Looking for EDM tracks that actually work at weddings? We share the edits we keep coming back to - from hooks-and-drops and chorus-first versions to mashups that bridge EDM with hip hop and rock so mixed crowds stay on the dance floor.

We also react to a viral video from a bride who says she regrets spending $2,000 on a wedding DJ and built an app to help couples DIY their music. It sparks a bigger conversation about what clients are really paying for, why playlists aren't the same as leadership, and where our industry could do a better job communicating our value. We also debate popular "faster setup" hacks like zip-tying cables, why presentation still matters, and how small workflow decisions affect your brand.

Finally, we answer a listener question about vendor trades and discounts, sharing when they make business sense and when they don't.

What's up, everybody? Welcome back to another episode of Beyond, the DJ Booth podcast with your two co-hosts, Joe Bun. Saying uh-huh, and your boy Brian B. What's up? What's up? You guys are uh doing well in July, usually downtown, downtown, downtime for a lot of people. Hot as shit here, I can tell you that. Probably. Are you blocking out the beach for a lot of the months? Absolutely.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I ain't doing too much in July and August. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I agree. Yeah. Fishies. Oh, that's a lie. At the end of July, I'm going to um Tokyo in Australia. That's right. Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

All right. Well, it's still kind of vacate. You'll have some time off, I would think. All right. Well, let's uh thank some of our Patreon people. For those of you who are not familiar with this podcast, we have a back room or a Patreon where we post a ton of great things every week. Yeah. From banger lists to sometimes bonus content that comes from an episode to I did a Serato Export recently where I put a playlist of exactly what I played from. In the order. In the order. Yeah. Um, we also get questions for this podcast from that. So lots of cool things in there if you want to check it out. We encourage you.

July Downtime And Patreon Shoutouts

SPEAKER_05

Who's our one of our latest members? Uh shout out Troy Michael.

SPEAKER_04

Millilani Hawaii? Yeah, just got back from Hawaii. Did you go to Mili Lani? I don't even know where that's at, to be completely candid. But uh thanks, Troy, for being a member. And if you guys are interested in being a member, it is patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth podcast. Hawaii's six hours away, bro.

SPEAKER_05

That is you were just three hours away recently going to California. Oh no, no, time zone. Time zones. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Six hours is a huge difference. It is crazy. And it's like, you know, I'm getting up at seven in the morning. You're like, yo, it's like three o'clock in the afternoon. I know. I'm like, yeah, I'm like, let's get going here, buddy. You're like, bro, it's 7 a.m. It's crazy. Um so let's talk about the DJ Collective. What's coming up? It's a conference once again. If you are just listening and catching this for the first time, and you're like, hey, love what you guys are talking about, but I want to go deeper. I want to meet some people. I want to like hang out with you guys. Well, come hang out.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. And Raleigh. And add in Jason Jani. Add in Jason Jani. Sorry. How can I forget that? How can you forget Jani?

SPEAKER_05

He's he's a hurricane, though.

SPEAKER_04

You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_05

He is a hurricane. I haven't talked to him much this year. I feel like this year has been a little bit quiet with the Jan I. He's doing a lot of stuff. Oh, he's uh he's out there. He's just got a new office. He's digging a new office.

SPEAKER_04

He's been putting things together. A lot of announcements coming from. A lot of announcements coming from Jan I, I feel like, very soon. But uh the conference is gonna be here in Raleigh, North Carolina, November 16th through 18th. If you want to take a look at the website, it is the DJ CollectiveOfficial.com. Uh, we are at the Maxwell. It's a gorgeous wedding venue here this year. It's gonna be epic. One of the sponsors is going to be a company near and dear to my heart, and that is the DJ's Vault. Uh again, if you're not a member of the DJ's Vault, uh, it has literally helped thousands of DJs to grow their DJ business. It is the DJ'svault.com, and they're gonna be one of our sponsors this year.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, including a seminar that one of the elite new leadership group

DJ Collective Conference Preview

SPEAKER_05

or team or whatever you call it. Uh Rich Cranston's gonna give us a talk. And that dude is pretty he's like he's pretty on par with like the last guy we just announced.

SPEAKER_04

We we announced Tom Gambooza last time and and Rich is up there too. Rich is up there, smart, smart as a whip. Great DJ, built a killer business, but even better, probably on the business end of things. So uh hard combo, creative uh that has a business mind. Uh so you're gonna get to see Rich Cranson, and he's gonna be uh repper in the DJ's Vol. He's part of the leadership team. Hell yeah. All right, well, we'll see you there. Yeah. Let's go to the pop culture minute. Okay. Brian B.

