Doors open is the most underrated part of a wedding reception, because it’s one of the first places where guests judge your taste, your confidence, and the vibe of the night. We get super specific about how we build doors open music that feels modern without being annoying, cheesy, or overplayed: the BPM pocket we like, when to use originals vs bootlegs, why we strip aggressive rap sections, and how to choose tracks you’ll never need again once the dance floor starts.
We also go off on customer service and support, starting with a brutal “had to go to the bank” story that turns into a reminder for every DJ business owner: remove friction for your clients. Then we talk about small businesses closing and the uncomfortable truth about DJ conferences and DJ education. If you want community, networking, and events like DJ Collective to stick around, people have to show up, not just comment “so sad” after the fact. We even add nuance on when a poorly run event should probably fade out so the ones doing it right can thrive.
On the tactical side, we run through doors open track ideas across eras, share remixers and artists we watch in the DJ pools, and hit the gear corner with Bunn Gear updates including Quad Pods 3.0, a new basic aluminum DJ booth, and the Cruiser ceremony cart. We close with a great listener question: what do you do when a client sends a playlist with exact timestamps for every song, and how do you protect the party without dismissing their effort?
Subscribe for weekly DJ business and performance talk, share this with a DJ who needs better walk-in music, and leave a review so more working DJs can find the show.

Welcome And Patreon Shoutouts
SPEAKER_05What's up, Boothheads? We are on the last episode of season eight, episode thirteen. Welcome to the Beyond the DJ Booth podcast. I'm Brian B. This is Joe Bunn next to me. So glad you guys are here. Happy Pod Batch Day. Mm-hmm. If you didn't know this, maybe you just stumble on this podcast. We batch record these things. So if we don't address something that happened in real time, sorry, but this is just the way we got to roll to make this thing happen. Make it happen for y'all. Every week. Yeah. Every Wednesday.
SPEAKER_06We hadn't missed. Haven't missed. Two years.
SPEAKER_05Two years.
SPEAKER_06Two years right around. We started in September around my birthday, two years ago. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Have not missed. Have not missed. Like I said, that's that's commitment right there, boys and girls. And uh one of the other things that you can commit to for us is being a part of the Patreon, which is where we put some bonus content, we put extra episodes, we share things from our events that maybe don't make the pod. It's just a good place to be if you want to take it to the next level. Let's put it that way. And help support the show. Yeah. This is a lot of work. A lot of work, a lot of time, a lot of money. Yeah. So, but one of the things that we return back to you is a little shout out on this podcast. Sure. You want to go with the first one? Sean.
SPEAKER_06You think it's Stefan? I do. Okay. Sean Stefan, shout out. Sean in Millbury, Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_05So you know what's crazy about this? Okay. So one of the things when you sign up for as a Patreon, you don't always have to put where you're from. Okay. I do the research. I go look these people up. Okay. It's like, Sean, this name sounds familiar to me. Didn't know why. Okay. But sound familiar. I do the Google. Okay. And sure enough, it takes me to a Facebook page. Okay. Go to it. I'm friends with this guy. Like, wait a minute. I don't know the name. I mean, I know the name, but I don't know the guy. And I look and I'm like, wait a minute. This guy was a client of mine. Like, I did his wedding. Hmm. Interesting. I can't be the same guy. Because I just have the name. I don't know. I'm like, there's no way. Does list the email address. I go, wait a minute. Why don't I go to DJEventplanner.com look him up. See if it's the same guy. Same email address. No, dude. So for how long ago? I pull up the contract. Pull up the run-of show, if you will. Okay. I brought it with me. Okay. May 3rd, 2013. Damn. Still in DJ Event Planner. Still in DJ Event Planner. Look at this run-of show. Look at these songs. I just thought it was classic, how long this thing was with formalities and whatnot. Oh my God. But I haven't talked to Sean, you personally, in probably 10 years. Minimum. He was the groom at this wedding. At this wedding. And now he's a DJ. I don't know. I think he's just supporting. No, he's not a DJ. He runs some gyms. At least the last time I talked about it.
SPEAKER_06Hold on, hold on.
SPEAKER_05This dude's not even a DJ. He's not a DJ. He's a Patreon member. Patreon member.
SPEAKER_06Supporting the show?
SPEAKER_03No, is that not crazy?
SPEAKER_06You're saying you haven't talked to this dude in 13 years, and he still remembers you. Still remembers you. He supports your podcast and your Patreon. Our podcast, but our podcast. Yeah. Dude, shout out, Sean.
SPEAKER_05That's super dope. But you had somebody like that with your guy who's known you since you were a kid, the guy who sent us the merch. He's not a DJ either.
SPEAKER_06Good point. Shout out Chris Gentry. Chris Gentry. I mean, yeah, I guess you're right, man. People, people are down to support, but I mean, that's like a homie since the eighth grade. Like this dude, you just did his wedding.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. It was funny. When I looked at this list of stuff that we did, I remember him coming. He's from the Boston area. They throw down down there. They're like, dude, we want this to be like a high-energy thing. But to be fair, you don't know that he's not a DJ.
SPEAKER_06I don't know that he's not.
SPEAKER_05No.
SPEAKER_06Turn the corner.
SPEAKER_05Turn the corner.
SPEAKER_06I'm inspired by Brian B. He goes back to Boston or Millbury. And next thing you know, he's popped off as DJ Sean Stefan. Could have been. We don't know that.
SPEAKER_05Look at that grand entrance song. Like, what was it? Scream and shout, I think.
