigh 2026 team and discuss why storytelling (not flashy recap videos) is what creates memorable brands, stronger content, and deeper connections with clients.

We also talk candidly about showing up professionally when life behind the scenes is anything but easy, and why that mindset is just as much a part of your value as your music knowledge.

If you've ever wondered why one DJ earns the average rate while another commands more than double, this episode might change the way you think about your role.

Welcome And August Heat

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to Raleigh, North Carolina's studio of Beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. I'm Brian B. I'm Joe Bunn. It's the August episodes.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, sir. So hot, isn't it? Yeah. It's gonna be real hot in the studio in about 10 minutes. But in general, it's been just uh this July and August, baby. It is. You you still ain't got used to it. No, I tell you. Every year I tell you, it's coming. You're not listening to me. July and August.

SPEAKER_01

No good here, man. But you know what we can do to cool, you know what we can do to cool off? What? Go into the Patreon, the back room. Okay. Listen to some stuff that'll make you feel like you're I don't know, just uh cooled off with the great music. And download it. And download it. Right. So let's shout out one of our Patreon backroom members.

SPEAKER_02

Shout out Eric Millette. Mellette? Mellet?

SPEAKER_01

From Stanley, North Carolina. We had to look it up. Yeah. Aston County. Growing, growing city. 4,000 people from what I saw. Damn Eric. Crushing it out there. Appreciate it, man. Well, speaking of August, we are doing a DJ Collective special for the backroom members only. Okay. You have until August 31st. Yep. I've blotted it out here. What is the DJ Collective? Oh, it's a conference that we've been doing since 2017. Me, you, and Jason Jana. There we go. You'll be here in Raleigh, November 17th. 16th, 16th through the 17th. Yeah. We got some seats still open. Yep. And we thought we would do is for our back room members, if you join, you can save a certain amount of money. We won't put the amount, but it's substantial. Okay. And we'll give you a promo code within the back room. But the key is you have to book your ticket before August 31st. This goes away then. This promo code is no go. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

And that's going to be at the DJ CollectiveOfficial.com. The DJ CollectiveOfficial.com.

SPEAKER_01

So let's talk about the announcement. Who do we have to be a partner with us at this event this year?

SPEAKER_02

I think this is your signing. I don't know about this one. Oh, I think you do, actually. Okay, go on.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe I'm not reading it well. Oh my goodness. Um we have a content creator slash videographer who is also a DJ. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't know his company name. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_01

There we go. So sorry, it's Vince. It's Vince.

SPEAKER_02

Vince.

SPEAKER_01

Is it Vince K, right? Yeah. Yeah. Uh so the name of his company. August and light. August and light.

DJ Collective Deal For Back Room

SPEAKER_01

Cool. I did not know that. Sorry. Sorry, Vince. Shout out Vince. So he's gonna be uh helping us get all the stuff looking good on the socials every day. Okay. Helping us uh capture it in a video way that storytells the whole week.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he was great in Pittsburgh. And you reached out to him. I did. I did that day. Um he shot the first day. They played the recap of the first day at the beginning of the second day, and I was like, oh shit, this guy gets it. And he's a DJ, which I think it helps, you know, yeah, totally to know what to get, and he knows us and he knows this community, and it's just an easy, easy ask.

SPEAKER_01

So what I like about Vince too is that this isn't just a DJ who's doing this on the side. Right.

SPEAKER_02

Like he actually loves it Oh no, no, he this may be his full time, like he he he's really like leaned in, got all the right gear, knows how to shoot,

New Event Partner August And Light

SPEAKER_02

knows how to get the the emotion, the angles, everything. So we're stoked to bring on August and Light, and uh I got Vince. There we go.

SPEAKER_01

Nice. Hey, real quick, Joe, should we explain the back room or just let people figure it out? I think we should explain. All right, it's our Patreon. We call it the back room, a community for you, our listeners, the booth heads. And if you're not in there, you are missing a ton of stuff.

SPEAKER_02

Things like bonus episodes, exclusively recorded monthly for backroom members. Plus the tracks that we pull that actually work for the events when we play them and when you play them. Early batched episodes, giveaways. Look, we have the good stuff there, not junk. We're not gonna email you some sticker.

SPEAKER_01

And it's $19.99 a month for now.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, for now. Go to patreon.com beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Again, patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast.

SPEAKER_01

Join us and our booth head community in the back room. Let's hit the pop culture minute. Brian B. Jobon, dropping heat just for fun.

SPEAKER_03

Pop talk spinning like a wreck of spine.

unknown

Woo!