SPEAKER_08

Joe Bond dropping heat just for fun. Pop talk spinning like a wreck of spine.

unknown

Woo!

SPEAKER_08

Pop culture clash where the stories collide. Two DJs bringing the flavor we're wild.

SPEAKER_05

All right, this is the DJ edition. Have you I've been looking at uh been I don't know, just because I'm in the DJ stuff, so sometimes it pops up on the feed. Saw this new product that's coming out. I don't know if you've seen it, but uh, this is up from a bride who created it. Okay. See what you think.

SPEAKER_09

I regret spending $2,000 on my DJ at my wedding, so much so that after my wedding, I developed an app to help other couples seamlessly DIY their music. I want to show you how the playlist sections work. So basically, all non-ceremony sections like cocktail hour, your dinner, and dance floor. Let's use the dinner section as an example. The way this works is that you're going to have a core playlist. So all the songs that you want played throughout dinner, you'll add into the dinner playlist. They have your helper just needs to press start. I'm gonna go ahead and click that here so we can let it play in the background. And these songs will seamlessly crossfade from one into another, similar to how Spotify has their crossfade functionality all of the songs underneath this are what I call special moments. So these would be like your first dance, your parent dances, your

DIY Wedding DJ App Debate

SPEAKER_09

grand entrance, bouquet toss, anything where you have a special song for that particular moment. And the way this works is that when it's time to play a special moment, your helper dev will press next cue and it's going to fade out your playlist and fade into your special moment. And any of these songs can be customized. So let's say you want your first dance to fade in at 20 seconds and fade out at a minute and 40 seconds. You can totally do that. You can set all of those configurations on the previous screen so your helper doesn't need to know that. The app will handle it for you. Once your special moment is done playing, you could either press next cue and it will go right into your next special moment if there's one right after the other, or you can click that return to playlist button and it's going to pick up right where you left off. Now you can add as many songs as you like into this playlist. You can also set the link for it, and then you can see the progress to make sure that you've added enough songs. The app is called Cue the Moment. Right now it's available on the Apple App Store, and we're working on an Android version coming soon. If I had this for my wedding, it would have easily saved me over $1,800. And more importantly, I would have actually had the music that I wanted. Our DJ did not follow our instructions at all, so the wrong music was played.

SPEAKER_04

Shut the fuck up. This is so stupid, dude. I hope that she's got every dollar of her money invested in this bullshit app.

SPEAKER_05

This is trash. I just couldn't believe it's coming out on my feed. I'm like, well, how did this get how am I targeted for this?

SPEAKER_04

I've never seen this and I don't want to see it. If you've tainted my feed by putting this out there to the I need to turn the mic off on my phone. This is garbage, dude.

SPEAKER_05

Well, it just I my my point is with showing.

SPEAKER_04

You're helper.

SPEAKER_05

You're helper, yeah, yeah. I mean, who's gonna do that part? But I I guess. Let's call it a DJ. Yeah. Hire a good one. Right, right. But for the low, low end, the vibe-coded, you know, thing is a big thing right now. People are building their own stuff. So I all have to say is that you can't just rely on, you know, getting by with just, you know, hey, I'm gonna play a play. I feel like you gotta be a good programmer, you gotta be a good DJ. You can't just rest on your laurels. All right, so something positive. Something positive.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. It took me 15 years to realize this as a DJ, but if you come with all of the cables all zip tied together, it makes it so that you can set up super fast and super easy. So if you have something with a lot of wires, a lot of cables like CDJs, boom, just snake them all together. They're all zip tied in. So all you gotta do is go down the line. And here we go. Last one, and boom, it's all connected. I use digital inputs instead of RCA inputs. Uh, because all you have to do is plug in one cable. When if you were plugging in RCA into the back of here and into the CDJ, you'd have to plug in two cables. So it just saves you a tiny bit of time. But when you're setting up so much stuff, it's way easier to plug in less cables and more. I've never thought of that.

SPEAKER_05

I have. The zip tie method. You don't think it's a good one? It's a mess. Why well if you have one bad cable, you're screwed. It's because then you gotta take it all apart.