SPEAKER_06Um the bright entrance. Oh no, the ceremony of recession. Go down to our grand entrance, scream and shout. I want to scream. What was the next day where the levels? Yeah. I'll still drop that though.
SPEAKER_05It was just funny to see like 2013 and all these songs are kind of coming back. You know what I mean? Right. And I went till 1230. If you go to the end of this, like I look at when I started and when I end, and how full of formalities and stuff were.
unknownDamn.
SPEAKER_05But this is why you gotta have DJ Event Planner. You never know when you might need to circle back.
SPEAKER_06That's awesome, dude.
SPEAKER_05Isn't that kind of cool? Yeah. So speaking of Patreon members, let's hit me hit the second one here. This was done in DJ Event Planner at the time. Interesting. Yeah, this is old school. Yeah, I will. Michael Copen. Oh, yeah. Shout out, Michael. I know him. Where is he out of?
SPEAKER_06Woodsboro, Maryland. Never been. You know where that is? Saek one?
unknownThat's way out there.
SPEAKER_02He's way out there, bro.
SPEAKER_05Well, thanks you guys for uh supporting the show. And um, if you want to be a part of the Patreon, give it a shot. What do you got to lose?
SPEAKER_06Patreon.com slash beyond the DJ Booth Podcast. Yeah, it's literally $19.99, and you can cancel anytime. I promise you, you're gonna go in there once, look around, and be like, oh hell yeah, I've been missing out.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. TJ Collective, once again, another uh Joe Bun gone, Brian B doing work on the show.
AI Panel And Recharge Circles Deadline
SPEAKER_05Oh another announcement. So we have a panel that we're gonna announce today, and this is having to do with technology. AI has changed the game, and we wanted to bring in three people that are DJs that are actually using it in totally different ways. Not, hey, I use Chat GPT to ask it a question, but like a lot of different things that are out there. So we got Eric Yeager, uh, John, how do you say his last name? Bucks? Okay. Uh good dude. No, no. Bikes. Bikes. Okay. I I've never tried to say it and I never wanted to.
SPEAKER_06He wrote it out. It's like like a bike plural, like a bikey ride, bikes. I think it's John Bikes. And then our boy Nada Costa.
SPEAKER_05Nada Costa. These three guys are doing AI and a super high level. It's gonna make for a very cool conversation. We're basically gonna have each of them share 10 minutes of their workflow. That's cool. And maybe they'll help somebody. Yeah. Hey, we're chasing. Yeah. That is a good question. Uh, second thing. We talked about recharge circles. I'm not gonna circle the wagon uh on this, but literally today is the day, last day to get your submissions in. Okay, first off, we're attending.
SPEAKER_06You have to buy a ticket. You have to buy a ticket. And then secondly, if you want to submit a question, you have now received a link. Right. And if this is something that's never been answered at a DJ conference that you've been to and you don't think we're gonna answer it after looking at the schedule, then this is your chance to put in a question. And you are gonna get it conversated upon. It's not a word, but we are going to talk about it. Converse. Converse. We're gonna converse about it if you submit it and it gets accepted by Brian, Jason, and myself. And you don't uh maybe Jason. We'll see.
SPEAKER_05Um but I'll say this too. You don't have to lead the conversation. Maybe you just want to be talking about, right?
SPEAKER_06So we'll find the people that I I don't anticipate they will lead it. You know what I mean? I think they're gonna just be a learner. Right. So check it out.
SPEAKER_05Get those in, and uh let's move into the pop culture minute.
Pop Culture Music Trends Check-In
SPEAKER_05So, dude, the song Boston, Stella Lefty. Yeah, you're into this. Blowing up.
SPEAKER_06Blowing up. You're into this. So you know that. Do you I I mean, I right up. I'm just not getting, I mean, I'm just not again, man. I feel like the South is always behind. I feel like I'm always behind. I get a lot of information from you, quite frankly, if I'm being completely uh genuine about where music comes from. I just there are only a certain number of hours in the day, and sometimes music does not have the priority that yours does.
SPEAKER_05Well, I looked her up.
SPEAKER_06I like the way you time block, and I I need to do better.
SPEAKER_05This girl, though, came out of nowhere.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Nowhere. Okay.
SPEAKER_05I never heard of her. Me neither. I'd look her up. Is it a real person? Please say it's a real person. Her dad is the founder of Groupon. But you didn't know that.
SPEAKER_06Um we're Nepo'd out. Every episode is Nepo. Like last last week, we last week we talked about Magnus Farrell, Will Farrell's son. Granted, he is talented, and maybe this girl is too, but like she's she's got it's a country music.
SPEAKER_05She's out of Chicago. So it was just kind of interesting. Not very country town. But then this clip came up.
SPEAKER_07I think I showed it to you while we were traveling a while back, but to see back to Boston, and we're jumping up and the interpolation.
SPEAKER_03Okay, sorta. Interesting.
SPEAKER_05But you know, they like this guy, Noah Khan. Ish. Well, I he's kind of whiny to me. How voice-wise. Walk me through how he got so big so fast. I don't know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_06I'm trying to figure out this thing was still left leave. I'm more trying to figure out how the fuck Noah Khan, two weeks ago, three weeks ago, had 75,000 people here in Raleigh in a stadium. Wow. Like ushering Chris Brown in a stadium, that makes sense. Yeah. Noah Khan playing an acoustic guitar to a bunch of white people doesn't. Right. Guns N' Roses, I iconic, even though they don't sound nearly as good as they did in '89. Yeah. Are iconic. That's stadium shit. Right. Noah Khan is not. I I'm I'm just so like. Yeah. I get it. I just can't imagine who who insured and and supported that tour and was like, yeah, I'm gonna get my money back on this. And and he they have sold it out. That's crazy. I I don't, I just this dude, I feel like, well, that story is more interesting than sell lefty, but go on.