SPEAKER_03

Pop culture class where the stories collide. Two DJs bringing the flavor we're a while.

unknown

Woo!

SPEAKER_01

Dude, there's been a couple things happening this uh last couple weeks that we've been off from shooting this stuff. So I thought we'd just hit it all real quick. So the first one here uh the Taylor Swift wedding.

What Patreon Back Room Includes

SPEAKER_01

You saw the uh anticipation. The rumors were crazy that week, bro. They were all over the place of what's gonna happen, who's gonna be there, and it has been so tight as far as the communication things coming out from this wedding. Nobody knows hardly anything, which is rare.

SPEAKER_02

Unbelievable. Unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01

For her too, right?

SPEAKER_02

Especially unbelievably well secured. NDAs must be in the city. And that's why that's why it was in Madison Square Garden. Yeah. You had that thing in Rhode Island out on some property. Every drone, every helicopter would have had the whole thing. Yeah. You have it in a stadium that only certain people can get in, and your staff and your security are controlling that area. The only thing we saw is is the celebrities that got caught going in or posting uh Instagrams

Pop Culture Minute Kickoff

SPEAKER_02

and TikToks of themselves getting ready. Right. The Bradley Coopers, the Machine Gun Kellys, yeah, this football player, that football player, this athlete, that rapper, this comedian. Like it was a list, a list. A thousand of them. Oh, it was a thousand guests? A thousand guests. Oh, I didn't I didn't never heard that part. Yeah. I figured it was huge. I mean, if it but it it is so tight-lipped, bro, that I I am super impressed with that they pulled this off.

SPEAKER_01

Do you think the pictures or anything will ever be released, or do you think she's gonna be one of those brides who just doesn't want any of that? Like she wants to keep this for herself.

SPEAKER_02

If they come out, there's going to be a reason or a dollar figure behind it, and that dollar figure will not go to her. So, in other words, if if people say, look, we'll pay 10 million, because you know they exist. We don't even know outside of the planner who they use. That's what I'm saying. It could be fucking one of your friends. Could have been. Joe Kwan or whatever his name is. What's that guy's name? Dennis Kwan. Dennis Kwan. It could be Dennis Kwan. Could have been. He's a Swifty. He and he and he's good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And he's shot a lot of Celebs. Yeah. And you can't miss him. He's a tall guy. He's the seventh tallest Asian in the world. He could be. That's what he says. Oh, that's a kind of thing.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if it's living, but uh, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So uh I I I'm just saying, if if they if they did, it would have it would be whatever, $10 million, and then she donates that to, you know, uh child's cancer. Who knows? Right. It it doesn't go to her. If she doesn't benefit from it, it becomes like some number that you can't resist, it goes to charity or something. That's the way I think. But but it could also be true that nobody other than the what you say is a thousand people ever see the light of day.

SPEAKER_01

Which is crazy because a lot of these weddings, like they set the trends. Can't set a trend if you don't know what's what happened. Right, right. What happened? You know what I mean? Outside of this little sign that they had outside the Madison Square Garden. The only other glimpse that we got besides them getting ready was them leaving the uh, I think it was the rehearsal dinner, and they had these boxes that they were carrying outside of them. And these boxes were like a hundred grand apparently a piece. So times that by a thousand. What are those? Those are we don't know they they said there was a watch, a Rolex watch in there. So I guess they spent about ten to fifteen million on just the gift boxes for all a thousand people if everybody got one. Jesus. That's all we got. So I don't think there's gonna be any trends coming from this outside of the fact that they just were able to keep it tight-lipped. Crazy, man. What else happened? Oh, dude, have you seen this? Yeah, dude, this was going on last summer as well. Yeah. The concert series? He's like yin yang. Yeah, the next one. He was there the other day. Like, they hit the next one. Yin yang! Yeah. That's SeaWorld? Yeah, bro. This was Have you been to SeaWorld? Yeah, I've been to SeaWorld, but I didn't think it's so family friendly. I know.

SPEAKER_02

But you thought what went viral, right? Um that people were targeting and breaking in.

SPEAKER_01

The girl with the baby?

SPEAKER_02

No, come on, bro. Is that the biggest thing?

SPEAKER_01

Is this Seaworld after dark? Like, what's happening? This is a Sea World, bro. But the lineup that they had, did you see this? They got they had Genuine, Ball London franchise boys, oh yeah, P2K, which is the with the Kish Kirkpatrick, O ten on Ryan Kaberman and LFO. Then they had E40,

SeaWorld’s Wild Concert Lineup

SPEAKER_01

Still the Go, Ashanti, Soldier Boy, Paul Wall. Who's playing all those songs? Jordan Sparks, and then two short and Warren G are closing it out. Like, who put this lineup together?