SPEAKER_04

It's it's terrible for the cables. You still have to wind it up. Uh, even if you snip off the c the zip ties well, it cuts the shit out of your hands when you're rolling it up. Okay. I I mean, much furthermore, yeah. 10x

Cable Management And Faster Setups

SPEAKER_04

beyond that, this guy looks like he's setting up for a private event with $12,000 worth of decks. That's two, it's it's CDJ $3,000 and whatever Nexus 9 trillion mixer, like and a table. Like, what is that steel table? Like, is he gonna jump up on top of it? Like, what are we doing? I hate it, dude. I now I'm just both of these videos have me disgusted.

SPEAKER_05

Okay. I'm just trying to think of a third one. No, that's it. Is there a third one?

SPEAKER_04

I was trying to put a maybe a picture of your daughter learning to swim or something. My thought was it saves time. It doesn't. You don't think it does? It's a fuck show, man. I've never done it. So I I have. It's it's a it's a rig job. There's a lot of negatives to it, man. I mean, the reason why I even bring it up. What he's trying to do, but it's just not.

SPEAKER_05

So what would be your what would be your suggestion if you're trying to cut down setup time with having to do all these cables like this? And the other thing that I would say that is a positive with this is the jankiness of cables just being out there. I was playing in Hawaii recently, and the booth, the cables were everywhere. It looked like a hot mess. Like they don't care. So I was like, how do I clean this up enough to make it not look so janky? You ready? Yeah, give it to me.

SPEAKER_04

Blunggear.com. Command center 2.0.

SPEAKER_05

Next. Yeah, gotta get to get a distributor out in Hawaii, apparently, because they don't have any of that out there. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_04

We did just start shooting to Hawaii last week. Did you? Yeah. Okay. Shout out Hawaii.

SPEAKER_05

Shout out Millilani. Hey, real quick, Joe, should we explain the back room or just let people figure it out? I think we should explain. All right. It's our Patreon. We call it the back room, a community for you, our listeners, the booth heads. And if you're not in there, you are missing a ton of stuff. Things like bonus episodes, exclusively recorded monthly for backroom members.

SPEAKER_04

Plus the tracks that we pull that actually work for the events when we play them and when you play them. Early bashed episodes, giveaways. Look, we have the good stuff there, not junk. We're not gonna email you some sticker.

SPEAKER_05

And it's $19.99 a month. For now.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. For now. Go to patreon.com beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Again, patreon.com slash Beyond the DJ Booth Podcast.

SPEAKER_05

Join us and our booth head community in the back room. Um well, this is just GJ news. All right. Okay. All right. So let's move into some crate finds.

SPEAKER_04

Okay, before we get into this section, I want to say when I sent you mine, I'm well aware before people were like, this motherfucker's living in 2010 that I am living in 2010 because that's what works. Right. I agree. I'm not trying to I'm not Bob Hickman and go to you know EDC uh Sweden and know like what the hot blah blah blah. I don't know that stuff. No. I'm telling you what works in this market always. That's my find. So let me segue into that with this clip that I saw. Like I didn't know that guy that just died, Oliver Tree. I don't know that guy. I don't know him. Well, he's probably he's a big, he's a big deal.

SPEAKER_02

I didn't I knew of him, but I didn't know he was that big.

unknown

Right.

SPEAKER_05

He's a YouTuber, right?

SPEAKER_02

No, no, he's an artist. He he's like kind of helicopters. I mean, I know what he was. And he made music. Oh, okay. But he was like a series. Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_04

He's an EDM guy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Okay. I mean, I'm just saying, if if we're trying to go like, no, I wasn't trying to do that. Okay.

SPEAKER_08

Great. Fine's great. Fine's digging deep for the good times. Great. Fine's great. Fine zidden gems in the rewind.

SPEAKER_05

All right. But just to open up the the section here or this portion of the pod episode, let me play this clip for you.

EDM Crate Finds For Weddings

SPEAKER_03

Hip hop is dead right now, right? We can almost argue, right? Dance music in 2026 is much bigger than it was in 2018. Like I saw something on Billboard the other day, or Forbes, like the dance music market EDM is bigger than it's ever been, the business. It's a five to ten billion dollar business yearly now. Do you think it's because of TikTok? Because everyone else is a good idea. I would just say that the dance music culture has stolen from other genres. And what I mean by stolen is like a lot of other genres, rock, alternative, like dance music is just taking all these different people and mixing it in, right? Give you an example. EDC just happened last week. They have a stage for called EDM. It's a country music mix of EDM. There's just that, right? Diplo does this country festival where he has a stage, stage coach, right? He has a whole stage dedicated to EDMs for dance music. So it's like dance music has become this thing where like you can bring in hip hop, you can bring in Latin, you can bring in rock, you can bring in country, all under this one umbrella. And I think that's why it's the biggest genre in 2026. That is nuts. EDM is just like I've always been a big Lala guy, right? I love EDM. And then you know, right? Because I I fell in love with dance music at Lala.