SPEAKER_05She uh Mumford was at uh MSG this last weekend. Yeah. At time of recording. Yeah. They brought her up on stage. Did you see this? No.
SPEAKER_03Wow. It kind of fits them a little bit, you know.
SPEAKER_05With the horns in the background back there.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I mean, you know I love Mumford.
SPEAKER_05I mean, I it's a catchy tune. It's all the young kids are singing it. So you gotta think about that. I mean, listen, man, music. I'm just throwing it out there.
SPEAKER_06I know. It's just trying to keep you on the I know you are game. I'll I mean, I'll I'll grab some edits of it. I'll have it ready, you know, if I need it. Check it out. Okay. Check it out. All right. I just I don't know, man. Let's move on to the
Customer Service Rants And Real Talk
SPEAKER_06off the record. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Uh off the record. Let me talk about my sugar on the icy. They throw a shade while I'm sipping on this icy. Don't care if you hate over like me. You know why? Cause this is a ice me. Rick, and off the record, off the record, off the record. Say it with the chest. Got a microphone, check it. I'm gonna say what I want to say. Time to bring it right, get out the way.
SPEAKER_06We haven't done a little rant in a while. What did I go off on last time? Oh, people blowing me up off like on my socials to like help them with like customer service. Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Well, speaking of customer service, I got a rant. It's not really DJ-esque. Oh, boy. I had to go to the bank the other day.
SPEAKER_06Like in the physical bank.
SPEAKER_05Oh no. Okay, so here's the situation. Always bad. Always bad. I bank there with Bank of America because I need to be there. I have to be there because of at one point I was doing national stuff and I needed to be in a bank that had that kind of clout. Anyway, I had an issue with one of my businesses being had the EIN number of another of my businesses. I don't even know how this happened.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05I noticed it because it said, hey, we need to confirm that this EIN number and all this is right. And I'm like, no, it's not.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I can't edit it. It says you have to go into a branch to talk in there. They never have enough people in there. Ever. Where did you which one did you go to? The one off of Capital. Okay, go on. I'm thinking that that would be the better one. Uh and then on top of that, I already know where this is going. I show up, I'm like, I'm gonna get there at nine. Wow. You know, knock this out first thing in the morning. Hopefully I beat the rush. Didn't look at the hours. 10:30, bro. Get the fuck out of here. They don't open till 10:30. Till four. The bank? Till four. I'm fucking the branch. Now you can do the ATM stuff outside. No problem. Nobody in there until 10:30. I've never heard of that in my life.
unknownThe bank?
SPEAKER_05The bank. The bank? The bank. Go on. So I get in the line and it's pretty long. Wait, wait, wait. When you pull up at nine? At nine, I go back home. Okay, go on. Well, I'm not gonna sit there for 90 minutes. Okay, go on. Come back. There's already a line.
SPEAKER_02Yep. You messed it up.
SPEAKER_05I should have stayed, probably. Should have got a little coffee or did a little, little whatever. Diddling. Anyway, I finish up. Uh, and the lady it she has to call the main number in the bank. We couldn't do this offline. I had to literally stand here to be in your office so that we can make a phone call together to deal with this bank stuff. It is the worst system. And I feel like it's gotten worse. Like the banking has gotten way worse. It's horrible. You can't do that. Like, it's money. We're talking money here, man. Like, this is not something you want to mess around with. No, you know what I mean? Yeah, yeah. I'm not getting my latte here. No, right. It ain't right. Exactly. Like, I gotta talk to a person. I don't know. I'm just it's bad, dude. It's bad. It's really bad. And I just say it just because, as DJs with our own businesses, we should try to make life for the customer easy. And dragging this kind of stuff out is horrible. It's it's terrible, man. Anyway, go on. You with your rant. What do you got going on? What's the what's the latest with the Joe Bun? We've talked customer service before. I know we're off that. But what do we got? What do we got today?
SPEAKER_06Man, I I don't know. I let me let me I'm gonna retailer it from my original opinion. But uh what's pissing me off lately is non-support of small business. And I'll start it by two places locally that are closing after 30 or 40 years here in Raleigh. The first one being Cafe Carolina. I eat there once a week. Staple my uh industry staple. Two blocks from here, I go either DoorDash or go there physically. They announced their closing. Right? I think they've been open 30 30 plus years. Rent or is it something else? They moved, they had to move to a spot not even you know 100 feet away. And did some rent cookies? The place with the cookies. Yes. Gone, it's over. August 31st. So we gotta go before then. But they they make a post about it. All the all the local blogs pick it up, you know, and they post about it hundreds, maybe let's let's call it thousands of comments under it. Oh, this is a travesty, so sad. So I get in there and I go, Everybody's in here complaining and crying about it. You know, oh but when was the last time you fucking went? Right. I said, I personally either go there or door dash from there once a week.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_06When was the last time the 300 people that commented on this post went?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_06These places won't survive unless you support them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And you know what's another one that you missed.
SPEAKER_06Adventure landing.
SPEAKER_02That and the skate shop.