SPEAKER_02

I dude.

SPEAKER_00

Somebody's really trying to wheel it in.

SPEAKER_02

What is going on? Like, but what's the play for Seabor? Just I I would love to know.

SPEAKER_01

Like, who in the marketing department was like, yo, let's bring in like all these people. They did this last year. Did they?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Okay. This kind of heavy. I just happened to see it because I didn't see the whole thing. Yin Yang was definitely there last year.

SPEAKER_00

It wasn't this heavy.

SPEAKER_02

No, it wasn't this heavy. You're playing pony at 9:30 in the morning? D40 had people breaking in. Like, like, like not even there to see the fucking shamu or whatever. The dolphin.

SPEAKER_01

The whale. I just couldn't believe it. I was like, yo, man, this is a lot different than when I was going to SeaWorld. They didn't have these kind of acts.

SPEAKER_02

That's for sure. Bro, here's my SeaWorld story, bro. But we go to the one in Florida. This is not Florida, is it? No, this is San Diego. Okay, we go to Florida. I didn't know they had a SeaWorld bear. They do? Oh, yeah. Still there. Still there. We went to Florida. We were 16. My my uh buddy's dad owned a trucking company. So we rode in a semi-truck from Wilson. Wow. Orlando. His grandparents lived in Orlando. Like we're in that little cab, like where they sleep. And I got lice. I got bad head lice from All Boys Camper. That's why.

SPEAKER_01

Hoping the hair?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That's why I have no hair. We get Orlando. We go to Disney one day. Grandma drops us off the next day at SeaWorld. We're at SeaWorld. And at the time they had this little machine where you could buy these minnows or whatever and feed them to the dolphins. Like a little tray of minnows. So we buy this tray of minnows, and this kid Jack that I was with is like dangling it over the tank. You're supposed to just throw them in. Yeah. Oh, that's a mistake. Pisses the dolphin off. And all of a sudden, this dolphin comes across this pond or whatever, charging at us. And I mean look like it was going to jump. Yeah. And he and I'm like, drop the goddamn minnow or whatever. Drop it. And so like he gets scared or whatever and backs up. He takes like backpedals, backpedaled into a stroller and dumped a baby out onto the hot concrete. Oh. The baby's laying on the concrete crying. The lady's cussing him out. Then he's like, bitch, why did you put the baby behind me? And we're like 16. And I'm crying. Because the baby's not hurt. He's just dumped out of the hot concrete. I'm crying. The lady's screaming, cussing him out. And he's like, why'd you put your stroller behind me? The whole time it's really his fault for like antagonizing a dolphin. That's my C World story. Was this uh Chris Gentry? No, it's like Jack Jack Forbes. An absolute Wilts and the legend.

SPEAKER_01

No relation to relation to Forbes magazine. Well, what else happened? We had the World Cup. Yep. Did you see the next slide here? We got uh Spider playing in LA. Look at that thing. Jesus. How cool was that? Did you see the video you posted? I put a little bit of.

SPEAKER_02

They weren't supposed to pay anybody that worked for FIFA. You know Spinelli did a lot of things just as businesses.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And they he there were varying stages of what you played for. And there was a lot of like, yeah, I'm doing this and I'm doing that. And I'm like, well, that's that's big. Yeah. He did one of them with uh with Travis Barker. Right. He there were people that were working for FIFA, there were people that were working, I think, for the stadium, maybe. There were people working for the city. Yeah. There were people there were people working for ATT. Right. There were people working for Vi. Every DJ we know had some story of being involved in the World Cup.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But the people that worked for FIFA, according to Spinelli, were not supposed to post anything. And they super NDA'd them up. Right. They all the DJs even went to like tried to lobby, like, hey, let us post content. And they basically said, absolutely. If you want to do the gig, nah. Yeah. So anything you probably saw was a lot of like restoring and stuff like that. That might be what this next video is. I I don't know, but I'm just saying that's

World Cup DJ Moments And NDAs

SPEAKER_02

that's always always always idle. I don't like it. Good for him, though, man, right?

SPEAKER_01

Anyway, deserve it. That is what you got.

SPEAKER_02

I love it. Oh my god. Look at that.

SPEAKER_01

You know what I loved about this though? Like, DJs had a moment. Absolutely. Like, there was no bands anywhere in this thing that I saw. Dude, and I'm connected to enough where they would have posted.