SPEAKER_05

So it's interesting. I'm seeing more and more EDM, I guess, is where I was kind of leaning to this in my dance request than I've ever had. Are you getting that too? You feel like you've had played more dance records? Not necessarily, no, not here.

SPEAKER_04

Interesting.

SPEAKER_02

I don't agree. No, not really. I don't agree with his point. Yeah. You know, from what standpoint? He's making it sound like it's a whole new thing. Dance music is always. Oh, yeah, correct. But I'm just trying to figure out like what is he saying?

SPEAKER_05

Like well, you're just see like the the point he was making about the country stuff with the stuff. And you're also seeing a lot of more mashups and things like that coming out there with rock and that together. So it's just becoming a lot easier to play dance music stuff because you're infusing it with the genres that are already out there. So it's like becoming priority. Yeah, exactly. So my thought was thinking about weddings, what were some of your top five you know, EDM bangers that you're getting? Sure. And not necessarily to your point of like uh the song. I don't care about the song, but like, is the edit right? Is it what edit are you playing? Why are you playing that? Sure. And I thought we'd just go back and forth. I got like five tracks, you got five tracks. Right. So um We're not gonna play the um No, I'll play a little bit. Okay. You want to put on the uh heads? So I think I'm gonna go first. Okay. And uh the song that I mean, the newest song that I'm gonna put on here for you is the song uh Where You Are by John Summit. Yeah, great song. It goes over really well for me. And the it's this is the hooks and drops only. That's all you need. You don't really need it. So you wanna hit it? I mean, it doesn't matter who you are, this is customer. It's not just the dance.

SPEAKER_04

I love this song. You're right. Good one to have in the library. I should be playing this. And again, just the hooks and drops. I did play this at the fitness event I did last week. You did? Yeah. And people responded to it? Yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

It was you know, it was a class. It wasn't a right. No, I understand. Yeah. So your first entry into this, which uh was an interesting edit that you picked, which was the clarity track. I mean, that is the EDM song that you have to have in there. It never misses. But you're playing the DeVille Deville epic intro. Yeah. Which I haven't played that version before. I've always played the hooks and drops only, but I had that in my library. Yeah. I did. Here it is. Here's with the drop.

SPEAKER_08

Because you are the page.

SPEAKER_05

So a cappella only.

SPEAKER_08

I wish I did a nude. Jason relentlessly, still fine, and I don't know why.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, I like that. Yeah. The claps in there, too. Like it's not just going into the beat. Right. Yeah. It's a good one. Always works. Always. So if you're looking for an EDM track that you know is not gonna fail, that's pretty much.

SPEAKER_04

Especially going in those last 15 minutes or whatever. Like you're just looking for the anthems, the closers. Totally. That feeling, like that that rush of like yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Also good for the cryo. Oh, yeah. That one especially. Yeah. Uh your next entry was Pursuit of Happiness, the Steve Aoki. Still love this. Quick header.

SPEAKER_01

I'm gonna do just what I want. Looking ahead, no turning back. Clean version. I'm screaming out. They screaming out, anyway.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_05

This guy's crazy. Yeah. And it's also super short. Yeah. You gotta go that route. My uh entry into this is the uh and to what the guy just talked about in the clip, the fusioning hip hop with dance. This is uh Grove Street party, but it's called Grove Street Rattle.

SPEAKER_04

Okay.

SPEAKER_05

So this is the one with um Waka Flaka. Waka Flaka and bingo players. Okay. You know, for the hip hop and stuff, I feel like someone's gonna bingo. Put the two together. This is the one I'm trying to take it. Also great for after parties.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. Again, not too heavy-heavy, yeah, but good enough. Yeah, we did an after party at the beach a couple years ago. Remember, that was the opener. Like I had to in the other room. We had a whole nother set of gear indoors because we had been outdoors all night, and that's what they wanted with. So my next version, the original.

SPEAKER_05

My next version that I'm gonna give you, it still hits hard, is the I'm good, the Babirexa. Oh, yeah, yeah. I love this song. But this is with Better Off Alone versus It's a Killer.

unknown

Damn.