SPEAKER_06Skate shop 30 years. That skate shop right up there on Peace Street closed down. Yeah. Uh Adventure Landing. Yeah, I told you. My kids grew up there with me to play Pop Pop and Go Kart.
SPEAKER_05I still have cool uh credit.
SPEAKER_06Can I use it? That's a wrap. 38 years they've been open. Crazy. Gone. Which leads me to supporting DJ shows. You and I spent uh the better part of two days texting everybody that we had on our phone. So that means we have their personal phone number. So that's a personal person we know. If if if I have your phone number, I know you. Right. And then email. Email. Of every person that has ever been to a DJ Colleague. I think it was like 200 plus names. I think it was closer to three. Might have been. To say, hey, just checking in. What do you think about coming to the conference this year? In Raleigh, North Carolina in the fall. In November. Yeah. The I'm not sure about you. I don't have your phone or your emails, but the overwhelming response to me was I'll come if you pay me to speak. Now, some of those people have potentially earned that title. Or that accolade. Or that ask. I guess. How about that? The overwhelming majority have not.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_06I don't think I've ever even used that on somebody before. In fact, I feel like if I go to a show and I'm not speaking, I'm paying to go. Right. Me.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_06Joe Bunt. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I don't think I I just don't know what people are thinking.
SPEAKER_06Asking that. You you don't have the credentials, the clout. Just because you had a viral video one time doesn't make it an authority on Instagram. You've paid triple the price that we charge now to come to our conference before. How do you think it's going to keep going if you don't support it? How are you above it now? Like you're not going to learn anything, or you're not going to meet uh somebody like Brian that could possibly book you all over the country. Yeah. If nothing else, you're you're able to talk to other people that are not in your market and not competitors and air your grievances or find out how they're doing stuff or how they're hooking up their gear, like, or how they're dealing with you know Gen Z brides or whatever. Even if we don't cover it at the conference. Like, I I don't know, man. A lot of people, I'm sorry, man, that you guys are are are getting a little ahead of yourselves sometimes. And I just I I whether it's my conference, Midwest DJs Live, Pittsburgh DJ Summit, DJ's Assemble, I don't care what it is, man. Like, they're not gonna survive if you don't support them. Just like these small businesses are not gonna survive. So if you want them to keep going, support them. Yeah. And don't give that fucking excuse, man. If you can't afford um, I think we're at 900 bucks now. It used to be about $3,000. Uh the other ones are usually a third of that price. Right.
SPEAKER_02I I I just see the whole thing is you go to these places to learn how to build your business to get more money. If that's the if money is the problem, you would want to surround yourself with people to talk to other people. It's not about getting paid. They don't know you. You know, that's like that's the whole point of the conference.
SPEAKER_06I agree, man. You're just not known like that. About the long run. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's about the long run.
SPEAKER_06It's it uh whether it's education or networking, those are you those are the two things. Or some people just are literally like, man, I just want to go and hang out with my friends and have a good time. Then that we'll we'll provide that as well. But like, for that to have been the overwhelming response, I was like, man, this industry is really losing its way. Something, and I even saw somebody make a Instagram reel the other day and was like, educational content is dead because of AI. Because everybody now is an expert. All you gotta do is type in, hey, make me um five real scripts that that talk about this. Yeah. That talk about uh the pain points DJs are facing. Yeah. Yeah. Now you're an expert, Brian. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05It's it's so obvious though, too, though. It is, man. I just I bad.
SPEAKER_06Fuck, man. I don't know. This podcast is derailed. Get it back on the fucking chest. Let's do it, dude. All right, go ahead.
SPEAKER_05Music is the way we do this.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Let's get to the crepe finds. I'm sorry, people. I I don't know. I'm just upset. Like, all good. I tell you what, the people that come are gonna see how we do things differently and why we are who we are, man. Right. Always this is I'm very I will always be proud of what we've done. Yeah. And I will say it here on record. Nobody ever did when we did the big ones Atlanta, Nashville, Arizona twice. No. Nobody ever has replicated and nobody ever will. No. I'm sorry. 101.
SPEAKER_05Well, this music topic came from you. Fuck.
Doors Open Tracks That Feel Fresh
SPEAKER_05Sorry, dude. I'm I'm fired up now. So you wanted to discuss Doors Open Tracks. I did. So we're gonna go through it. It's g and anything that's discussed here may or may not appear on the bonus content. But I think what I wanted to do is play a couple of these tracks for you. Where can people find the bonus content? Just out of curiosity. The Patreon. Patreon. Okay. So that is easy to get to, just it's linked in our episodes that we drop. So I think one of the mystiques with this whole doors open thing, and I hope I haven't jaded you in this regard, is that we don't always have to play house music. I gotta tell you something.
SPEAKER_06You need to go upstairs? No. That was two episodes ago. I'll come to your conference if you pay me. Sounds good. Okay, cool. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_05So back to the door's open. I think one of the the misnomers is that it has to be house music or that you have to do a remix. And I don't think that's always the case. I think uh one of the gems for me is trying to find stuff that's in that 100 to 120 range.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I I I think for me, man, I was playing it so wrong for so long that I thought it was like I don't want to say classy, like as in like it had to be Sinatra, but you know, my first ten years it it was Sinatra. Yeah. Or that Rat Pack era stuff. Yeah, yeah. I mean I did it too. And then, you know, ten years later it was maybe a transfer to the temptations or something. Like even even present day, uh up until I really kind of heard you play it and saw like the reactions, yeah. I was playing it way too safe.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Well, I'm gonna give you some songs that you probably should have in your library. Uh and again, a lot of these are just pulled from like current day needs based off of like um where people are in their marriage cycle. So in other words, 2014, you know, that kind of time period. So I want to give you a couple of those tracks to start. So this is the song Blank Marquee with the singer Yuna. Okay. Now originally it features J or G Easy. Is that right? Yeah. Okay. Now, the problem with that playing it during Doors Open. He fell off though. But the rap is always uh too aggressive, I feel like. Yeah. So I always edit it out unless it was so necessary that you had to add it in it. Okay. I think it's a dope vibe. And this is 113 beats per minute. Okay. Blank marquee is the name of the song. Just funky. You don't have to know the track. No. I agree with that. But this is like sexy. Listen to her voice.