SPEAKER_02

DJs had a moment. I'm proud of everybody. I don't care if you played the ATT 10 or this or whatever. Like, I'm proud of everybody that was affiliated with it. And you know what I'm proud of, man? And I and I was saying it from week one when people started showing up here. Dude, I'm proud of the United States. I'm proud of that. We we posted the fuck out of this. Oh, yeah. And Dubai four years ago was a disaster, from what I understood. I mean, and it was it just, you know, it's Dubai. I mean, you can't go there even right now, right? It's just it's it's a mess. Right. Dude, the United States, and it gets destroyed in the media locally and abroad. Yeah. And these people showed up here and they were like, hold on, man, this is not what we've been told. This ranch is amazing. This this fucking city is going nuts. Every restaurant we go to, these people are lovely. The food is incredible. We get ice with our water. Ice with our water. Free refills, air conditioning in every building, a stadium that makes our best one look like a fucking high school bleacher. Yeah. I mean, like we showed up and showed the world why this is the greatest country on earth. Yeah. And I and I, dude, I couldn't have been more proud. Honestly. Like I love this country. And I feel every day that I wake up here, do we have our fucking problems, politics? Yes. But I there's not one day I've woken up in 55 years and gone, goddamn, I wish I'd been born somewhere else. Yeah. Yeah. Totally. That's just me. Yeah. I I'm sure there are plenty of people that have different opinions, but we showed up for this fucking moment and showed exactly why we are the fucking greatest.

SPEAKER_01

Well, at time of taping, the final was yesterday. Yeah. So I didn't see it yet. I saw all my thing. But tell me about the halftime show from a musical standpoint.

SPEAKER_02

I mean anybody stand out? The Madonna thing was definitely pre-taped, and the whole Madonna opening was pre-taped. And then she walked out at the end. And it was just it's I looked at the case.

SPEAKER_01

This is the first time they've ever done this. Pre-taped? What do you mean?

SPEAKER_02

The very beginning of the show was pre-taped.

SPEAKER_00

It was a whole monitor.

SPEAKER_02

Um no, no, like a like it was a it was pre-taped. Go back and watch it. It was, it was, it was pre-taped. And then she just kind of walked out, like, you know, that she they're driving in this little car, and then she jumps out of the car and then walks out into the stadium. It cut at that point, and then so that part was real.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, okay.

SPEAKER_02

I do think actually, though, and I go, I don't know why these artists Chris Martin put it together. Coldplay. Oh, he did? Yeah, he did. He was the one who got them on the I don't know why these artists so don't know when it's time to hang it up.

SPEAKER_00

They can't, bro.

SPEAKER_02

Is that what it is? I don't think they can.

SPEAKER_01

They're addicted to the money, man. Yeah. And the fame and all that, I'm sure. I mean, the only person you thought of was Madonna who should have hung it up in this thing. Uh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, yeah, because she's Who else was on there? It was JB. Um Shakira. Shakira. She don't need to hang it up. Bieber did a ballad, which I thought was a little bit weird. Shakira don't need to hang it up. No, that's what I'm saying. My goddamn girl. How dare you? I said no. No, she should stay on. Um they had those little kids from Africa that are always viral. Oh, I love them. Yeah, yeah. Um Chris Martin was in the crowd and like jumping up and down, but like Ashley was like, there's no way that's Chris Martin, because they never showed a shot of him. Really? It's just he was so much taller than everybody. He was the one who put this whole lineup together. Oh, that makes more sense now. Um and then BTS. BTS, I'm sure they crushed. Yep. With their crowd, right? I don't know who the guy was with Shakira. You sounded um Caribbean, like uh Caribbean to. Will you Google that and just see who was the guy with Shakira?

SPEAKER_01

So do you think this is gonna be a thing now? This is the first time they've ever done it. Uh I think every World Cup they're gonna have some kind of I don't know if it they've never done it.

SPEAKER_02

You're right. And it's you know, very American to do these big half times, and I think that's why they did it. So I don't know. I d uh secondly, Saquon, we look up where the uh World Cup is in 2030, I'm just curious as well. Yeah. Um to do with Shakira. Anyway. Um, I don't know. It yeah, it was entertaining, man. I mean, I I probably would have been I mean the lineup was very exactly what it probably should have been. Right. It's represented all over the world, yeah. Right. You uh Shakira's uh Brazilian or Colombian, right? Uh BTS is Korean, um Madonna's very American, JB's Canadian. It was a there was a black guy that came out with her and did like a rap part.