SPEAKER_05

So you think you know where it's going? Yeah. Sounds like the original, or it sounds like it doesn't make better off alone. It's clean-ish. Doesn't have the clean replacement word. See, I like it like that. Better than momentum. I think that's lame, bro. Like, you don't want to play fucking that can 90% of the time. Yeah, it makes me but it's the song kind of slept on because people have forgotten about it. The I'm good. Are you playing it regularly? Oh, I'll I'll close with this. Oh, you've been playing it? Sure. Okay, I didn't know that. Okay.

SPEAKER_04

I mean, I want to play that fuck, you know, the edited, but I play freaking.

SPEAKER_05

You had uh Cash Cash, Take Me Home and No Brainer, the OG version. So here, let's see. Yeah. Doesn't need anything. Alright, I'm gonna show you something.

SPEAKER_08

I mean, I like this version. I love it. But I need this, yeah, I need this. Chop it up.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, you made your own uh no chit turn so cold. Okay, so that's good. Yeah, but sometimes if I got one of those EDM weddings, I feel like the verse brings it down too much. Okay. So this is the exact same thing. Okay. Quick hitter, okay, chorus first. Okay. Let's hear the difference. You're mixing. Kind of like that epic intro you just showed. Yeah, this is because you're right to it. I'm not trying to like slow roll them into it. I like that. So it's kind of like a different, I mean, it's exactly the same. There's no flips to it or anything, it's straight ahead, but it's just starting with the chorus first. Simulate it. So if you haven't tried it, you should definitely simulate it. All right. Your next one, or my next one here, or your next one was the titanium. Yes. That's an epic. You gotta go into it. Yeah. So go for it. You play the hooks only word. Yep.

SPEAKER_07

It's one new. I feel like this is such a good thing.

SPEAKER_05

I have it in my list anyway, but I have a different word. So this song is one that is used so much with like blends and stuff. Yeah. It's just one of those songs that kind of has that kind of like Red Start Now by Do a Leap with one of those. But I've found that if you don't play the original um, you know, titanium vocal, people will like be revolt. Revolt. So this does both. I made my own version of this based off of the Willow mashup. The Willow mashup is with Stargazing. Oh. Stargazing. Yeah. The uh Miles Smith Willow. Okay. Willow's the editor. Yeah, I got you. But it it his version only has that mashup over it. I'm like, I have to play the original. So this is showing you how you can do both together in the same edit.

SPEAKER_07

Take my heart, don't break it.

SPEAKER_05

This song's kind of now on its way out. So this keeps it kind of still. But people know it. They know this part of that song. Just the chorus over it. I'm playing Stargazing Bird. Okay.

SPEAKER_07

See?

SPEAKER_05

Takes both of them, puts it together. I never go back to Stargazing. Just the transition.

SPEAKER_04

I would have been mad if I had not heard the chorus of this song.

SPEAKER_05

Right.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

Totally. Too big. Uh okay. Uh your last entry here was the Don't You Worry, Child versus One Last Breath. This is actually the flips who made it, but then you and Steve chopped it up. Chopped it up even more. Coming out of the corner. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well done. So similarly, I hadn't seen your list before I've made mine. I did another rock one. So this is uh uh Dirty Little Secret. The All-American Rejects versus something new. This is Matt Topper's edit. Love it.

SPEAKER_04

You know I love these bands. I love these kind of bands. You know, this is my shit. This every time I play this, it goes crazy crazy. Send me this. Yellow.

SPEAKER_05

This it's it's enough, it's mellow enough that people can sting way over it. You know, it's not like they're stinging over like a method build. I let it go a little longer to depend on your build. Now we got to pull on the floor. If they're really digging it, I'll let it go to the second verse. Yeah. But sometimes I'll just get out of the end of the night, bring them together. Yeah, I love that. Tell me that. Crushes. So uh we might have a little pack for people. Can we uh on that Patreon? Can I download the pack? Yeah. Am I a member of the phone? I think you are. I think you are. I think you got the keys to the castle. Brian B here. If you like the music I share on our podcast, just know I'm holding back a bit. The real stuff lives on my personal DJ Patreon. This is where I put all of my exclusive edits, my curated lists, the exact tracks I'm pulling from every pool, Patreon, fan camp, and private email lists that I subscribe to. I'm doing all the digging so that you don't have to. Just the stuff that makes people go, yo, this DJ is different. So if you're tired of playing the same old, same old, go to patreon.com slash DJ Brian B official. And if you want a little more access, there's a VIP tier with coaching and some extra perks. That's patreon.com slash DJ Brian B official. Um let's hit the gear corner. Okay.

SPEAKER_04

The gear's here. The gear, the gear. Is here, is here, is here, is here, is here, is here, is here, is here.