SPEAKER_08Now I see the end. You got caught just trying to be so much.
SPEAKER_05And you can go a lot of different directions with it. Walk under your table? Yeah. Aperol spritz. Spritz.
SPEAKER_06I love it. Oh god.
SPEAKER_05Great track, right?
SPEAKER_06I don't know the song at all, but I don't need to. Right. Like if I walk in, I've been out of some cocktail hours, sweat my dick off. I walk in, and you know, you're standing there behind your booth. Yeah. And you're playing this. I'm gonna be like, oh, okay.
SPEAKER_05This guy looks fresh. Yeah. This guy fucks.
SPEAKER_06This next one. I feel like that term really never took off. I guess it's a little. Maybe that should be the DJ. I need to work on the merches. Yeah, we do. It's on my list for us to talk about Thursday. Oh, yeah. The front? What about the front? This guy fucks.
SPEAKER_05And I misspoke on this, man. It was 2021 when that song came out. So still good track. I would still at some point. Geezy is on that room. Yeah. Interesting. Okay. It doesn't need yeah. Similar kind of track. This is Doja Cat.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_05Kiss Me More. Okay. I took the rap out. No scissor in there. 112 came out 2021.
unknownWhere's all you?
SPEAKER_05Is it Snedit though? No, just a shortened version. It's different though. Oh, it might be a redrama. Okay, yeah. You don't know who made it. Maybe chartbusters sounds like it. It's good. Well, like even those that track before, they're in the similar uh BPM range. You know what I'm saying?
SPEAKER_06I think you got it backwards though. I think Doja Cat is the one that's the bum again. You think it's a scissor? Yeah. Right?
SPEAKER_08That's scissor, right?
SPEAKER_06That's scissor, right? Okay, so she's in there. Sorry. It's just whatever. I know what you're saying. I know the rap part. It's annoying. It's annoying.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it is. And for a doors open, I feel like this is a little bit more melodic.
SPEAKER_06The last thing you want to do during Doors Open is annoy people. Right. Or or or play an overplayed song. Or play something you're going to play during dance.
SPEAKER_05Right. Those songs I would never play during dance. That's right. Get these out of the way. That's right. And again, you wouldn't play 30 of these because then you're going to alienate the other older folks. But you're moving through it pretty quick. Yeah. Here's another one that's like that.
SPEAKER_06This is uh Yeah, because it's something like something, something, that ass and titties. Yeah, right. I don't need to hear ass. I don't need ass and titties on doors open.
SPEAKER_05No. So the OG of this is 95 beats per minute. This is 112. This is the Q remix of A Thousand Years Vanessa Carlton. Wow.
SPEAKER_07If I could fall in so the sky.
SPEAKER_05I'm not playing this much during dancing. Every now and then I haven't in a while. But they're singing along to it because this is one they would know.
SPEAKER_06What's the tempo? Uh 112. Great. Good pickup. Excellent.
SPEAKER_05Could be in the Patreon. Could be. Could be. Number four here. This is a Simo bootleg. I played this at the one that you went to. You're on the Simo kick lately. I've been, I've been, I've always been on the Simo kick. That's a good point. 120. You ever met Simo? Not in person. No. Simo's cool. Yeah, I could tell he would be.
SPEAKER_06He lives, I he lives wherever Fuse lives. Cincinnati or somewhere near there? Yeah. Ohio. Yeah. Because he went out to dinner with us one night. That's awesome. Yeah, he's a good dude. This is just the way you are.
SPEAKER_05Bruno Mars, one that hasn't been bastardized to death where people aren't saying that needs to be off the list. I like this version of it. I literally opened doors open with this when you were there. Yeah, you did. You sure did. I was like, oh, I get it. The horns. Yeah, you did.
SPEAKER_07Oh, her eyes, her eyes, what the stars look like when I shined.
SPEAKER_00Her hair, her hair fell perfectly without a climbing. It's just so beautiful.
SPEAKER_06It totally like changes the mood. It changed my mood that day because I was like, fuck Ryan B and this load in. And then when you started playing, I'm like, ah, okay, here we go. You know, I finally hear some music. Oh yeah, the drop out walk-in.
SPEAKER_05Excellent choice. Uh, one from that 2013 era. This is Budapest. Better than Ezra. No, George Ezra. George Ezra. Did I put better than Ezra in here? Oh man, I must have been.
SPEAKER_06I love Better Than Ezra, but this ain't it. George Ezra. George Ezra.
SPEAKER_05Sorry. But this is a cover. That's funny. This is Rolepso. Rolepso. This is uh the original is 128. This is actually slower. This is 120. Okay. But brides that were getting married today, yeah, 10 years ago. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Great song. I've always loved this song. I had to.