SPEAKER_00

He had like he looked they say Ronaldo was out there, but oh yeah, they came out with Madonna or whatever.

SPEAKER_02

It was an artist with Shakira and he he kind of looked like I don't know. Where's 2030? Yeah. Um anyway, I don't know. You didn't you didn't watch a game or the halftime show?

SPEAKER_01

I didn't, man. My wife was doing something and I had to take the kiddo, and so we're gonna go. The game was not what I knew that would be boring. I knew it was gonna be low scoring. Yeah. That's the boring part, you know. Which is there's tension to it, I'm sure.

SPEAKER_02

But I I d I distinctly remember, man, 2022. The game was at 10 in the morning or nine in the morning. Yeah, because it's Dubai or whatever. And people were like and I had not watched any zero game.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And people were like, hey man, you you need to get up and watch. Yeah. This is this France and Argentina game is gonna be insane. And it was insane. It was like three to two. Yeah. Then it goes to penalty kicks.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, Messi's trying to solidify his legacy. You got the young kid Mbappe. Like it was cinema. Yeah. And so I think I got myself so excited this year. Right. I mean, I'm on the couch at three o'clock, like, let's go. And then it just Jennifer Hudson, by the way, crushed the national anthem. That's what I heard. Crushed.

SPEAKER_00

All right, I got it.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Hundred year anniversary.

SPEAKER_02

Oh. Of next is next year.

SPEAKER_00

No, thirty uh twenty thirty.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, yeah, yeah. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_00

It's gonna be in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain.

SPEAKER_02

Ooh.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Are they gonna do a halftime show? I don't know. And we don't know who the black guy is with scare.

unknown

I didn't.

SPEAKER_02

Your library if you don't already have you hot in that hoodie? I'm not. I'm hot in here already. Really? Yeah. All right. So uh this first one is uh Touch

DJ’s Vault Sponsorship Break

SPEAKER_01

a Funk, who I love his blends. He's such a great job. Fire. Yep. This is for a corporate conference. You could use this. This is no broke boys over Prince's I Wanna Be Your Lover. You're gonna need your headphones for this, by the way. So let me get these on real quick, too. Go ahead and hit the track. Saquon.

SPEAKER_05

Just as I suspected, no one really gets over.

SPEAKER_01

Again, corporate conference or walk-in yep. You hit both the older crowd and the newer crowd with this. I love it. Waiting for it. The key? Yeah. Parts the part where it means I'm wondering if it's gonna work too.

SPEAKER_05

It worked.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, they get a good thing. Are you still using NoBook Boys in your sets? See, that's why I wouldn't play this version anywhere else but like a corporate conference or a cocktail hour where they're not gonna be able to do it. You played it the other night. I did play it. Yeah. Yeah, that

Five Tracks We’re Playing Out

SPEAKER_01

was a good one. Uh the second one is this beefed up version. We were talking in the private episode about songs that were making sound a little bit better.

SPEAKER_02

Speaking of, tell them what the bonus episode or the private episode is. You do it, buddy. Okay. If you are not a member of the Patreon, you need to go to patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. You're gonna get a bonus episode. And you can join uh and quit whenever you want, quite frankly. So, you know, if you're you're not getting the value out of it, which at what is it, 30 bucks a month?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I mean You got a hundred people you just saw recently. 100 people in our backroom community, which we love. So that's amazing. I'm proud of that. I am too. Anyway. So this song is the Dario Carmenita. Oh, yeah. Revibe. I've got some of these tracks. This is Please Don't Go. I've been adding this to my Doors Open and also to my uh what would you call it? The cocktail hour, I guess. Okay. KC and the Sunshine Band. I would use this with like, you know, the Michael Jackson in the nature. You know, like all those kind of like I love this. Yeah, it is. First concert I ever went to. I remember you.

SPEAKER_02

I think I was like eight or seven. Not maybe two or seven. Good version. Great version. He lives here.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So the third one here is uh another Brian B. blend. This is by uh Aaron Can Do It is the editor's name, Aaron Can Do It. This is uh the song Giant, which was I think that was Rag and Bone and Calvin Harris, I believe, was the original artist.

SPEAKER_02

But it never really got big.

SPEAKER_01

It never did, but that backing track is really good, like the instrumental to it. But this is with Cruel Summer, Banorama. Yeah, bananorama. Oh, sorry. And then Lana Del Reddy Okay, Summertime Sadness. Oh this is a walk-in for me. Especially in the summer. Little disco purple disco team. Oh, right? I love it. You get three bangers out of it. It's a great walk-in. Let's people know you know the old stuff and the new stuff.