SPEAKER_05

So I've been on planes a lot lately. I get targeted with this thing all the time. I'm very curious to see it. Yeah. So I hate the fact that when I'm using an external, whether I'm using it for video content that I'm moving from my 360 to it or a different one where I have my music on it. That thing's just you know, dangling it. A little dangle. Especially when you got I got food. I got like, you know, they're bringing my first class meal. You know, Bucky around here. Yeah, I got my all of it.

SPEAKER_04

Your compression socks on. Don't forget to send me that list of all the shit I need for. That's on my list. Okay.

SPEAKER_05

So this is this is it. Yeah. This little box. Yeah. But the way it looks on here.

SPEAKER_04

No, this is the one I get targeted by.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, here's it on the computer.

SPEAKER_04

Damn, that's nice. And what's cool about it.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah, what's cool about this is it comes with two magnets. I mean, this is on top of a plastic case, too, so it's not even on the actual computer, right? And you can put it on the back, and you basically it's just a magnetic. You can check it out.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05

But for video and other things, I just think it looks cleaner. You can pull it off. Yeah, that's cool. How much were these? Yeah, I was gonna ask you if you uh want to take another gander of a cheap. Um

so the cool thing is you get two of them. Oh, okay. Comes in, so that's one pack, and then I got the second one too with it. I think it was um Am I giving the two for price? The two for price is it only comes in a twofer. Two for 40? No, it's a little bit more than that. Two for 7165, $70. But I feel like it was enough of an annoyance where I had to try it. This is not Amazon, is it? It is on Amazon. Oh no, no, it's not. It's Delta Hub is the name of it. Random company. Okay. But I was targeted on it and I uh picked it up and I've so far been impressed. Yeah, yeah. I get targeted. It just keeps it clean. Yeah. And if you're you know, downloading your videos that you took over from your show and you want to put it on there while you're like working somewhere else, it's not just like dangling in the ether. Dangling in the ether, right?

SPEAKER_05

Dangle. Let's hit the uh question of the day.

SPEAKER_04

Question of the day. The question of the day comes from our boy Clife uh Estores. I submitted this a couple times before, but never heard from you guys on it. That's a good start. Uh I should have left that out. Trades, vendor discounts, or anything of the like when another vendor asks for your services or vice versa. How do you handle this? I feel like we've covered this though. I feel like we have too, but maybe not. Maybe not. It's been two. Haven't we been doing this almost two years? Probably. I think it's September. It's two years. Um didn't you just do this? Did it last night and doing it again tonight?

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um, how do I handle this? So they asked you, how did this so what was it that you just did? Last night was what's called a styled shoot. Glenn said up in up in the northeast they call it a showcase. Down here we call them styled shoots. It's the first one I've ever done. My guy Brandon had done one with this photographer in Charlotte, and she came to a venue yesterday and did it. So there was me, sax player, cake, head table fully decorated, florals, fake bride by

SPEAKER_04

herself, fake bride and groom, they were actually a real couple because he was tonguing her down. Um I'm assuming they were a real couple and not actors or models. Um I think they were I think they were a real couple. Umage? I don't know what was going on there, but um I will say that I did it for two reasons. One to get the media from it, which I'm not sure many people were shooting the DJ when they had all that stuff to shoot, but I'm definitely in some pictures. And it looks like today a bunch of people tag me, even though I'm not in it, in it. Uh, but more importantly, the venue is brand new, 11 months old. Right. We have not been playing there. Randy went to the grand opening, didn't DJ it, and I felt like I needed to A lay eyes on it and B meet the owner. Which right off the gate, I met her right out of the bat. We hit it off. She had on a Montana sweatshirt. I'm like, What what what's your connection? She was like, Oh, I was just there for a bachelorette party. I was like, So she wasn't there. I was there for a bachelorette party. Yeah, she was young, definitely under 40. Cool. And brand new venue, built from the ground up. So they don't have a referral list at the time. Five million dollar project. I if they have a referral list, I don't think we're on it. Oh. Or it's so new that they we're just not being called yet. Right. Yeah. So good to do. So how did you get they just looked you up? No, Brandon. Allie that owns my Charlotte office, was like, hey man, uh Delaney, the photographer, is doing one of these. I feel like you should do it. I got a lot of good media from it. Yeah. I'm tagged in all the posts every time. Yeah. I just so at the end of the day, man, it was let's call it uh that's promo though, right? So Yeah, let's call it uh 4 30 to 8. Yeah. I was there. On a Tuesday, right. Now, I will say, their original thing was we want you set up out here in this courtyard out back. I did not know I was gonna be outdoors. And it oh my gosh, yesterday all of a sudden I'm fully set up. Speakers indoors I'm getting ready to hit play, and they go, look over the building. Fucking storm. Yeah, oh, it was horrible. And I literally start just grabbing and luckily they helped me. But I mean, I grabbed speakers, they had the umbrellas over the top of the DJ booth. Like, I mean, I was and then I went and grabbed the cover out of the van, slapped it back on top, and just like sprinted it inside.