SPEAKER_05Better than Ezra. I can't believe I said that. I think you love Better N.
SPEAKER_00All of this will go away.
SPEAKER_06Just wearing me out. Alright.
unknownSorry.
SPEAKER_05Now, sometimes, like I said, they don't always have to be new songs. I find myself playing a lot of indie stuff when people are walking in. So this is a group called Saint Motel. Yeah, I know them. Track came out in 2014. Just the original. My type. Oh, I know the song. Yeah. 118. Great doors open.
SPEAKER_06I never would have thought of that for this. I never would have thought of this song for this moment.
SPEAKER_05If they're into like Mumford and all that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Or like Midnight City. Yeah. MGMT.
SPEAKER_05Yes. But I love it because it's 114. It's a hard one to find.
unknownAnd take a look.
SPEAKER_06This is the album version. Yeah. Yeah. I love how it's talking about. Fanfare.
SPEAKER_05But so far, I haven't shown you anything that's been like a blend, really. Maybe that Bruno Mars one is. I don't know if it is or not. But but for the most part, these are all originals, like that have just been chopped up. Meaning like taken out the rap, shortened, whatever. Or or or redrummed. Redrummed. Right, right. Yeah. So now I'm going to give you the first blend of it. Gotcha. Okay. A song that I don't think you're playing anymore. Hey, look, Ma, I made it. No. Panic at the Disco. I love them. But the other song that's crushing for me on dance floors, that if I I'm not going to use it for that necessarily, would be Bleeding Love, Leon and Lewis. Right. Both of these came out. Uh Leon and Lewis came out 2007. This uh Panic at the Disco came out 2018. So you're covering a lot of ground in decades there, and they work so well together. This is at 108. This is a scooter blend, by the way. Scoot, scoot. Shout out scooter. I'm telling you, when they're walking to the seats, singing along to this.
SPEAKER_01I love it. Right?
SPEAKER_05What you hit a chorus, they'll play the as a minute. Do you ever go to look mom made it? And that works good deal, doesn't it? Yeah. Hanger. I'm trying to give you range from like 100 beats per minute to you know 128, whatever.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that changed the whole vibe of that song. Right? Yeah. The song is kind of depressing. It is. Totally, yeah. Yeah, that changed the whole vibe. Total.
SPEAKER_05Shout out Ryan Tedder, though, that wrote it. Right. So one I don't really like to mess with. I know you don't either, but this one works well. This is Valerie. Amy Winehouse. Let me see. This is the even Steve blend with the song Strangers by Roosevelt. Again, you're taking a song from 2007, Valerie, with something that came out in 2020. It's a fresh take. If you're not going to use Valerie in the dance set or dinner, good place to put it. Doesn't bastardize it too bad. What a groove though, right? You're walking in. It's fire. I wanted to hate it. I wanted to hate it. I know. I play it more than I like to care to miss. You would never play the backing track ever. Roosevelt? I mean, great, great artist, but you're not playing the I like it.
SPEAKER_06Banger. Tapping my feet. Saquon's even tapping his. He means he likes it.
SPEAKER_05Alright, we're gonna pick it back because I played a lot of current stuff. Now you got the old league people in your age range, 150, 50 years old. 50 years old. Song has been popping off though. Uh Young Hearts Run Free. Candy Staten. You know that track? Uh disco track.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05So this is the Dario Carmenita remix. Hey, I've got several edits from Dario Carmenita. Came out 1975. 119. Great track to use. Again, this would be like my opener track, maybe. It's really big on TikTok right now, this specific track. Really? Oh yeah. I've never really fit it into a dance set, but this is where I would use another song well.
SPEAKER_01What a bulk time today!
SPEAKER_05One hit wonder. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_06It's a great song. You're right. It never really song, even I mean, when I was playing back then.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna take you back a little further. Okay. 1968. Okay, go on. Time of the season. Wow. The zombies, you playing this? No. I always hated this song. You gotta get an edit? Well, I usually there's a guy who did it on I think the voice at one point. Okay. I didn't use that version, but this is the this is the zombies versus the neon rad. I think it's called Redrum. Cool version. Again, if I see an older crowd of the season.
SPEAKER_06117 beats per minute. I like it with the drums punched up a little bit. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05I don't think a lot of DJs are playing though. I just think it's one of those overlooked tracks that a lot of DJs are playing. Yeah, you gotta remix that in there. I think it needs that. Alright, we'll stay again this uh go back up to the 75, 1975. Got a classic rock, little one of these nights eagles. This is the LNTG remix. This is my short edit of this. The song, this actual version is like five to seven minutes long. So I cut it down to about two and a half. But I like how it comes in with that. Little bongos, percussion. That's the only part that's kind of produced differently. Yeah. Cocktail hour. Even walk-in. I've used that there. Underrated track. Not many people playing the Eagles these days, but a good one. Uh, a remix of the BGs featuring SG Lewis, 1977, more than a woman. Oh, I love this song. 104. Yeah. Easy to mix in and out of. I love it. Last one. ABC Jackson 5. Okay. Disco Dom just redid it. I think you just came out. Great version. The original is 94 beats per minute. This is 121. Oh. Here you go. I might slow it down, Smidge. Walk in.
SPEAKER_06Because I usually don't play this in the dance setting. I don't either. I usually play I want you back.
SPEAKER_07Easy as one, two, three. I'll say but I'm so ready. A B C for walking?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Right? Yeah, I love it.