SPEAKER_02

I know when so I've been off for a long time, and on the reset, number one, I've completely redone my DJ booth and all my cameras and everything from the ground up. And then two, uh, I'm doing a full reset on Doors Open and my most played tracks. I love it. Yeah. Love it. That's right.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I've been doing like in the month off. Number four of five. This is again talking to what we talked about on the private episode about this. Is a song that I absolutely love. Get up off that thing. Dennis Blaze, if you search him anywhere, he's been doing a lot of great um I I don't want to even call them redrums. Maybe a little bit of a redrum. I guess this would be that. But he's punched up the drums enough where it's not overbearing to this James Brown track. And now this is the one I'm gonna use because I love that track in general, but here it is. See how that feels tighter. Drums once you hear the intro. But he didn't bastardize it. Like the drums are balanced right in this. And now it feels great with the modern stuff that you're playing. Like these are the kind of redrums I put in the library, if I put any, not the ones that are way over the top. I love that song too. Great song, great opener first set somewhere in there. And then this last one here is um one I've been using. This is kind of a wordplay, and now I do it live. I don't even use this blend anymore, but this is the Hitman Segue going from baby into push it by salt and pepper.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, I have the bow and get the uh stems just to acapella out.

SPEAKER_01

I just love that. I think it really works well. You think you can still get away with push it, though? Oh, yeah, young crowd short version, short version. It actually has been doing really well for me. Really? Yeah. Because they definitely weren't born when that came out. Totally. That beats undeniable, though. Yeah, you can't miss that.

SPEAKER_02

So they should get them at SeaWorld.

SPEAKER_00

Salt and pepper would fucking crush out. I don't think they're cool. Oh.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think they're so like beef. Oh, I think you're right. They might be. Yeah. Spinderella is only cool with one of them, too.

SPEAKER_01

I think as a whole, yeah, you're right. Good point. So if you like some of these tracks, these might be in the winky winky bonus content on the Patreon. Brian B here. unknown

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Uh so a couple weeks ago, I had a wedding. My stepdad, who is in his 70s, he is health has been a little bit declining a bit. And uh the Friday before I left, I left on a Saturday day of event, and my mom was like, Hey, we're putting them in hospice. And I've never been through the situation. And in fact, I didn't even know how long that meant he had hospice. I don't I don't think people do know. They don't know, right? It can be quick. It's basically your body shutting down.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_01

And sometimes that sometimes you hang on. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. The doctor said, by the looks of it, it probably won't be until Sunday or Monday, right? So I'm at this event thinking nothing's gonna happen, everything's good. And then I get the text from my mom literally before I'm about to start this reception. Hey, you know, and she didn't say it like that, obviously, but like your stepdad passed today. And I'm like, uh, right before like literally before grand entrance. And I never had anybody like that close to me like pass during, you know, and it was just weird because I here I am celebrating the best of someone's life, and then I got this kind of weighing in the background. And the only thing I could do, the reason why I even bring it up, I don't like to spill my personal stuff here, but was just because I had to get through it, you know, and I'm like, the biggest thing was I mean, I knew my stepdad really well, but my mom was who I was most concerned about that she didn't have me there, yeah, you know, while this is all going on.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But I'm like, I know

Showing Up During Real Life Loss

SPEAKER_01

my stepdad well enough that he would have said, dude, crush the show. A hundred percent. See me afterwards, and we'll deal with everything afterwards. But that's the best way you can kind of honor my legacy is basically crush it for these people. And they don't need to know, you know, just just just make it happen. And that's kind of the way I looked at it was like this show is dedicated to you, you know? And I just kept thinking about that the entire time I was playing. As soon as it was over, I had to like literally catch a plane and head down to see my mom and like take care of stuff. But I just was curious if you've ever had an issue or a situation where it doesn't have to be death, I think it's a little bit morbid, but like where you had to get through an event because something catastrophic happened, maybe I don't know. Uh just something in the weighing in the back of your mind. It doesn't even have to be medically. How do you get through it? Just curious how you may have the same thing, I think, happened when my dad died.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Was it around the Amazon? No, but it was a it had to have been a an end of a week. And then let's let's just say it was on a Thursday. Yeah. I remember it was April 19th. I remember the day, and then the weekend was coming. And and they couldn't get this funeral together, you know, whatever. Yeah. It wasn't like a cremation, it was like a a whole funeral with like the you gotta hire the priest, you gotta go pick out a coffin. Like it was a shit show. You know, like went through it, yeah. And that's what he wanted, right? So by the time they got it done at let's call it the funeral was gonna be on Monday, and there was a show in between. It was a wedding, and I was just like, same thing. I was just thinking to myself, ain't no way my dad wouldn't be like, you gotta go out there and just rock the show. Right. Like you have to like and again, we could be speaking about you get in a fight with your girlfriend. Right, right, right. You you get in a fight with your wife, your husband, you uh you get in a wreck, you know, on the way to the show. Like that you have to like truly like take yourself out of your body and put yourself in another entertainer's shoes. Right. You know what I mean? And just do the show, do what you're paid to do. Right. Because your problems are not their problems. Totally agree. That that you cannot take that stuff there. These people been uh counting on you, uh wishing for this day, hoping for this day, looking for perfection, and you have to still deliver.