SPEAKER_05

Like yesterday was horrible.

SPEAKER_04

But I was fully set up, then had to come inside fully set up again. Like I was not happy, put it that way. But I kind of checked my attitude and made the best of it. Yeah. Tonight I am doing um a trade for some stuff that me and you need for the conference. So they uh this girl that owns the rental company has a bunch of rental people coming to town for a big dinner at the art museum. They need music and probably a microphone and cocktail music. And I'm just like you approached them for this. Nope. She emailed me and was like, What do you think about doing a trade for um the stuff? And she knew about your conference? She did it last year. Oh, okay. I didn't know that. Okay, sorry.

SPEAKER_05

Same girl that did the staging and the tables and all the linens, all that stuff that we need. How do you handle this when it's like an actual gig? Like I'm talking a paid-for gig, like a wedding or something like this. Are you gratising this? Are you I I am deeply, deeply discounting it.

SPEAKER_04

So for example, 50% off? Yeah, 50% usually something like that. Like I'm doing um a a big thing that the Angus Barn is doing soon, and it's a big disco party or something, big theme party, and they'll sell tickets and they'll make money on it. But I just the amount of shows and the way they take care of me there, and the and the amount of shows my guys do there. I think I it would have been five thousand dollars or something like that. It was a Saturday night, and I just said, Randy, just write it for twenty. I said, show the discount on the contract. And so write it for five thousand and then say, and she was over the moon. Right. She was like, Oh, that is so generous, you didn't have to do that. And I was like, I just feel like it's the right thing to do.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, all he wants is a chest pie.

SPEAKER_04

I I just want the chest pie at the end of the night and a nice fat ribeye. You know what I mean? That's what that's what the contract said. It didn't say 2500 instead of a piece of chest pie with some uh uh whipped cream on top. I'll break my sugar streak. Um, trades, vendor discounts, or anything of the like when another venue. I mean, I it Clive, it all is gonna depend on your relationship with them. Yeah. What you're what are you gonna get out of it? Are you gonna get media? Are you gonna get uh on the preferred vendor list? I I mean I don't have a an exact metric. Every one of them is kind of a TBD. Yeah. Am I gonna get anything out of that? I don't want to say what it is, but you may I mean before the show, Brian and I were talking about this opportunity on Monday for this golf thing, and I just don't I don't see the ROI. Right. I don't, I don't the the the people that I think are gonna be there are not gonna be there. Right. It's for youth hockey. I I have nothing to do with that. My kids never had anything to do with that. If if it's cancer, I I'm I'm probably I'm thinking a different mindset.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

You know, heart, heart, heart disease, autism, I whatever. Right. I'm probably thinking differently.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Youth hockey, I I'm not really I don't I just have no affiliation to it. You know what I mean? Like I just every one of these is on a per case basis what I'm asking. And sometimes I just say, We're we are all tapped out this year. Uh please call us next year, but call earlier. Yeah. And they may or may not.

SPEAKER_05

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

So I I don't know. What about you, man? I know do you do a lot of this stuff?

SPEAKER_05

When I was younger, yeah, I wouldn't discount. I was like, you know what? No, it's like yeah, I'm like not discounting this stuff. Look at my hair. Yeah, that's what you know how much hair product is? Oh my god. In this economy? Yeah, no doubt. I don't know why it was that way. I just was like, no, I felt like I was like devaluing myself at some point. Yeah, yeah. And I've switched my tune completely. Yeah. A 180 as I've gotten older. And met Joe Blenn. Yeah, that too, probably. Uh but no, I actually have two uh weddings that I'm doing, and they are one's for a venue that has given us so much business that it's You mean like the owner's getting married? The owner's daughter. And I so she wants to blow it out, right? So she's so I said, listen, my talent fees waived. However, I need a place to stay. Yep. Um, so if you can pick me up, need a ticket to get there. I said, but the gear, I'm gonna comp, I'm gonna comp my talent, so don't worry about any of that. Now she wants to do musicians and a bunch of other things, and I'm I'm not comping that stuff because I gotta pay these people, right?