SPEAKER_06Anyway, hopefully this helps refresh. Dude, it helps me tremendously. I hope it helps the listeners. I got a callback.
Which Conferences Deserve Support
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06On something I said earlier.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06It's been bothering me. I I've never done this before. Okay. I was like, oh, the shows aren't gonna make it if you don't go. But then I I I I don't want to act like I'm um contradicting myself or a hypocrite because I do genuinely believe that there are some shows that should go away. That they're they're they're doing it so poorly, they don't give a fuck about it. And they are doing it for the wrong reason. And I can tell you the reason you should be doing it is not to make money, because there is not uh any money to be made, not to speak up for the amount of time and effort me and you put into this thing. And Jason. Where's Jason? Where is Jason? Anyway, uh so I just kinda wanna I I I don't want to be people be like, well, do we go or don't go? You support the people that that are doing it and doing it the right way. How about that? For the right. And I'm not I'm not gonna name names, but I think um as with most things, whether it's DJs or businesses or restaurants, the c the cream eventually rises to the dock.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. Anyway. To put a bow on this music, I'll cut and paste that somewhere else in the episode. What you just said.
SPEAKER_06So I mean, whatever you want to say. Sure.
SPEAKER_05Wherever you want it to go.
Remixers And Bands To Watch
SPEAKER_05So uh if you are looking for doors open music, one of the things that I tend to look at is these Patreon. Yeah. There. That's where I look. But also remixers when you're out in the pools, the ones that I like to look at are the software. So these remixers, yeah, if you're in the pools, these are the ones I look for for doors open stuff a lot. So it's actual names. Actual names. Oh, here we go. Trying to help you out. Uh-huh. De Sofer. Yeah. Ken Walker. Okay. Les Buses, B-I-S-O-U-S. If you ever see that, it's probably good. Yes. Okay. Gigamesh. Always Blonde ish. Yeah. Marshall Simon. I don't know. Purple Disco Machine. Always fire. Dennis Blaze lately. Yep. Another one. And then I always look to for these doors open artists. MGMT we talked about. The 1975. Love them. The Temper Trap. Love them. The Killers. Love them. Maggie Rogers. Ben Richter. Sarah Barrell. I think that's how you say it. Those are just artists. I'm never gonna play with them during dancing. Yeah. But they can work for dancing. I got you. I see what you're saying. Just giving you some thoughts. Good stuff. Let's hit the gear corner.
Bun Gear Prototypes And Release Plans
SPEAKER_06The gear's here. The gear. Is here.
SPEAKER_04Is here is here. Is here is here. Is here is here.
SPEAKER_06What do you got cooking? Man, I'm cooking up so much stuff for Bun Gear and new booth styles? Because that's just booths, right? I need more SKUs, right? We can't So we've been around there for six, seven years. We basically have sold two main products the Bun Gear Command Center, and now the 2.0 version, and then the quad pods, the tube light stands. Oh sorry.
SPEAKER_05I thought it was all booths. That's the confusion for me. I never knew this.
SPEAKER_06So it's always the booths and then any accessories for the booths. So laptop stands. Right. You know, the quad pods for you. The quad pods. I mean, it's still an aluminum product. Right. It still goes with you know DJ gear that that is uh not an essential part, but if you have tube lighting, I would say the quad pods are essentials. What's the products? Speaking of in fact, you saw 'em when you walked in this morning. So the prototypes are all here, which means these are very close to being done. Because new booths. Well, we got three things that are up front. Number one, speaking of quad fies, the 3.0 version. So the 1.0 version was good. 2.0 version, what we tried to do was make them in black and white because people wanted that. But in order to do that, they couldn't telescope anymore because the telescoping part is so tight inside the sleeve that when you raise it up, it shaves the paint off. So it couldn't be couldn't do that. So the 2.0 version, you had to screw them together. People didn't love that. We had some manufacturing issues with some of them, but they did have an adapter on top that allowed you, if you changed out your tubes, you just changed the top out. You didn't have to order new stands. 1.0 version didn't have that. People were ordering adapters off Amazon that didn't work very well. The 3.0 finally solves every problem. It's got the adapters, it's got the telescoping, and it's got the same leveling feet base. This is for lights. Tube lights. Tube lights specifically. So the ones that look like the LED tubes. This is the best tube stand that has ever been made. V3.
SPEAKER_053.0. 3.0, sorry.
SPEAKER_06Yes, sir. A new booth. New booth? You want to talk about it? Yep. We have a basic booth coming that looks more like a three-sided facade with shelves, but made out of aluminum, not that shitty scrim stuff that you see. Don't have a price on that. Don't have a price on the quad pods yet either. Drop dates for these? Fall. Oh, it's coming around. Absolutely. So we're in this will be September when this drops. Once I've seen them and given notes to the manufacturing facility, then we're off to the races. And the last one is Wait, wait, go back.
SPEAKER_05You said you don't have pricing for a basic I don't have a pricing on anything yet.
SPEAKER_06Okay. And then the final item that I'm willing to speak about today is the cruiser, which is basically that little ceremony cart that I've been using. So it's basically a slant top mixer rack with oversized wheels on it, all terrain rig. So you can put a mixer on top. It's got a shelf on top if you don't want to mount a mixer on top with a lip on it. So if you just want to put your iPad up there, all bun gear. All bun gear. Bungear.com. Bungear.com.
SPEAKER_05Makes for good holiday gifts. It's going to be a great third third uh quarter. It's awesome. Are you debuting any of these at any show? Will they if they come to the DJ Collective, will they see this?