SPEAKER_01

The other thing is I couldn't don't think I could have prepared myself for it either. Getting through it. Yeah. Like it was just one of those things where until it happens, you know, I I if it if he had passed, you know, and I I thought, okay, it would be no big deal. But then I kind of you kind of get the gulp in your throat, you know, and you're just like, yo, oh man. Like, I don't know, it just had more meaning to me this particular wedding because of that. And I just wanted to bring it up just because I had never been through that myself with somebody that close to me. Right.

SPEAKER_02

And uh I think you just you you just gotta you gotta, you know, it's almost like you just take yourself out of your body, you know what I mean? Like you have to just completely um check it out the door. I've always said that. And more I'm usually speaking about, like, you know, fight with your girlfriend, or your kids are acting up, right? You didn't sleep well or you're sick. I mean, all that stuff. Yeah. Totally. And we filmed some videos earlier this year. Man, I I think I was on a streak like two or three in a weekend, and like we put them all into one video. I watched that video maybe a month or two ago. I'm like, good lord, man. Like, I my voice was destroyed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was just sick. Right. I felt like shit. And even on the video, I'm like, I feel like shit. Yeah. But the show goes on. Show goes on. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, hopefully this is helpful. Let's bring it forward in a positive manner here with the question of the day. Question of the day. Nick Spinelli. Okay. Send this in through Facebook. Uh, I didn't even know he was on Facebook. What are the true average prices of wedding DJs? No, he told me he crushes on Facebook more than any platform, I think. Really? Yeah. He's back. Okay. What are the true average prices of wedding DJs currently? And how do you charge over double than average?

SPEAKER_02

You go ahead, buddy. I I don't know what the average price of DJs are. I know what people I could tell you, uh, in fact, I have a spreadsheet on it, and I I asked them, asked them straight up. I know the price of almost every DJ in Raleigh, North Carolina. Whether it's a single op or a multi-op. Like that's the kind of relationship I have with these people to where I reach out and go, hey man, what are y'all charging this year? And it's all it's from 1,500 to 5,000. Now, some of those people, again, are one person, some have multiple, like I do. Um we are probably uh average ticket is about 37, and I think it's gonna go up to right under four next year. Right. And we get that pretty consistently. I

Wedding DJ Pricing And Premium Positioning

SPEAKER_02

think I'm gonna be like low five and I don't no negotiation, no I don't care what day it is, I'm not leaving the house for less.

SPEAKER_01

I love it.

SPEAKER_02

Um I don't know across the country. I'm assuming that five would be good. 7,500 would be really good, 10,000 would be astronomical if I just had to just rip numbers off the top of my head. Um, but I don't believe that those are the by any means the average. I think people are still I think there are tons of DJs well under 3K and throwing in everything but the kitchen sink. And I I hate to say that, but I truly believe that. Yeah. How do you charge over I again, man, this is it's just going to go back to why. You know, if I'm getting married and I've got money and I know you, Spinelli, or I know uh of Brian or Joe Bunn or whoever, I'm going to have to still be sold. Even if I have money, like real money, and and I'm doing my DJ, you know, due diligence, or the wedding planners go, hey, here are three, go look at these. And I go, wait a minute, you know, Brian B. wants 12,000. Joe said he would do it for 5,500. I need to at the very least, I'm going to probably book a meeting with Brian and go, why? Right. And you better be prepared to tell me why. Right. So why? Tell me, Brian. Why, why uh let's let's pretend because I think you better than anybody are able to answer and deliver on this question of why.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'm a groom getting married. Uh hey, um, hey man, just doing my shopping around. We've met with a couple DJs. Just out of curiosity, you're double their rate. Why?