SPEAKER_06

Right.

SPEAKER_05

However, I mean she's still getting a steal of a deal. $15,000 wedding for less than way less, yeah. Right. Yeah, probably a $30,000 wedding for like $15.

unknown

Wow.

SPEAKER_05

I we're still actually gonna do okay, you know, like with the extra musicians. We have a drummer, we I mean, we have added everything to it to make this like the oh wow wedding over the year, right? Right. But she gives us so much business, talks about us constantly on the up and up. I'm like, I have to do this for this girl. You do, and then another one, uh another venue. I saw that she was engaged and she got engaged. I immediately messaged her because we aren't getting the business right now. And I'm like, listen, we want to, I personally want to be the person DJing this wedding for you if you want to DJ. So, no, it's on me, just need you to get me there, whatever. I'll wave the towel fee. And she's doing it. Yeah, she's doing it. That's all right. And so good job. I'm that it's the reverse. Yeah, they haven't given me the business, but I want the business. Yeah, yeah. So sometimes I look at it the same way you do. It's like, what's the ROI gonna be? I mean, am I gonna do this for every person out there?

SPEAKER_04

No, absolutely not, man. But if people approach you, you have to look at it from the standpoint of what you can get out of it, whether it's something that fills your heart, right, something that builds a relationship, something that gets you or your guys more business. Right. I mean, like um, right when I get back from Australia and Tokyo, um, a day, two days later, me and Saquon driving to Hilton had to do a wedding. And we did a complete trade. Right. She's a content creator and kills it for me in that. And I so I said my normal rate to come there would be whatever, probably five or six thousand dollars. Right. Time travel and everything. And she goes, What do you think about doing five or six thousand dollars worth of content creation? So she's she or one of her girls has been out to multiple shows. Yeah, I still have credit with her for the future shows. Yeah. And she basically just sends me an invoice and it's just knocking it off her business. Yeah, I get it. So I mean, if you can do a one-to-one trade, even better. You don't have to discount anything.

SPEAKER_05

I need that content anyway. Totally. The only other thing I'd say that we haven't said is that I don't think you have to always wait for them to come to you. Like, I saw the girl was got engaged and I went. And you know, probably 15 DJs blew her up. Maybe. You know what I mean? Yeah. Or maybe they're waiting, just like, hey, if they ask, I'll do it. But like, I'm like, no, I want to take this on. And it's, you know, it's an October peak season. Yeah. But I'm like, this is worth it because, or I hope it will be because this one hasn't, you know, whatever. But she was over the moon that I even would offer. Wow. And so, like, you know, because sometimes they're embarrassed to ask. Yeah. You know what I mean? Right. But if you're volunteering it, yeah, it can go a long way. So just be aware. Be aware of it. I don't think there's a right or or you know, a form of metric.

SPEAKER_04

No, no, no. It's all per case based. Clearly, you don't want to do this for every show that's out there. You know what I mean? But but but but you know, man, you know. Like I can just see it in my head. Like I'll get pinged about something or I'll think about something, and I'll go, okay, what what is the advantage here? Where's my my leg up?

SPEAKER_05

So funny enough, when I was younger, uh before you know, I was married and all this stuff, this is I had that mindset of like I'm charging my rate regardless. And then, you know, if I have to pay for it out of the pocket too, and then you know, then my wedding came around. Oh shit. And I wanted all these people to do things, and I'm trying to like look for a deal. And I'm like, I can't even ask for one because I charge them for their wedding. Right, right, right. Yeah, yeah. So it can bite you if you're not careful. Yeah, yeah. And it did. And it was like at that moment, I was like, now I'm looking back, I'm like, I should never have done that. Why did I put it one wedding, you know, out of 30 or 40 for the year? It wouldn't have done anything, and it would have saved me a nice chunk of change. Right, you know? So, anyways, hope this helps. Shout out Clife. All right, let's close it out. Uh for those of you that are not on a CRM or are looking for one, we have them sponsoring our show, but we actually use the product. Yes, this isn't just a money grab or a sponsorship to pay the bills. This is something that we actually do use and have used since for me, 2010.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, DJEventplanner.com is the move. Yep. DJ Event Planner is my go to CRM and Brian's. Uh, we we don't just get paid to talk about it. We actually really use it. So check it out if you need a CRM to run your DJ business. We'll see you guys next week. Peace, y'all.