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yeah. We'll put them out there. I think you should. Absolutely. I mean, it's local. Yeah. It's not like you're having to ship this stuff. Absolutely. Yeah, you can see it if you come to the DJ Collective. How about that? There you go. Otherwise, nah. You're making videos, I'm sure, though.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I'm I'm I'm the I'm the Facebook ad king. You know that. Me and Saquon just shot a whole new badge the other day.
SPEAKER_03Nice. Question of the day.
Handling Client Timestamp Song Lists
SPEAKER_03Casey Rush. Shout out Casey. Can we read it? Is he coming to the collective?
SPEAKER_05He using it. He is, and he's bringing a guy or two. Yeah. I am all for requests and playing what the client wants. However, I've never gotten anything like this. Wondering what Brian and Joe would do if they received a list like this. Sorry, you couldn't see it. With specific timestamps for each song. And if you I actually took a picture. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah. If you're watching the video, every song has a timestamp. Um I actually did go through a couple of these tracks just to see like, what are you doing here? Yeah. They're all like choruses. Yeah. You know, like the head part of the song. So I mean, I'll just take it off the top. And then you add it. Go ahead, man. If I got something like this, I'd be like, what DJs have you, or what parties have you been to that is causing you this much stress? Because clearly it's somebody who's been playing six minutes of a song. I mean, these aren't even the problem with some of these, I forgot which one I was listening to. Oh, I think it was forever. One minute to 134 down there. And then 34 seconds. You're not even getting through a chorus. It's like a half a chorus. Stop. I'm not kidding. So I told uh if it were me, I would it's it and I listened to Low too. That one's only 30 seconds, too. Like low 30 seconds? That's too fast. Like, I get what you're trying to do. You want let me just see if I can understand the overall goal. The goal here is you want short songs not to play three minutes long. Got you. This will actually piss people off. Because there's certain songs that you can't cut that short. Right. Like we just got into it. And now you're you're causing a bigger problem for your party in most cases. Because all of a sudden, and and like we're gonna burn through a ton of songs this way, unfortunately. You know, so like I'm trying to figure out what's the goal? Are you just want to make sure we don't play long songs, or do you have such a long list that you're trying to get through stuff? Maybe I can blend a few together, come up with ways that are creative to make this in there. But I'm not sitting here going and I feel bad because this person's gone through the the exercise of going through every one of these songs and putting this work to put timestamps. Yeah. Like I've like, hopefully, you're having the discussion before it gets to this phase with the client that goes, listen, this is how I work, this is how we we collaborate, it's a collaborative process. We work on this together. This is so much work that someone's put in, and I don't want to dismiss it, but you're gonna hurt your party.
SPEAKER_02Like they should just DJ it if they couldn't. Right. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_05And that was my other question. Was like, I hope it's not in this order. I hope this was just kind of a random list put together because it's not doesn't flow well either. How would you handle it if somebody gets it?
SPEAKER_06Is there another page of this?
SPEAKER_05There was. I didn't put it on. I mean, it was like two pages long, bro.
SPEAKER_06Um, I mean, I like the assuming this is like a week or two before the wedding at this point.
SPEAKER_05I'm guessing. Yeah. I mean, like this that's crazy amount of work that someone just spent.
SPEAKER_06I I would, I would absolutely say, you know, I I get what you're trying to do. Um, especially me, I could say, look, I I came, I'm not, you know, I came from a club background. I came from a frat party background. I know how to play fast and get through your songs and hit the parts that everybody wants without making people mad. Like this is, I know you like you said, I know you spend a lot of time on this. I promise I'll play all these songs, but just let me hit them as I see fit. For me to try and hit these numbers that you've set is unrealistic. Like Space Jam is 112 to 141. That's 29 seconds. Right. I mean, that that like just let me play, you know, and and quick mix through your songs, and I promise you you're gonna be happy at the end of the night. Right. And I and I just and if they were adamant about this, I mean, I guess I would do it, but it was I mean, how would you do it?
SPEAKER_05You make cue points. I'm I'm not editing every track for 30 seconds. I can't imagine. Can you imagine how much time that would take? And then number two, so much.
SPEAKER_06These time points are never gonna line up with whatever version you have to like go to the original. No, you're gonna have to get on Apple, yes, download the original song.
SPEAKER_05That's the only reason why you picked I picked forever and whatever the uh because I had those album versions for whatever reason. Right. But you're right, they're not gonna line up with the DJs. They're on Spotify. She's on Spotify, yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's mean the DJ's gonna be playing all OG track.
SPEAKER_05She's on Spotify right there. It's funny that though she's got no hands. That one's going all the way through.
SPEAKER_06The whole through because nobody wants to cut those verses.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06This is funny. I'm sorry, Casey. Salt Shaker too.
SPEAKER_05Casey that would be the one that I would cut a little lower. Salt Shaker? I'm not playing the three minutes of that channel.
SPEAKER_06I've never played the whole version. Casey, please uh circle back with us and let us know how this went and so we can um talk about it on the podcast again. Thank you. And we'll see you at the collective.
Sponsor Thanks And Wrap-Up
SPEAKER_05We already plugged the DJ Event Planner, but I'll say it again. Clearly, a great CRM for you to use. If you're not checking any of those out at the moment, you should check them out.
SPEAKER_06DJEventplanner.com. Thank you for sponsoring the show, and we appreciate you guys for listening and watching.
SPEAKER_03We'll see y'all back on the next one. One to go.