SPEAKER_01

Well, the way that I like to deliver my work is very much a process that's rooted in storytelling. So what I do is I take you through it in terms of kind of hearing about what you're looking to tell in the story for the wedding day. And then I program around that and kind of come up with ways to make that kind of come to life for your guests. If that sounds like something you want to do, I'd love to walk you through what that looks like. However, if it's not, you know, I'm probably not the right fit. Great start.

SPEAKER_02

Now I'm intrigued. Right. Right. And as a music person, which I assume most people that are gonna even look at that price point are, right? They're not gonna be the well, we're not big dancers. Right. I don't even care about that part. I don't want those people. Right. I don't want them anyway. Right. I mean it's a good start. But that's just part of it because you're you're you're delivering on everything from the customer service, the the pre-planning, yeah, the uh day of show, the the the you know, curating the list. I mean, like I feel like you have gone you know, ten steps beyond what I do.

SPEAKER_01

Well, and to be fair, this isn't a humble brag. I don't really get that question. Why are you 10 you know, double three times the as much as everybody else? Because I feel like these two questions are fighting each other. Okay. You know, how do you charge over double the average and then you're asking about the average? The person who can afford double the average isn't looking at the average, right? Like to me, if you're asking about true average prices and you're you're really you know curious about that, then you're interchangeable with somebody else who is that that's why you want to find out what the average is, right?

SPEAKER_02

I I I want to know the reason I always ask those people is because I want to make sure I am considerably more. Okay, well, there you go. That's why I ask those people. I see, I don't, yeah, the way we And then I also encourage them, I'm like, you ain't charging enough dollars.

SPEAKER_01

Right, totally. And the people who can charge double, you know, I'm talking about the client who or who can pay for double. Honestly, like the price isn't the first consideration. It might be, I mean, if you're a hundred thousand dollars and you're some celebrity or whatever, but for the guy who is or girl who is charging that much in general, let's just put it like I don't know, twenty-five thousand dollars. Let's just uh that's a high, high number, but somebody who would be charging that, they're not doing this because of the price. They're not necessarily 90% of them are not getting you because you charge that. They're getting you because you're one of one, or because you alleviate some kind of risk for them, or you are uh not somebody that somebody else can just be plugged and played into that part, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Right? So you're so well touted, well recommended that they have they feel like they have no choice, right? But like, man, we went to the venue, right, the wedding planner, the florist, the cake maker, and everybody was like, dude, you gotta get if Joe Bunn is available, it is crazy not to get Joe Bond.

SPEAKER_01

Totally agree. Right. But that's why I'm saying the average at that point doesn't matter. Yeah. So, and I'm assuming that he wants to get out of the average area and up, right? So, like, I wouldn't even worry about the average at this point in your career, Nick. This is the question I was asking myself before I got a business coach. Yeah. Because I was like, it just sounded like this is what you would want to ask.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And then I had to retrain my brain to go, wait a minute. You can't try to answer these questions if you've never been there, really, right? So, like, I've gotten over that hump and I realize I need to get somebody over that hump to help me understand the psychology of somebody who has that kind of money and what questions they're asking. They don't care about the average price, they're not looking at that. They don't want average, they want something that is transformative. So, whether that's, you know, your talent, it could be your customer experience. I mean, there's a bunch of different things. Hopefully, it's all of it wrapped into one, but it's usually one of those dynamics that you got to really hone in on and build your brand around that. Now, I don't know much about Nick from this performance. I've actually never seen him DJ. Uh, maybe just clips, but I'm not saying I've seen him live. A whole show, right? And what but what stands out to me from his social is that he's very big into wordplays. Loves that, from what I can gather. Now, is there enough of those people who love that as well that are willing to pay that? Maybe there are. I don't know. I mean, I I don't market that, I don't tout that. But that's the thing where I would re-look at your social, Nick, and be like, listen, is this gonna move the needle so that when see people see this, they know that this is what I'm all about? Yeah. And if it's not, it might be worth changing because you know, yes, you can get popular. That's that's one way of getting it, but that doesn't necessarily mean no one the people who have the money are looking for something transformative, not necessarily looking at your your your social media handle to go, oh my God, that's exactly what I want. To your point, it's usually a planner referral. Somebody who's like, you gotta have this person. And they're not even telling you why necessarily until you get into that conversation. They're not gonna go until they have that conversation with you. So that would be my suggestion. Man, I told you, Brian would be able to help.

SPEAKER_02

Good stuff, dude. Let's thank our sponsor. Yeah, I want to thank DJ Event Planner, DJ Eventplanner.com. They are the CRM of Choice for Beyond the DJ Booth Podcast, myself and Brian B.
